Nintendo Revolution HD - High Definition
Nintendo Revolution looks to be going HD bound. Nintendo is in talks with Toshiba to add an HD-DVD player to the Revolution. To my knowledge it is more of a strategy talk right now. Nothing more than talk right now. Nintendo is entertaining the idea that since it looks like Sony´s PS3 will not be launching until 2007.
The marketing strategy is very simple. If Nintendo incorporates a HD-DVD player into the Revolution will that move more consoles since it will be the only High Definition video player out?
Nintendo´s Revolution will be out in less than 6 Months. This is a last minute addition to the hardware. Nintendo is looking at the fact if people will be more inclined to buy the console based on it being a huge additional feature.
Furthermore if the PS3 is not truly coming out until 2007 then that would also mean that next Christmas season the Nintendo Revolution will be the only console/entertainment equipment supporting HD-DVD on a large scale. The problem is that this will increase the cost of the console by $100.00. Now Nintendo´s original goal was a console for $149.00 Base. $249.00 for a premium.
Nintendo is in talks with Toshiba to see if they can get the costs down even further. Rumor has it that Nintendo may be able to get the costs down to only an extra $50.00 per console. The reason being is that Microsoft did not include an HD-DVD with their system.
Toshiba is desperate to get an edge on Sony´s Blu-Ray technology. This may be the hole in one that Nintendo could use. Add this to the list of a kick-ass controller and a new Revolutionary feature and you got the ultimate system.
