People are always saying how Sony is in trouble and how Sony is losing money, market share and the what not. As (partially) true as those things are, it has become apparent to me that Sony may have some things up its sleeve.
Okay, at first, the PS3 was roughly $835.00 at cost and retailed for $600.00. Soon after, they were able to lower costs on Blu-Ray disc drive components. What that amount actually is, is a mystery. Additionally, prior to the PAL launch, Sony took out the Emotion Engine, saving them another $27.00 on every PS3. And just recently, Sony announced yet ANOTHER cut in Blu-Ray costs.
This is what I am getting at:
The PS3, nowadays, might cost around $700.00 or so. No one really knows, but this is just an estimate. The PS3 is $810.89 (when converted from Euros to USD) and $902.04 (when converted from Pounds to USD). If the PS3 is manufactered at a cost, somewhere in the $700.00 range, then Sony is ACTUALLY turning a profit in Europe.*
