Simply put, there´s no next-gen racing game as cool as this.
Although different demos of the game have been doing the rounds via download onto owners´ systems, and at demo kiosks at stores in Japan and America, some of the feedback has been mixed and it´s abundantly clear to us that the near-final product we´ve played benefits from a lot of perfecting.

It´s a game that comes together so effectively, you have to say ´wow´. It´s possibly even better looking that the infamous, stunning target video trailer shown 18 months ago and it plays even better than it looks.

Crashes are as diverse as the tiniest differences in their causes; they´re not pre-animated but properly calculated based on the weight, momentum, density and strength of everything involved.

There´s no question: all the neat touches they had in the questionable E3 2005 target trailer are pretty much present and respectable in some for or another in the real, final game. It´s unbelievable and an absolute told-you-so victory for PS3, with some of the lushest, best-lit visuals we have seen to date. And it´s the only such told-you-so on the PS3 right now.

In-game, you´re not going to get 60fps, but for the first time, when we talk about motion blur we´re not talking about compensation.
No matter how close passing objects or scenery are, motion blur is flawless in its execution - much, much better than we witnessed in something like Project Gotham 3, where the motion-blur compensation for framerate looked shaky. Whether that was a software or hardware performance issue, with MotorStorm - and we never thought we´d say it this - high quality, film-like motion blur at 30fps almost seems better than bleeding edge 60fps without it. We´re going to hell for saying that - but this effect just looks lovely.

The slowdown issue is very mild compared to the TGS demo, dictated by the level of physics and on-screen intensity at any one time;
But given the progress of what we´ve played since the September build, this is not going to be an issue when the game is on shelves.

The HDR lighting in MotorStorm is also sexy;
OK, so many new-generation games are pulling off HDR admirably, but there´s something about it in MotorStorm that looks pornographically attractive.

Perhaps it´s the harmony of it all and how convincing all the effects are in together. Bumped-mapped surfaces and water look really nice, flags wave and metal reflects, terrain deforms, mud splashes everywhere (including on your TV screen), and the dusty particle effects all look fantastic.

There are a few minor graphical shortcuts, though. When you´re not moving the camera around during pause or a crash, it automatically pans around the car, which reveals some pretty obvious Doom-style 2D rotating objects such as bushes and fire.
Elsewhere, from bonnet view if you move the camera to look at the mirror, it only reflects small amount of the world, and not detail such as other vehicles. These things you will only notice if you study the game closely, and certainly not during gameplay, but it´s always a dark pleasure to find that a game has small imperfections you can feel smug about spotting.

Motion sensing control is quite accurate but it´s obviously a hasty afterthought.

If there´s one game that really shows off the POTENTIAL of the PS3 beyond 360 right NOW, this is it.
MotorStorm is the PS3´s first killer app.
