These are real, living breathing people, and consequently Konami’s fantastic use of the PS2 hardware helps flesh out their idiosyncrasies very convincingly. An example is the fact that Silent Hill 3 doesn’t require the use of pre-rendered cinematics for close-contact cutscenes anymore - Its own in-game engine simply does a better job

Another positive is the amazing visuals on display, definitely an example of the pinnacle of VFX, and at some points approaching the polygonal complexity of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which is no mean feat considering the hardware used to produce said movie; also, all the cutscenes are rendered ingame, instead of being separate CGI sequences.

One of the very first things that you’ll discover about Silent Hill 3 is that it has some of the most amazing graphics ever created for a home console. SH3 easily throws itself in the front-runner position in the category of "Best Graphics on the PlayStation2", but you might be surprised to learn that it puts itself as a front-runner for "Best Graphics on Any System". Indeed, Silent Hill 3’s graphics are to die for.

What exactly makes SH3’s graphics so good? As with any solid structure, you’ll need a strong foundation with which to build upon. The character design, animation, and overall quality is most likely the foundation for which the graphics are built upon. You’ll notice that they are unbelievably detailed at all times, and have wonderful animations, even the enemies never quite look identical, nor will they all do the same things.Perhaps they’re not randomly-generated, but it certainly counts in the long run. You’ll notice highly intricate details within all of the characters in the game, even those that are onscreen for a limited time. For instance, Heather’s facial expression and complexion can change on the fly at any given moment. The little details are what make the character designs in SH3 such a solid foundation.

Graphics – While I’m all for peace, love and harmony between the major consoles, the next time an X-Box fanboy tells you that all PS2 graphics suck, you can hang screens of Silent Hill 3 next to their hospital bed. All the characters are stunningly rendered, and as the game’s script calls upon them to show more emotion then in most games of this sort, the graphics engine is more than capable of showing them in that state (note Heather towards the end of the game.) What’s even more stunning is the fact that some of the most impressive moments of the game don’t utilize the team’s now-legendary CGI effects (that’s only a few points in the game.) The in-game graphics are simply a feat, using no cheap tricks like pre-rendering backgrounds or anything of that sort. As a result, the game feels totally organic with its often-moving camera angles, grotesque, often phallic creatures and backgrounds that feel as if they could be real. The lip synching is also quite good, as are the animations – you can almost see the struggle on Heather’s face as she attempts to lift the maul over her head, and it’s plenty satisfying when she finally does, bringing it down with a dull thunk upon whatever monster is in front of you. Everything is realistic enough to help players sympathize with Heather’s plight, but when the game is scary, it’s terrifying – and the graphics do plenty to help that

Graphics 10/10 – The graphics are perfect, it is almost impossible to find any fault with them. One glance at opening movie, one may think that the graphics have become worse as compared to the superb CG movie of SH2, BUT the truth is that the opening movie uses in-game graphics, not CG. It is totally amazing to come up with in-game graphics that can rival the CG movies of most of the games out there in the market. With the use of in-game graphics throughout the game, the flow of the game feels smoother and frankly speaking, with such beautiful and realistic in-game graphics, CG movies may seem redundant and out of place.

The characters are highly detailed and brilliantly animated. Their hair, skin textures and facial features are saturated with details like freckles, unshaven face, thus reflecting their personalities. The emotions of the characters are clearly being conveyed by the expressions on their faces, so no dramatic waving of hands a la Resident Evil. Even their tiny gestures and subtle facial expressions are shown which makes the characters even more realistic. It is really hard to imagine that these characters are made up of polygons since their movements and animations are so filled with life.

The background graphics are equally outstanding, from the walls to the corners, every inch of the background are filled with realistic details, like the grim, the dirt, the rust, the decay, the litters, sites of accidents and the blood. The blood in this game is not just red ink splashed generously over the graphics, it looks viscous, and has varying degree of clotting and sometimes, it becomes alive and flows around in the backgrounds. In fact, sometimes, the environments will come alive to welcome the arrival of Heather.

Conclusion: A must have for fans of survival horror genre. For those who are new to the series and love scary games, this game is well worth a try. However, this game is not suitable for the weak hearted and those who are easily offended by occult stuff

Graphics - 10/10

Let me tell you how astounded I was when I first played this game. I hadn´t played my PS2 for a couple of months, and when I did, I played this game, arguably the newest PS2 hit title to be released, and I honestly thought I was playing a real movie, ala, I thought the gameplay was an actual FMV from previous Silent Hill´s! I didn´t realise it wasn´t an FMV until my character paused and didn´t move until I started controlling her!

Another feature Konami has worked on to improve this time around is the grain filter. Unlike in Silent Hill 2, where you had to finish the game at least once to have the grain filter turned on/off, you have the option now in SH3 to turn it off the first time you play, a definite plus for those that prefer the grain filter turned on/off. The opening piece of FMV is gorgeously stunning, all other cut scenes are implemented with the in-game engine. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring in SH3, especially with the shadows of the featured monsters depicted through out the game, moving ever so realistically in relation to Heather´s movement and the lighting effects coming from her torch. It is rather ironic how adjectives such as beautiful, stunning, amazing etc have been associated with the graphics in Silent Hill 3, when really the graphics are of a disturbing, hideous and repulsive manner. Still, it is this, that creates the tension and fear factor in Silent Hill 3.

Facial features have been the biggest and most noticeable improvement for the PS2 thus far. Whereas in previous blockbuster games such on the PS2 such as FFX, DMC, RE:CVX, the mouth movements in characters did not correspond to the voice actors, i.e. a usually slight delay, in SH3, this has been amended, with the characters´ speech looking very realistic and believable in the dialogues. Overall, a definite improvement over Silent Hill 2.

Graphics

Not only is SH3 the best looking Ps2 game so far, its the best looking survival horror game FULL STOP!.Yes!, that includes the Resident Evil remake on the gamecube(which uses pre-rendered backgrounds vs SH3´s 3d backgrounds). For anybody who ever doubted the power of the Ps2 go and play this game and you will see why.The only piece of fmv in the game is the intro movie, everything else uses the games engine and it looks so good its hard to believe, even i thought at first that the cut scenes were fmv but it really is the Ps2 that is making this magic. The game boasts the most life like graphics ever seen in a video game.Rather then use motion capture for the facial movements Konami have done everything manually and the results are stunning.Where as with other games, characters seem to look robotic when they talk in SH3 they look very life like. The attention to detail is amazing, you can actually make out shadows in the creases of each characters cloths, you can even see the dirt in between some characters teeth (vincent) and the lighting effects put games like Splinter Cell to shame.
It doesnt get much better then this on the Ps2.10/10
