M'embête de traduire. 8/10
The film is meant to be boring. And it is very cynical. Because, the place of man in the universe is boring, insignificant. All he can bring along in the infinite majesty is his stupidness and vanity. Every scene in 2001 where man is present, and above all when several individuals are present, the content's idiocy is pushed to the extreme. Notably, all the dialogues are utterly clueless. Kubrick seems to amuse himself a lot doing this. And everything around is beautiful and mesmerizing. That's how 2001 works, with this contrast: a visual and sound theatre on one hand, and on the other this funny presence of our specie. One of the scenes that show it well is when we're introduced to the Jupiter mission with commandant HisName doing some jogging: he's just so out of the picture, his presence and gestures are so absurd. Works terrific. And that makes for a unique tone. What 2001 tells us is that we're alienated, lost, we haven't evolved at all and still are monkeys with a tool in hand, we're ugly. 2001 is mocking us, hard. At least, that's my interpretation (but reading the other reviews, I can't help but think that people haven't understood the film one bit).
