Xbox 360 Hearts Europe
Microsoft tells the financial press Europe, not Japan, is the company´s new focus.
by Ryan Geddes

September 21, 2007 - Despite its recent all-out assault on the Japanese market, Microsoft may be cutting its losses in the world´s second-largest gaming economy and heading west to focus on Europe instead, according to a report today from Bloomberg News.

In an interview with Bloomberg at the Tokyo Game Show this week, Microsoft Xbox group product manager Aaron Greenberg told the financial news outlet that Redmond is increasingly setting its sights on the euro rather than the yen.

``The No. 1 objective is to win on a global basis and that may mean winning some markets and losing others,´´ Greenberg told Bloomberg. ``Europe is our priority focus right now.´´

Citing research from Japanese market analyst Enterbrain Inc., the article states that Microsoft has sold 446,201 Xbox 360s since 2005, accounting for just 8.7 percent of new consoles in Japan, as of Sept. 9. More than 3.49 million Wii and 1.17 million PlayStation 3 consoles were sold in Japan since their launch in late 2006.

The European game software market was worth $7.8 billion in 2006 out of a global market of about $24.7 billion, compared to Japan´s $5.9 billion market, Enterbrain data show.

Greenberg´s comments come on the heels of some big Japan-related announcements from Microsoft recently, namely the company´s new and improved relationships with a gaggle of renowned Japanese developers, including Square Enix and tri-Ace (Infinite Undiscovery,), Mistwalker (Lost Odyssey) and Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden 2). Microsoft is also planning to bump the number of Xbox 360 titles available in Japan from 170 to 250 in an effort to show off the console´s depth to Japanese gamers.

In the meantime, said gamers are still gobbling up portable titles. The juggernaut that is Pokemon Diamond/Pearl earned the TGS sales award this year for having sold 4.9 million copies in Japan between this spring and last, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII helped bump the PSP into first place over the Nintendo DS last week.
