Braveheart is an American movie, realized and interpreted by Mel Gibson in 1995. It tells about William Wallace's life, the hero and symbol of the Scottish independence, who at the end of the XIIIth century, faced, in the head of the united Scottish clans, the troops of king Édouard Ier of England who dared to invade the Scotland. At the beginning of the film, Édouard the first of England, occupies a very large part of the South of the Scotland. His oppression drives to the death the father and the brother of the little William. Wallace has been brought up abroad by his uncle, but at the same time Scots continue to live under the cruel laws of Edward the first. Wallace returns in his village with the intention to live as farmer and to avoid getting involved in the disorders which shake his country. There, he retrieve his old friend and his love of childhood, Murron MacClannough, to whom he shows the thistle, carefully protected, which she had given him when they were children. Both young people get married in secret to avoid the decree of the noctis primae that expressed the king. Later, when an English soldier ill-treats Murron and tries to violate her, Wallace tried to save her. He helps her to ride William's horse so that she can escape while he retains the soldiers. But she is finally captured and the sheriff cuts her the throat in public. In reprisals, Wallace and the villagers kills every soldier in the English garrison and Wallace cuts the throat of the sheriff in the exactly same place where this one has killed Murron, and with the same knife. So begin the quest of Wallace for the independence of the Scotland.

The film is lasting 2 hours and 55 minutes, and there are famous actors in, as Mel Gibson, at the realisation, but also in the main rôle of William Wallace, or Sophie Marceaux in the rôle of the English Princess. The scenario of Braveheart is mainly bases on the The Actes and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace , an epic poem of Blind Harry, author of the XVth century. Gibson had to face a lot of financial problems : Icon Productions, the production company of Mel Gibson, has difficulty in finding investors, even highlighting Mel Gibson as headlining the film. Warner Bros were ready to contribute funds to the project if Mel Gibson agreed to sign for a new episode of Lethal Weapon, which the actor refuses. Paramount Pictures has agreed to distribute the film in the United States and Canada provided that 20th Century Fox is doing as partners for the international rights . The project is taking so long Braveheart Mel Gibson that, in parallel, Luc Besson finally abandoned the idea of giving the main role of Fifth Element, despite the agreement of the player to shoot in this film . Meanwhile, Mel Gibson had appealed to Terry Gilliam to direct Braveheart, but Terry latter declined the proposal and decided to make himself

During the shooting, the team passes six weeks in the Scotland while the main scenes of battle were shoted in Ireland, with the cooperation of members of the reserve of the Irish army.. To underestimate the costs, Mel Gibson uses the same figurants to play the soldiers of both camps. The number of extras rises until 1 600 for certain scenes. Mel Gibson afterward eased the scenes of battle to avoid that the movie is classified NC-17 by the MPAA . The sequences of inside were filmed in studios Ardmore and numerous scenes were turned( in John's King Castle to Limerick, who was already used for scenes of Beyond the glory of Samuel Fuller.

On March 25, 1996, Braveheart won five Oscars out of ten nominations. Other awards won by the film, the most important are three BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe.
