PS Meeting 2005: Sony Enters Havok Agreement
High-profile physics engine to become part of PS3 software development kits.
by Jeremy Dunham
July 21, 2005 - In an announcement made at the annual PlayStation Meeting 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan revealed that it has formed a strategic licensing agreement with Havok that´s effective starting yesterday. The new collaboration gives SCEI sublicensing rights of physics and animation engines for the PlayStation 3 in addition to all related content and debugging tools developed by Havok itself. This means that optimized libraries of the Havok physics and animation engines, linkers, and debuggers will all be included within the PS3 SDK. Frontline support will be provided by SCEI directly.
Because of Havok´s engine, development teams will be able to use what is arguably the industry´s most realistic physics system for any game that wants it directly out of the box. For the unfamiliar, the Havok system incorporates elements of real-world physics such as gravity, collision, friction, and similar dynamic forces so that they can be reproduced and blended with physically-based character animations in real-time.
" It is our pleasure to have a strategic licensing agreement with Havok," said Masa
Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment. " With its cutting edge technology, Havok´s physics engine is highly supported by numbers of content creators around the world. By including Havok´s technology in the PS3 Software Development Kit,every developer will be able to utilize physics engine to create next generation content with real and natural effects"
" We are excited and proud to partner with SCEI to provide our physics and animation technology with the PS3 development kit," said David O´Meara, CEO of Havok. " Havok´s technology has been used by major developers all over the world in more than a hundred games. Our agreement with SCEI opens the door for all PS3 developers to use Havok to create spectacular game worlds with incredibly realistic special effects and interactive game characters."

PS Meeting 2005: Sony Hooks Up with AGEIA
SCEI continues PS3 physics push with additional SDK includes.
by Jeremy Dunham
July 21, 2005 - As one of several new agreements announced by Sony Computer Entertainment at its annual PlayStation Meeting 2005, SCEI revealed that it has entered a strategic alliance with AGEIA Technologies -- a California-based physics tool and hardware developer that´s effective retroactively beginning July 20, 2005. Through the agreement, Sony has obtained the sublicensing rights for the AGEIA PhysX SDK ( aka NovadeX) for use in its own PlayStation 3 SDK ( software development kit). PhysX is a highly-respected development solution that allows for easy in-game physics and is used quite often in engines such as Unreal 3.0 ( which was also announced as one of Sony´s new strategic sublicenses).
Apparently, the reason Sony wanted to incorporate the PhysX SDK into its own toolset is because of the kit´s multi-threading capabilities ( which make it ideal for the multi-tasking beast that is the Cell processor). The licensing agreement gives Sony and AGEIA the opportunity to optimize PhysX for PS3 use, while frontline support will be provided by SCEI directly.
" A licensing agreement with AGEIA is a strategic move for us" said Masa Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. " With AGEIA PhysX SDK provided as part of Software Development Kit for PS3, we believe that numbers of content with entirely new forms of physics expressions optimizing the power of the Cell processor will be developed."
" This agreement between SCEI and AGEIA marks a significant landmark in the development of advanced physics-enabled games," said Manju Hegde, founder and CEO of AGEIA Technologies, Inc. " The capabilities of the AGEIA PhysX SDK combined with the power of the Cell architecture will give developers the tools necessary to introduce dynamic physical properties within games that will leapfrog game interactivity as we know it today."
j´en avais déja parler il y´a 1 mois mais personne n´en a pris compte à part...(mince je me rappelle plus de son nom " Sodebo chef!")
okay c nul redevenons serieux

PS Meeting 2005: SCEI Secures Epic for SDK
Development kits to boast Unreal Engine 3.0 Evaluation.
by Jeremy Dunham
July 21, 2005 - As part of this year´s PlayStation Meeting 2005 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed that is has entered a strategic licensing agreement with the Unreal gurus at Epic Games. According to the new partnership, SCEI will obtain sublicensing rights to Epic´s Unreal Engine 3.0 framework -- the hottest software construction kit of the moment -- for the PlayStation 3 next-generation hardware.
As for the engine itself, it will include programmable shader tools, built-in physics, and a GUI-based attribution tool. Additional tools, such as scenario and movie scene development and animation and particle animation tools will be packed-in as well. In its official statement regarding the agreement, Sony states that it considers the programmable shaders the most significant aspect of the entire engine... allowing creators to reproduce photo-realistic images without going through a complicated calculation process. When used in conjunction with the other tools available in the kit, the Unreal 3.0 engine will allow developers to create all sorts of content with general programmers without the added need for specialists.
" We´re very happy to have a strategic licensing agreement with Epic Games," said
Masa Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. " The power of Unreal Engine 3 demonstrated at E3 was so highly received. By providing the outstanding content development technology of Unreal Engine 3 for PS3 developer community, we believe that many high-quality content maximizing the power of PS3 will become available."
" We´re very excited to be able to work closely with SCEI to provide our complete
end-to-end solution to PS3 developers," said Tim Sweeney, CEO, Epic Games. " Now, every PS3 developer will be able to try out Unreal Engine 3 and be productive on their very first day of PS3 development."
The inclusion of the Unreal 3.0 engine is no doubt a huge announcement for Sony and a huge benefit for would-be developers who may be on the fence about purchasing the technology. In what´s essentially a " try before you buy" type setup, the advantages for everyone involved are potentially pretty great. We´ll keep you updated with any future developments.
