DALLAS -- The NBA fined Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy $100,000 -- the largest amount ever for a coach -- on Monday, a day after Van Gundy accused officials of targeting center Yao Ming this postseason and saying Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is to blame.

While Van Gundy laughed off the penalty and Yao offered to pick up half the tab, the matter jumped to a far more serious level. Commissioner David Stern called the fine " an intermediary step," adding that an investigation will continue once the Rockets finish their playoff run.

He said further punishment is possible, even implying that Van Gundy could face a lifetime ban.

" If he´s going to say things like that, he´s not going to continue in this league," Stern said. " If the attitude reflected in those comments continues to be public, he´s going to have a big problem with me as long as I´m commissioner."

Stern said the league is both furious at what Van Gundy said and that he refuses to divulge the official he claims told him that referees " were looking at Yao harder because of Mark´s complaints" to the league office.

" This is the first case I can remember when an allegation has been made and the perpetrator hasn´t cooperated," Stern said. " At this time of year, there usually is a craziness in the land that has to do with referees as coaches jockey for position. This one, in our view, set a new low for that. That´s why the fine is what it was and that´s why the investigation is continuing."

Van Gundy got himself into trouble by telling three reporters at the team hotel in Dallas on Sunday night that a referee not working the playoffs called him after the Rockets went up 2-0 and warned that Yao was mentioned in an online evaluation from supervisor of officials Ronnie Nunn.

Van Gundy added that because Cuban " has been hard on" the league and officials, " he´s gotten the benefit."

" I didn´t think that really worked in the NBA, but in this case it has," Van Gundy said.

He stood by his complaints Monday and said he´s made many of them privately to the league all season.

" I said what I said. I believe what I believe and I´ve seen what I´ve seen. They´ve got to do what they think is right," Van Gundy said. " I would watch all of ( Yao´s) 20 fouls with anyone. And I would have no problems making my case that he´s not refereed appropriately. I stand by that."

Cuban, who has been fined more than $1 million since buying the team five years ago, found little irony in someone getting fined for comments involving him and his pet target, the way officials do their job.

" It´s nice to see someone else buying the coffee and Danish for the NBA," he said.

When first learning about Van Gundy´s comments, Cuban said in an e-mail that the accusations were " crazy" and " an insult to officials." He also noted that Dallas center Erick Dampier has picked up quick fouls in every game in this series.

Cuban said the Mavericks sent the league a list of plays they thought could have been called moving screens on Yao and backup Dikembe Mutombo. He said the league responded that " nine were actually moving screens and should have been called but were not."

Just think, last year Travis Outlaw played a total of 19 minutes......and scored just 8 points the whole season.

This year, the guy has shown everyone most of what he can really do. And if the guy can sharpen his ability to drive to the lane and knock down jumpers and 3´s, maybe - just maybe - this team won´t have to grab a SG in the offseason! ( OK, that was stretching it a little)

But seriously, they need to find a lot of time on the floor for him so he can continue to excel. One of the lone bright spots of the entire year.

It´s no secret Outlaw is turning into a better player over time and he is seemingly a class act as well. This post isn´t so much about Outlaw, but the one of the guys we are probably losing who is helping to turn our young players into GREAT young players(and improving the veterans to boot), and that is Tim Grgurich.

I strongly feel we need to keep in the in the fold as well, and as this is ´You Play the GM´, it is something I would make a priority. Anyone else?

Clyde Drexler had someone there working on him and his game. Someone he said he wouldn´t have been the player he was without, and from what I have heard, Tim is seemingly one of these guys. It is a shame he wants to leave after only 2 years, but I think it would be great to see him stay and work with Outlaw and the rest of the team in turning them into all they can be. Anyone else feel the same way? Let it be heard.

Travis has great potential and I look forward to seeing him develop. However, in order to get the most out of Travis and the Blazers´ other young guys, management MUST get rid of Darius Miles. He, like Bonzi & Sheed, is a cancer in the locker room. I hope and pray that Travis, Telfair, and the next generation don´t view Darius as their role model. If they do, we´re all doomed...

Although I´m not too sure about this ´Outlaw as Shooting Guard´ experiment for next year, whatever position he plays at is fine by me.

He has and will continue to quietly grow as an excellent player, strong on skills, athleticism, and work ethic.

Yes bring Outlaw back. His fourth quarter in the last game showed he was willing to take the shot and not be nervous. Another strong summer of learning all the skills to play the off-guard spot and this guy will be talked about as an All-Star.

OK, we all know the kid is an amazing physical talent-- his hops are all-Association. But when you look at what else he brings to the table, you can see what Outlaw means to this team years down the road.

His mid-range jumper is good, maybe better than anyone else remaining on the team.

He can come out of nowhere to block shots, and not just shots in the lane. He blocks three-pointers into the cheap seats. That´s awesome.

He´s cheap, young, and eagar, and his background and groundedness could translate into him helping out incoming kids 10 years down the road. The way things look now, I don´t ever want to let him go.

The Blazers have to bring this kid back. He has shown this season that he belongs. I think he can be a star. Kind of in the Tracy Mcgrady mold. Superior athleticism, solid jump shot and he can get to the basket. The sky is the limit for this kid. Who are the people who voted to " send him packing"?

