Sir Arthur Conan Doyle naît le 22 mai 1859, à Édimbourg en Écosse. La famille Doyle est une famille nombreuse, puisque le jeune Arthur aura neuf frères et sœurs. Son père est un obscur fonctionnaire, qui meurt alcoolique. Sa mère, d´origine irlandaise, descend des Plantagenêts.
Après des études primaires et secondaires dans des institutions catholiques, il devient agnostique. De 1876 à 1881, il étudie la médecine à l´Université d´Édimbourg puis exerce quelque temps, mais sans succès notable, la profession de médecin. L´abscence de clientèle lui permet de s´adonner à l´écriture. Il publie ses premiers écrits (non holmesiens) en 1879, mais c´est en novembre 1887 que Sherlock Holmes apparaît pour la première fois, dans Une étude en rouge, publiée dans le Beeton´s Christmas Annual. Il abandonne rapidement la médecine pour se consacrer uniquement à l´écriture.
Il a également une activité politique et rédige divers travaux, dont un pamphlet : La guerre en Afrique du Sud : ses causes et son organisation (The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct). En 1902, il est anobli et devient ainsi Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
À partir de 1918, il se consacre surtout au spiritisme et entreprend une tournée de conférences, tout en rédigeant divers ouvrages, dont La nouvelle révélation (1918), dans lesquels il prétend démontrer la survie après la mort et la possibilité d´entrer en contact avec l´au-delà.
