Nintendo Wii Tops PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 in January (Update1)

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co.´s Wii outsold Sony Corp.´s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.´s Xbox 360 during January as consumers bought 436,000 of the video-game consoles.

Microsoft Corp.´s Xbox 360 was the second-most purchased machine with sales of 294,000, followed by PlayStation 3 with 244,000, Credit Suisse analyst Heath Terry said today in a report, citing NPD Group Inc. data.

Wii is outselling PlayStation 3 by almost 2-to-1, the report said. Consumers have been attracted to Wii´s price, at half the cost of the least-expensive PlayStation 3, and a wireless controller that can be swung like a bat or tennis racquet during play.

Both Wii and PlayStation 3 were introduced in November as competitors to the Xbox 360, which was released in 2005. Wii´s $250 price tag compares to $499 and $599 for the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 sells for $299 and $399.

Wii sales fell from 604,000 units in December, the smallest drop of the three consoles, Terry wrote. The Xbox 360 had the biggest decline, dropping from 1.13 million units while PlayStation 3 sales declined from 491,000.

PlayStation 3 includes a Blu-ray DVD player that allows users to watch movies in a high-definition format, in addition to playing games. Production snags with the player created supply problems during the holiday shopping season, forcing Sony to concede market share to Wii.

Nintendo Wii sold 436,000 units in January according to NPD, with Xbox 360 selling 294,000 units and PlayStation 3 hitting 244,000.
The numbers were released to various news outlets by Microsoft, and have not been officially verified by NPD. Microsoft says it is targeting cumulative sales of 12 million by the end of June, suggesting average numbers of around 200K a month.

Perrin Kaplan (pictured), vice president of marketing for Nintendo said, “I do think that we´re selling to additional and different customers," compared with the Microsoft and Sony consoles. We´ve had an incredibly healthy start and we think there´s going to be a pretty long tail on this product."

A Microsoft spokesperson said the company had enjoyed “a fantastic January," with Xbox 360 boosted by Lost Planet. Sales of Xbox 360 are up 18% compared with the same month a year ago. The company will be happy that Xbox 360 beat PS3, with few shortages of either machine. On the other hand, the cheaper Wii did suffer shortages in January, but still managed to trounce the competition.

For Sony, third place will be a disappointment, but the company’s bigger play must come later in the year, if and when the Blu-ray factor kicks in.

Si à cela on rajoute le fait qu´il se vend par semaine 80 à 90000 wii au japon, contre 17 à 20000 PS3 et 4000 xb360, on, peut se dire que la petite dernière de Nintendo est bien partie...

Au japon, tu trouves d´occasion des PS3 a 127 euros, soit mons cher qu´une Wii neuve.

Les Japonais n´achêtent pas la PS3 parce qu´elle est chere mais parce qu´ils ne l´aiment pas et qu´elle ne leur apporte rien de plus.

Superbe argumentation, là vraiment y´a rien à ajouter. Franchement les critiques ou tentatives de rabaisser la wii face à son succés deviennent de plus en plus pitoyable...m´enfin c´est du cossec72, rien d´étonnant.

En plus des premiers chiffres officiels de la part du National Purchase Diary, c´est l´institut Bloomberg qui lève le voile cette semaine sur les ventes hardware pour le mois de janvier 2007 au pays de l´Oncle Sam. Bien ancrée au Japon dans une place de leader incontesté sur le marché des consoles nouvelle génération, la Wii s´impose également en Amérique du Nord en cumulant 436.000 machines écoulées au cours des dernières semaines. Grande gagnante de la période des fêtes avec ses 1.100.000 d´exemplaires, la Xbox 360 connaît quant à elle une chute significative en atteignant difficilement la barre des 300.000 consoles vendues (ndlr: 294.000). Un chiffre cependant légèrement supérieur aux 244.000 unités d´une PlayStation 3 toujours à la traîne et qui tentera de se relancer avec une sortie européenne prévue dans les prochains jours.

ca doit être la proximité de la sortie de god of war 2 aux usa qui a relancé la ps2. par contre la ds ce mois ci... pourtant y´a bien quelques jeux sur ds aux usa ce mois ci, non?

euh... c´est vraiment utile de mettre les ventes de wiisport? non parce qu´encore il serait vendu sans la console je dis pas, mais là ca coule de source son score, c´est inutile de le mettre, surtout pour le voir tout le temps dans les charts sans être réellement dispo en magasin, n´empêche 250 euros wiisport, c´est pas donné (oui je blague, pas la peine de gueuler lol)

Rupture de stocks de DS après le carton de fin d´année, tout simplement.
