The new system would probably not reduce the number of shuttle flights needed to complete the International Space Station. There is only so much cargo the shuttle can pack in its payload bay for each visit. But NASA is nevertheless working on a plan to minimise the number of launches so that it can retire the shuttle fleet by 2010.
The new Station-Shuttle Power Transfer System will mean as much as an extra 8 kilowats of electricity for the orbiter. "It´s enough so that you don´t have to use up the oxygen supplies to feed the fuel cells", says NASA Johnson Space Center spokesperson Kylie Clem. The diverted power should not hinder the space station as science activity is reduced when the shuttle is docked. the $68 milion project will add to Boeing´s $12.8 bilion ISS contact.
