Summary:
This is a huge week in sales for Japan. Smash Brothers sold roughly 1,000,000 units in its debut week, but two other titles debuted with sales of over 100,000 – including Devil May Cry 4 which hit 205,000 for PS3. The Smash Brothers debut is the largest opening week in Japan in at least nine months. Adjusted for their console bases, Smash Brothers reached about 20% of Wii owners in week one, while Devil May Cry 4 reached about 11% of all PS3s owners (and a comparable number of Xbox 360 owners) in week one. Riding on Devil May Cry 4’s coat tails, four other PS3 titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week – quite the feat considering that no PS3 title had appeared in the preliminary data since early December.
Key Points:
- Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 all sold far more hardware and software than last week because of two key releases – Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii), and Devil May Cry 4 (PS3 and Xbox 360).
- Sony platforms had more titles in the preliminary data than the Nintendo platforms did.
- Smash Brothers outsold Super Mario Galaxy lifetime sales in Japan in one week
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, from this point forward, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. Sales for this report are for the week ending February 3, 2008.
Software by Platform Breakdown:
Wii Software – The only Wii title in the preliminary data this week was Super Smash Brothers Brawl – which sold about 940,000 in its debut. Wii Fit, which sold 90,000 units last week, did not appear, suggesting it is sold out at this retailer. Given the volume of Smash Brothers sales, it likely sold at least as many units as it did last week. Wii Sports, Super Mario Galaxy, and Wii Play were not in the preliminary data either – however they probably sold around 30,000, 15,000 and 20,000 units – at least – for the week, despite not showing up in the preliminary data. Expect Wii hardware to sell somewhere between 140,000 and 200,000 units this week – on the strength of Super Smash Brothers Brawl – unless Nintendo has completely run out of supply.
Preliminary Top Twenty Wii Software Sales Low End High End
Super Smash Brothers Brawl 939,000 845,000 1,033,000
PS3 Software – Devil May Cry 4 lead the way for PS3 software this week, selling over 200,000 units. Two new western titles, Assassin’s Creed and Need for Speed: Pro Street also had modestly successful debuts for the PS3 this week – hitting over 30,000 and over 15,000 units respectively. The other big title though was Desgaea 3 – which sold about 70,000 units across both available skus. Expect PS3 hardware to see a significant boost this week – to 45,000 to 65,000 units – from the solid sales of new releases.
Preliminary Top Twenty PS3 Software Sales Low End High End
Devil May Cry 4 205,000 184,000 226,000
Desgaea 3 35,000 31,000 39,000
Desgaea 3 (limited edition) 34,000 31,000 37,000
Assassin's Creed 32,000 29,000 35,000
Need for Speed Pro Street 17,000 15,000 19,000
Xbox 360 Software – The first Xbox 360 title to debut in the preliminary data in months, Devil May Cry 4 – sold 40,000 to 50,000 units this week. While paling in comparison to PS3 DMC4 sales, or Smash Brothers sales that does suggest up to about 1 in 12 Xbox 360 owners in Japan bought the title. Expect Xbox 360 hardware sales to see a boost to 5,000 to 9,000 units this week.
Preliminary Top Twenty Xbox 360 Software Sales Low End High End
Devil May Cry 4 45,000 40,000 50,000
PS2 Software – PS2 had the third software title this week to debut to sales of over 100,000 units this week – a Tales game. It also had five titles (some of which are limited editions) sell in the five digit range this week. Still, the PS2 continues to see its software sales decline as more recently released platforms such as DS, PSP, PS3 and Wii complete their take over. PS2 hardware sales should see an increase this week – to 13,000 to 17,000 units this week – in line with the general rise for most platforms this week.
Preliminary Top Twenty PS2 Software Sales Low End High End
Tales of Destiny - Director's Cut - Limited Edition 116,000 104,000 128,000
Liang Palace Haruhi Door (limited edition) 67,000 60,000 74,000

Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outou-Sai (Dx Edition) 12,000 10,000 14,000
PSP Software – Three PSP titles were in the preliminary data this week. The three titles each sold between 15,000 and 20,000 units – with Winning Eleven and Monster Hunter Portable 2 leading the way. Despite high hardware sales, PSP software sales have returned to the fairly low levels found before the launch of the revised PSP hardware. Expect PSP hardware sales to dip slightly to 60,000 to 66,000 units this week.
Preliminary Top Twenty PSP Software Sales Low End High End
Winning Eleven: Ubiquitous Evolution 2008 20,000 18,000 22,000
Monster Hunter Portable 2 18,000 16,000 20,000
Yggdra Union 16,000 14,000 18,000
DS Software – DS software continues to be in a bit of a lull in the wake of a huge holiday. The platform had four titles in preliminary data – however all were in the five digit range for sales. In fact, in recent weeks, DS software has been behaving like a normal platform, rather than the dominating force of 2005-2007. With Dragon Quest IX set to release later this year, DS has at least some amazing software sales left, but its best days for sales in Japan appear to be behind it (which is to be expected after reaching 1/6 people in Japan in three years). Expect DS hardware sales to remain in the 68,000 to 80,000 unit range for the week.