The only reason the Blazers should trade Outlaw is to help get rid of Miles. That said, Travis has shown some great potential and needs to get solid reserve minutes next season. Also, his salary won´t break the bank.

First off, this kid can jump higher than anyone I´ve ever seen. In just a little amount of burn towards the end of the season showed that he could a very promising defense force on this team for years to come. I would hope at this point, we would´ve learned to keep the young guys, and give them a chance to shine. We didn´t do it with Jermaine and look what he became. He´s a talented and respectful kid, and hopefully a big part of the future along with Bassy and Khryhapa. DMiles should follow the act of this kid.

Although I moved from Oregon a couple of years ago, I still keep tabs on the Blazers. Having followed the team´s ups in the late 80s up to 1999, followed by the downward spiral, exacerbated by more headcases than I would care to think about, I am looking for something to believe in again. An optimist by nature, I think our future is looking up, particularly when we have players such as Travis Outlaw in uniform.

Outlaw is a solid citizen, an asset to the city of Portland. He is humble, yet confident; he plays hard, and is willing to learn from his mistakes, and from mentors, such as SAR.

He is highly coachable, allowing us to get rid of coachkiller Miles ( I PLEAD with some team to be foolish enough to believe in this lazy malcontent´s potential, freeing the Blazers from his insane contract, so that we can sigh Outlaw for the long term).

Go Blazers! Go Outlaw! Give us something to believe in again!

Bring back Travis Outlaw? Talk about a no-brainer... the only people who´d say send him packing are anti-Blazer lurkers. You just can´t be a true Blazers fan and not love this guy. He´s like Darius Miles with his head screwed on right, and has at least as much potential ( I think more).

I´m dating myself a bit, but I sort of think of him as an upmarket Jerome Kersey. He´s someone everyone in Rip City can be proud of as a player and as a person.

Maybe that Bob Whitsitt guy wasn´t as bad as we thought. It seems that Travis Outlaw has the most potential of any Blazer. Physical dominance at your position can make you a star and he has it. Keep him and hope that he continues to work as hard as he obviously has and we might be on to something.

My sense is that Travis is a good kid, who behind the scene works very hard and he wants to earn a paycheck in the league for an extended period of time. What I´ve seen of him on the floor that he is athletic, entertaining and he works hard. I´m not sure what position he plays and I don´t know how intelligent he is as a player. I say his positives outweigh his negatives though(the only negative really, are just questions about his potential). You got to keep him, if not for anything other than to see what kind of player he can become. And, keep Grg around one more year to continue to work with the young man.

Travis proved over the end-stretch of the season that he has a ton of potential. I´m glad he had a chance to play and not suffer from Jermaine O´Neal syndrome: warming the bench, being sent elsewhere, and turning into a star. Lets keep him and see just how good he can get.

Travis Travis Travis, how much you have grown! Finally, after all the talk from Patters, Nash, Mo, etc., about how Travis has improved each day, in each practice and how they have never seen such improvement on a daily basis, WE finally got the chance to see what they were raving about. And I, like a lot of fans must say, WE BELIEVE IN YOU TRAVIS!!!

This kid goes from being the glorified towel boy, to possibly being our most potent scorer in the very near future. He can jump, he can shoot ( he is also getting the 3 pt shot down), and is learning how to play defense and rebound, man, this kid might be able to do it all.

Young Travis, you have simply won us over. You even solidified our love with the winning basket against the Lakers. Like you really needed help getting our love by doing that, but still, we love you Travis.

With Travis´s obvious willingness to be coached, his tireless work ethic, solid upbringing, and the way he conducts himself because all of it, the Blazers and us fans are very blessed to have such a young, outstanding player and person, to help bring back the Rip City days. Keep up the great work Travis. You have shown us a glimps of what you can become, now seize the moment, and run with it. Reach for that " Star", and make us proud!

There´s no way they can get rid of Travis. He is an up and coming star in the NBA if he can continue to develop the way has thus far. His pull up jumper is unstoppable and his jumper is already better then Miles´ ( not that that is saying much, but its an indication of where they should be looking). If the Blazers trade Travis, he will be the next Jermaine and I don´t think this city is ready for another player to turn into a superstar after they leave the team.

I love Travis Outlaw and was thrilled over his development this year. He is long, fluid, and can really jump! He can actually hit the top of the backboard! Plus, he´s a nice guy with a great attitude and fits into our youth movement. I´d definitely keep him; however, I realize that nobody is untradeable if the right deal came along. But the deal would have to be really sweet to give up Travis!

Ah l´atmosphère unique des PO, avec sa litanie de petites phrases assassines, de vaines polémiques et de paranoia aigue: Sir Charles qui casse du TP, Marion qui se montre méprisant envers Gasol lors d´une conférence d´après-match, Adelman qui s´en prend à Evans et sa propension à se laisser tomber facilement, Karl qui charge Ginobili et sa tendance à rentrer comme un bourrin dans les défenseurs adverses...

Rasho et Nazr peuvent commencer à trembler devant l´ex joueur de l´ASVEL...
Les Pacers l´emportent à Boston avec un petit retour surprise, celui de Tinsley
