New Tales Game on the way.
Kousuke Fujishima heading up character work on mystery title.
by Anoop Gantayat
US, December 22, 2007 - Bandai Namco had a busy booth at this year´s Jump Festa event over in Japan. Attendees of the annual comic/videogame show were able to get first hands-on time with Tales of Symphonia: Ratatoskr no Kishi (Wii) and Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit (PS3, Xbox 360), causing some major waits, but there were no lines for the big news story to come from the booth: a new Tales game!
Announced at the end of a Tales of Innocence stage event, the new game is titled Tales of Vesperia. The game appears to use cell shaded visuals and will feature character designs from Kousuke Fujishima and animation from Production I.G.
A platform for the game was not announced, but with a release set for 2008, we don´t imagine having to wait too long for details.

Hands On: Phantasy Star Portable
We sample Sega´s on-the-go Phantasy Star.
by Anoop Gantayat
US, December 22, 2007 - Phantasy Star Portable may have just been announced a few weeks back, but judging by what we saw today at the Jump Festa event in Tokyo, the game is quite far along in development. Sega put the game on playable display at the show, and we were sure to get in some play time before the typically long Phantasy Star lines developed.
Sega had the game set up for four player wireless co-op play in a classic Phantasy Star Online-style field environment. Each player was given a Level 25 character loaded up with a variety of weapons, including swords and sword/gun combos.
The field level was split into three large sections, loaded with enemies and gates to unlock. After clearing each section, we ended up at a confrontation with a giant red dragon boss.
The series´ control scheme maps well onto the PSP. The analogue thumb pad is used to move your character around, with the d-pad for rotating the camera. Square performs your standard attack, or you can press triangle to perform your Photon Arts move. Pressing X brings up the weapon select chain for quick weapon changes. To toggle between sword and shooting mode when the appropriate weapon is selected, you press R. L is used to lock your character into strafing mode and center the camera. If you want a view of the surroundings, you can press select to enter a first person viewing mode.
Sega´s booth at Jump Festa
Visually, PSP is looking like a solid port of the Phantasy Star Universe engine. The game runs smoothly, with just a bit of pop-up visible in the distance. It looks close-enough to its console counterparts that PSU veterans shouldn´t have too many complaints in this area.
With a Japanese release planned for Spring, PSP looks like it could offer Japanese game players something to do once they tire of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. As evidenced by the millions of copies sold by that franchise on the platform, party-based combat games are one of the few genres PSP owners actually buy en masse here, so Sega has the potential for a hit if they load the game up with content.

Hands On: Tales of Symphonia
The Wii sequel to every GameCube owners favorite RPG.
by Anoop Gantayat
US, December 22, 2007 - Thirty minutes into the start of the Jump Festa event on Saturday over at the Makuhari Messe just outside Tokyo, lines for the new Tales of Symphonia game reached ninety-minutes, and never looked back. Waiting that long to play a game for a few minutes is usually a drag, but we didn´t have too many qualms about getting an early first chance at the sequel to one of the GameCube´s biggest RPGs.
Bandai Namco had Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatoskr, as the game is titled over in Japan, set up for play in eight kiosks, using a demo that was specially prepared for the Jump Festa event. Following a brief chat amongst main characters Emil and Malta, we were asked to explore a dungeon and arrive at a boss within five minutes. Five minutes may seem short for a demo, but the counter thankfully stopped when entering battle.
Tales of Symphonia gets 90 minute waits at Jump
While the dungeon crawling component of the game didn´t seem all that different from past Tales games, get into battle and you´ll find some dramatic changes. This latest update to the Linear Motion Battle system keeps your character attacking on a single 2D line in a full 3D battle field. You lock yourself into a single enemy, pressing the minus button to toggle targets, then simply press A to make your character attack, or B plus a direction on the analogue stick to perform a special attack. You have the option of free movement over the battle field, although this usually isn´t necessary.
Outside of a super attack move, activated with the Z button when you´ve adequately built up a super move gauge, the biggest addition to the battle system appears to be the ability to make monsters join your party. You´re occasionally asked if you´d like to woo a beast that you´ve just defeated onto your side. Beasts who have made the conversion can be added to your battle party and used just like any other character during combat. In our play session, we managed to convert four beasts over to the good side; any more, and you´re forced to clear out an older monster from your stable.
Wii´s biggest RPG for 2008?
This Symphonia follow-up makes only minimal use of waggle, allowing you to shake the Wiimote and nunchuck in various ways to achieve special attacks, something that´s probably better left to button presses. Instead of tapping the Wiimote, Bandai Namco has apparently decided to tap the Wii´s added graphical abilities, as Knight of Ratatoskr looks quite a ways better than its predecessor.
The first Symphonia game was a huge hit amongst RPG-starved GameCube owners, and we expect no less from Knight of Ratatoskr amongst RPG-starved Wii owners. The game hits Japan in Spring, with an international release hopefully not too far out from there.

