1. Open control panel
2. go to Sound And AUdio Devices
3. On Hardware Tab, in the list click on Audio Codecs
4. Select " Fraunhoffer MPEG Layer . .." codec
5. Click Remove
6. Don´t restart even if asked to
7. Open WIndows Explorer
8. In . .<WinDir>\System32\ ( or just the system folder, depends on your OS)
folder delete/rename the files " l3codeca.acm" and " l3codecp.acm"
9. Restart WIndows
10. Download " wma8_redist.exe" and " wma9_redist.exe" from Internet location ( listed below)
11. Install both packages, first " 8" then " 9"
12. Open Sound And Audio Devices in Control Panel again
13. On Hardware Tab, in the list, doubleclick the now available
" Fraunhofer..." codec
14. In the codec properties, set priority to " 1".
Check the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec´s properties
and make sure that the " use this codec" is checked!
15. Start Freelancer, New Game: Sound is working fine now.

Here are steps 1 to 5 for windows 98:
1. Go to controll panel
2. Go to multimedia
3. Go to the hardware tab, maximize the audio codecs tree
4. Select the fraunhoffer codec
5. Click properties and then click remove

Si vous perdez du son durant l´utilisation de freelancer c´est du a des codec audio non approprier il faut utiliser celui qui convient a Freelancer.
suivez les étapes suivante si des sons de dialogue sont perdu après l´installation:
- désinstaller les 3ème partie de codec audio ( exemple Frauhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec) ou les Nimo pack de votre système
panneau de configuration > son et périphérique > onglet matériel > sélectionner " Codecs audio" > onglet propriété
- Désinstaller Freelancer.
- Aller dans le dossier C:\WINDOWS\system32 et éffacer le fichier “l3codecp.acm”. si il existe d´autre fichier du genre “l3codeca.acm”, éffacer le également.
- Si vous utilisez Win 98 ou Me, ouvrir le fichier System.ini ( vous le trouverez sous C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM). Effacer la ligne qui commence par “msacm.l3acm=”. Dans le cas ou il s´agit du Nimo pack codec, on lit “msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm”.
- Si vous utilisez Win 2000 ou XP, ouvrir le systeme de registre ( Dans le menu démarer > Executer > Regedit.exe) effectuer une recherche pour trouver msacm.l3acm sinon la clé de localisation est key:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\
Drivers32\msacm.l3acm et éffacez la!
- ouvrir le Cd de freelancer et le dosier REDIST. double click sur “WMFDist.exe” et suivre les instructions.
- Installer Freelancer.

salut!
il faut que tu regle le probleme de son sinon tu resteras bloqué dans la campagne solo ( notamment à la 3ème mission). Voila comment faire :

General Sound Issues
When you are playing Freelancer, you may not be able to hear some sounds, such as the characters´ voices. To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Turn Off 3D Sound
In Freelancer, click Options.
Click Audio.
Click to clear the Use 3D Sound option.
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
Remove the Codec: Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices or Sound and Audio Devices.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click Audio Codes, and then click Properties.
Click the Properties tab.
Click Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec, and then click Remove.
Click Yes to remove the codec, and then restart the computer if you are prompted to restart.
Click OK, and then click OK again.
Remove the Codec: Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click MultiMedia or Sounds and Multimedia.
Click the Devices or Advanced tab.
Expand Audio Compression Codecs.
Click Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec, and then click Properties.
Click Remove. When you are prompted to remove the codec, click Yes.
Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the codec.
If you are prompted, restart your computer.
Reinstall the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
Hold down the SHIFT key, and then insert the Freelancer disc into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Double-click the My Computer icon.
Click the Freelancer disc icon. On the File menu, click Open.
Open the Redist folder.
Double-click the Wmfdist.exe file to install the missing codec.
When you start Freelancer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Freelancer failed to initialize sound. Verify that your sound card is working and that the latest version of DirectSound is installed. If the problem persists, try reinstalling the game.
To resolve this issue, download and install the most recent drivers for your sound card, or download and install the most recent version of DirectX. To obtain the current version of DirectX, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/[...]wnloads/default.asp
When you try to play Freelancer, the game sound may not play correctly. To resolve this issue, turn off Hardware Sound Acceleration. To do so, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
Click the Sound tab.
In the DirectX Features pane, drag the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider bar all the way to the left ( the " No acceleration" setting).
Click Exit, and then start the game.
If you can now hear the sounds as expected, repeat these steps and increase the hardware sound acceleration level setting one notch, and try again. Do this until the hardware acceleration setting is as high as possible without corrupting the game sound.
