First of all the media are more and more important in society with TV, radio, press, cinema and internet.
They have an important place in the society with politics, socialisation, information…however they influence more and more people. But can we say that the media are detrimental to democracy ?
Democracy is a doctrine which let the sovereignty to citizen. The media are a mean of communication and, detrimental to democracy is equivalent to dangerous to democracy.
The first question that arises is how the media are detrimental to democracy and the second is in spite of that how the media are essential to democracy ?
First and foremost, the media make easier means of communication.
Indeed, they make easier transmission of democracy ideas. Everybody can know the truth. They denounce government’s abuse for example. They inform government’s schemes so the population can react.
This denunciations allow to contesting to society, so debates are done.
Effectively, thanks to this debate, the population govern and show her ideas. In consequence, the population can choose a low. So democracy is assured. Media must be create more and more forms of means of expressions and information.
Indeed, the media are vectors of democracy when they are creating news forms of means of expressions and information. Democracy is assured if people can show them ideas with more an more easier. And the media must be high-performance to inform people.
Above all, forms of media are generally by mouth orally, and the liberty of expression is the basis of democracy.
Indeed, they influence the population, for instance with politics elections, they give importance on a candidate so people are influenced to choose him ( election Nixon-Kennedy ).In consequence, elections are distorted.
Moreover, they can lie to the population, so information are distorted and it’s detrimental to democracy given that people lean on fake information. For example they can use feelings to make people sensitive.
We should bear in mind that information of the media can be distorted, thus people don’t know the truth.
In a nutshell arguments are well-balanced so we can’t say that the media are detrimental to democracy but the fact still remains that there is manipulations.
As far as I am concerned, I think that the media aren’t detrimental to democracy because they inform lots of people in spite of its influence. They are important in the society and democracy. However there is no denying that they influence people a lot.
Similarly, can we say that the media can be detrimental to the population ?