Hands On: Final Fantasy IV The After
A new sequel in the Final Fantasy world.
by Anoop Gantayat
US, December 22, 2007 - With Final Fantasy X-2, the Final Fantasy series ventured into previously uncharted territory of direct sequels. The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series took this idea to the extreme, completing the FFVII experience through a number of prequels and sequels.
Sequelitis is hitting the franchise again, this time with Final Fantasy IV. Coinciding with the Japanese release of the DS remake of the Super Famicom classic, Square Enix announced earlier this week that Final Fantasy IV: The After is coming exclusively to mobile platforms in Japan.
The After is meant to give gamers who pick up the DS version of FFIV a chance to see what happens to the characters after the events of that game. The game´s development staff, headed up by Tokita Takashi, have chosen for their new hero Ceodore, the son of FFIV hero and heroine Cecil and Rosa. Players will get to see the after events of the FFIV story through Ceodore´s eyes, and visit a number of old characters, including Cid, Kain, Rydia, Edge, and Yang.
We got to try out the game briefly at the Jump Festa comic/game convention at the Makhari Messe just outside Tokyo on Saturday. Playable on the latest 905i phone sets (the final will be compatible with 903i and up, as well as EZweb Win Brew sets), the demo started off with Ceodore in a castle with his parents. Monsters attack, and Cecil and Ceodore team up to do some expelling.
While the DS remake updates FFIV´s 2D visuals to full 3D, The After offers a classic old-school Final Fantasy look, with 2D sprites and backgrounds. It looks like an SNES game, although the scrolling has that unfortunate choppiness that´s characteristic of mobile titles.
The real technical marvel, though, is the sound. The quality of the classic Final Fantasy tunes is high, and we presume the aural experience will be even better once Square Enix adds sound effects (the demo was, as you can guess, a bit on the early side). This is definitely one mobile title that you´ll want to play with headphones.
Gameplay has been updated to use the series´ well-known ATB (Active Time Battle) system. As always, the ATB system keeps enemies inputting their attacks as you input your own commands, adding a bit of realtime flare to the menu-based battles. Aside from this, though, the battle system feels like classic Final Fantasy, with a side view of the action.
More notable than the gameplay changes, though, is the distribution model Square Enix is using for the game. FFIV The After will be distributed as a series of short adventures rather than as a single giant RPG. Best of all, the first download, a prologue section, will be free!
With the DS version of FFIV already a success, it seems like a no-brainer that hundreds of thousands of gamers will want to see what happens next to the characters. The free prologue download is a given, but we wouldn´t be surprised to see a good portion of FFIV players downloading subsequent chapters in The After series once paid downloads begin early next year.

avis d´ign sur ff4 the after
"un rpg level5 ca n´a pas besoin d´être paufiné, c´est parfait à la base."
OMG, I just fell into another dimension!

Lost Odyssey Gets Downloadable Content
Free items hit the Marketplace.
by Anoop Gantayat
US, December 21, 2007 - Mistwalker´s love of free bonus content has apparently carried over to Lost Odyssey from Blue Dragon. Today, Microsoft announced that the studio´s second major console RPG, now available in Japan, will get some free downloadable content early next year.
On January 10, the Marketplace will take delivery of the Bonus Item Two Pack. As the name suggests, this downloadable update contains two bonus items that will add to the Lost Odyssey experience. One is required for unlocking a story in the "Thousand Years of Dreams" series. Another item can be equipped to give your characters better guard capabilities.
Although the download is free, Gold members will get priority service on the 10th. Silver members will be able to make the download one week later on the 17th.
Lost Odyssey will see international release in early 2008, presumably with all the download content in tow (and hopefully just as free).
Un nouveau Tales of ![]()
Kenshinzen
Kenshinzen
c´est le "OMG" qui me chagrine.
une "affirmation universelle" prononcée par quelqu´un est toujour son avis
Dev_In
on est dans le deuxième et dernier jour de la jump festa.
