Zoé's Ark is a French charity organization with the aim of increasing awareness of the crisis in Darfur and providing aid for children affected by the conflict. Then the justice of this country condemns the main members to hard labour. The president of Chad Idriss Déby Itno and the president of France Nicolas Sarkozy will intervene.
Zoé's Ark was founded in 2005 by volunteer fireman Éric Breteau, former president of the French 4x4 Federation, who named it after a girl orphaned by the December 2004 Asian tsunami. The group, registered as a non-governmental organization with the French authorities, sought to aid children affected by the tsunami. It spread its activities in Sudan and in Chad in 2007, through "Opération Darfour" (Children Rescue).
Actions in Indonesia:
In Indonesia, the operation " Portfolios for Children " aims at giving the possibility of reaching places of culture, intellectual enrichment and blooming to more than 100,000 children of the region .
The Chadian affair:
The project of the association:
The " Operation Darfour on 2007 " aims at collecting gifts and organizing the evacuation of orphan children under five(up to ten thousand of them), so that families may adopt them for an average of €1,490.
Progress of the operation:
At least a part of the relatives of the concerned children received false information on the objective of the project. The members of the Ark of Zoé association were accused of having known that it was not about orphans, but they denied it. October 25th, 2007, volunteers, people in charge of the association, members of the Spanish crew of the plane were arrested by the authorities as they were to leave Chad with one hundred and three children. They were suspected of kidnapping the children. The Chadian president, Idriss Déby, asserted that the concerned children were not orphans. The association evoked an operation intended to evacuate the orphaned children, the victims of the civil war, from Darfur towards Europe.
All in all, the president of the association Éric Breteau and his partner Émilie Lelouch, Philippe Van Winkelberg, Alain Peligat, Dominique Aubry, Nadia Mérimi, the journalist Marie Agnès Peleran, as well as two other journalists who accompanied them, seven Spaniards and two Chadians, were imprisoned in Abéché (an east Chadian city).
