At the beginning of the film, Édouard the first of England, occupies a very large part of the South of the Scotland. His oppression drives to the death the father and the brother of the little William. Wallace has been brought up abroad by his uncle, but at the same time Scots continue to live under the cruel laws of Edward the first. Wallace returns in his village with the intention to live as farmer and to avoid getting involved in the disorders which shake his country. There, he retrieve his old friend and his love of childhood, Murron MacClannough, to whom he shows the thistle, carefully protected, which she had given him when they were children. Both young people get married in secret to avoid the decree of the noctis primae which king expressed. Later, when an English soldier ill-treats Murron and tries to violate her, Wallace tried to help her. He helps her to ride William's horse so that she can escape while he retains the soldiers. But she is finally captured and the sheriff cuts (her) the throat in public. In reprisals, Wallace and the villagers kills evrry soldier un the English garrison and Wallace cuts the throat of the sheriff in the exactly same place where this one has killed Murron, and with the same knife. So begin the quest of Wallace for the independence of the Scotland.
