Oh my gosh? What is it? What can it be? Is it a rumour? All I can say is Sony, Nintendo, INSIDE!
Warning: This is a possible rumour, possible true story. Awaiting more confirmatino, but it´s definately worth a read, whether true or not.
Earlier this morning, Nintendo and Sony executives announced that they together had found a legal agreement regarding the rights to the name "Playstation".
Back in ´ye old days, Nintendo and Sony had been working on a joint venture system, that used Sony´s CD rom player for the SNES as an add-on, and was actually a joint venture between both companies.
Now, Sony has agreed to pay Nintendo 10% of all past and future proceeds made from using the name "Playstation". Nintendo, being the nice folks they are, are not forcing them to pay it all back now, but in installments over the next 20 years. The total? 2.3 Billion US dollars.
Nintendo, being the wise folks they are, have put this money to good use. They are immediately financing a new game studio called "The Artists Group". This studio consists of Sega, Nintendo, Namco, Capcom, Konami, Tecmo, Square-Enix, and even more are planned to join. The company will release games for all Nintendo systems, and of course, copyright properties will be exchanged.
Some of the first upcoming projects announced are:
- a new RPG using different gaming icons as the main character
- a new Smash Brothers game, featuring mascots from each of the companies such as Pacman, Megaman, Sonic, Mario and more
- a new Sega-AM2 developed racing game featuring multiple icons from the various companies
- Viewtiful Joe from Capcom, has been announced as the final collaboration
Like they don´t have enough original content, Nintendo is now promising a lot more future collaborations between studios, but right now, quality content content showing off the new studios "bond" is the goal.
However, to dispell rumours put out by various website, Nintendo has not bought any software developers and all of the members of the Artists Group will be allowed to create games for other systems also, not being limited to Nintendo. As a note, the Artists Group will only make games for Nintendo systems.
In my opinion, incredibly smart move. I was thinking of a huge online plan or something. But how did they manage to get Sony to keep it´s mouth shut for so long, as this must´ve happened months ago, or else could Nintendo know aboutu an upcoming "Megaton" announcemnt?
My take on these games?
- That RPG sounds like Kingdom Hearts, take out Disney, throw in 10X the amount of character variety, all from different places, and we have a heck of "Mario RPG", that just isn´t all about Mario. Realtime? Turnbased? Hmmm...
- Sonic in Smash Bros.? Solid Snake in Smash Bros.? Sounds like it´s going to be one of "the" best fighting games ever as we know it.
- That Sega-AM2 racer? Mario Kart possibly? Loads of wicked characters, possibly one of the best racing games ever made, if Sega and Nintendo do it right. Realistic or a "kart" sim? Who knows...

We´ve had a few people complain that this isn´t true. http://www.consoletalk.com says first reported on this story, and even though other sites may not have posted, we´ll stay tuned and see if anythnig comes in later today. As of now, it is a rumour, until another site confirms it.
