Ed Fries Talks Cube

Microsoft´s man in charge of games speaks on Nintendo´s next-generation console.

April 5, 2001

In recent Tokyo Game Show related interviews with the Japanese press, Microsoft´s "man in charge of games" directly commented on the competition.
Fries stated that he believes the PS2 is currently the Xbox´s greatest competition, simply because it already has an installed base and is, in fact, next-generation market leader. On the GameCube side, he noted that the console is much easier to program for than Sony´s, but not as simplified as Xbox because its hardware is not as familiar to developers.

"Because Nintendo does not request third-party developers, the number of developers [GameCube has] is limited," Fries said, insinuating that GameCube could suffer the same fate as Nintendo 64 -- a lack of outside software support.

More as it becomes available.
