PSP versus DS

Sony´s PSP vs Nintendo´s DS

Sony has released the Playstation Portable last weekend. Many companies have tried it before, what Sony is attempting now: To break the monopoly of Nintendo on the handheld market. I did my researched on this one and found out if the PSP is a competitor to the Nintendo DS. I compared the devices in several topics: Game-experience, Gameplay, Other Features, Battery and Games. My resources: the sites of Nintendo and Sony.

    • *Game Experience****

Graphics and sound makes the game experience of a device, both for console and handheld.
For the record, game experience mustn’t be confused with game play. These two are totally different i.m.h.o.
Sony equipped the PSP with a 4,3” ( 480x272) 16:9 TFT LCD widescreen which can show us 16 millions different colours. Two GPU’s ( graphics processor) are put inside to do the graphics manipulation. The graphical possibilities of the PS are much more than the Nintendo DS. This little machine is capable to show us 260.000 colours in a 256 width by 192 height screen ( aka 3”). In the sound section the next point is again scored by the PSP. The PSP is featured with a Dolby 7.1 multi-channel audio, with 3D sound. In still contrast is the virtual surround sound of the DS.

So concerning to the game experience PSP hand out the first punch : 1-0.

    • *Gameplay****

Gameplay consist in controls and multi play possibilities. Multi play is also ranged in this section, because MP gets more and more important and some games are MP only.
The controls of the PSP are standard: a stick, a couple of buttons and two triggers. The only new thing PSP introduce is the support for USB2 devices. This makes a theoretical a unlimited series of extra controls ( external controllers but also camera’s, guns , you name it ) possible.
The Nintendo DS got comparable sticks and buttons, but also two extra control methods. First is the extra touch screen. These bring new game play possibilities to the handheld world. The microphone is the second one. With the microphone it is possible to give “talk” to games, which is also a new game play possibility. The winner in this part is Nintendo DS, because of the touch screen and microphone game play possibilities. Ok, the usb2 support of the PSP can be in the future succeeding the controls of the Nintendo DS. But hey, we live now days and not in the future.
Both devices support the Wifi wireless network standard and offer the possibility to play against 15 other players ( total 16) against each other. Multi-play with the Nintendo DS do not require a game cartridge in every DS. More handhelds can play with a single card ridge. I couldn’t find out what the PSP strategy is here. I assume it needs a game in every PSP.

In my opinion Nintendo DS wins both game play parts and win this section. The score is 1-1

    • *Other Features****

Now day’s a handheld need to offer more than only gameplay. Both handhelds offer many and different possibilities. I will light out the interesting ones.
The PSP supports a fileformat on there for there media ( cd-rom) which can contain 2 hours of DVD quality movies ( or music). So besides gaming this device can be used to watch a movie or listening to music. Sony wants to do the same with the PSP as they did with the walkman. ( conquer the world).
Against the “DVD” possibility Nintendo DS sets a chat program. With the touch screen pictures can be send in a chat like way to other DS members.
I’m impressed by the DVD feature of the PSP and give a point to the PSP : Score 1-2

    • *Battery****

Handhelds gaming is all about gaming on “power less” locations. I mean by that, locations where there is no power supply available. So battery lifetime is important. Nothing is more frustrating than a power outage when you almost defeated the end boss.
Two aspects have to be closely looked at: Lifetime en recharged time. The life time of the Nintendo DS battery is 8 to 10 hours with a recharged time of 4 hours.
The battery of the PSP is one big misery, compared to the DS. The theoretical lifetime is a louse 6 hours. But user experience makes it much much worst. The 6 hours is with a dimmed screen, no sound and no network connection. The PSP battery is the worst battery in Handheld history, so a penalty here.

The DS scored the penalty: 2-2

    • *Games****

At the moment, less than 10 games are available for the PSP. This nothing compared to the Nintendo DS. At the release of this bastard, there were more than 40 titles available and, because of the backwards compatibility, also the complete assortment game boy advanced titles can be played.

I think this is a huge advantage of the DS and the score the wining point. 3-2 for the DS.

    • *************My Verdict*******************

The final score suggest it is a close finish between the PSP and the DS. In real life it is different. The gameplay and available games are the most important aspects for succes. Second is the handheld specific aspect, the battery lifetime. On these three aspects the DS scored his points. A good game experience is nice and the same goes for the other features, but in the end we are talking about Gaming. And I must say, Nintendo got the best cards here: Most games available, Best gameplay opportunities and the best battery.
So, the monopoly position of Nintendo is not getting in any danger. The only thing that’s rest now is to wait and watch what the market will say…
