1) First Hard Rock
At the end of the 60’s, the Rock n’ Roll know an musical type explosion : the Jazz, the Blues, and Indian music are behind the psycadelic period of Rolling Stones and Beatles …
But some musicians want to revolutionise this Rock, electrify this old music with the violent thrilling guitars sound …
It’s how begin Hard Rock age.
This is certainly the musical wave which will take the highest number of groups, albums or legendary songs.
All begin by the old “British Rock” by way of groups like “the Who” or “Yardbirds” , with new guitars riffs, but this was very slow like the Rolling Stones ’s music …
But the 1st authentic Hard Rock group is in no doubt Led Zeppelin which begin in 1969, in England, by the renowned guitarist Jimmy Page, and singer Robert Plant.
They revolutionise Rock n’ Roll with super-songs like Heartbreaker or Stairway to Heaven ( above 100 millions albums has been sold since that time ! ) …
At the same period, the 2 other Hard Rock fathers begin to explode on American radios.
I talk about Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath is the heavy metal ancestor, like Deep Purple is the Punk ancestor.
Black Sabbath was a very dark and death group, with some satanic songs ( Paranoid) by the singer Ozzy Osbourne.
Deep Purple was very classic in their songs, like one of the most famous song over the world : “Smoke on the Water”.
They all introduce their rebel opinions ( against the society or the laws ) around the world…
In the 70’s , a lot of groups grew up, and some musicians became heroes for fans like Jimmy Hendrix.
In the USA, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and KISS are first at all music charts.
But one group is certainly the best representative of Hard Rock: AC/DC, with one of the best guitars player : Angus Young.
Since its foundation in 1974, in Australia, they’ve sold about 200 millions albums all over the world.
They have made 18 albums and they’re already very very famous everywhere, like their song “ Highway to Hell” in 1979.
2) Punk
During this time, in Great Britain, 2 guys, named Steve Jones and Paul Cook decided to form a band, in 1972.
At this time, they couldn’t predicted the effect they were to have on a great part of the world !
With Jimmy Mackin and Steve Hayes, they became the Sex Pistols, and the idols of all a generation of teenagers …
The Sex Pistols ‘s music didn’t really make a revolution in the 70’s, but this was the first real Punk, with very aggressive lyrics, political opinions, and some of their songs like “no future in England” or “god save the queen” are now some monuments of the trash talking.
But the story finished on 1979 when Paul died from an heroin overdose on February the 2nd …
And from this time to today, some groups has been trying to make some Punk, but this music has been in mourning … but the beast was only sleeping, and we can see today, lot of groups are trying to make the same ( like Sum 41, or Alien Ant Farm)
3) Heavy Metal
In the 80’s, a new wave explode in Britain: the Heavy Metal, darker, faster, and more violent than Punk.
Leather, clover, motorbikes, death, sex and drugs are the principal objects of lyrics.
No one group was much popular than the others at the begin of the 80’s, they were all very famous like Judas Priest, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy Osbourne after, Van Halen, or Accept ….
We could see in many countries illustrious heavy metal groups.
Like Scorpions in Germany with “ I’m still loving you”, or our famous Trust in France, critiqued , but so much popular beside teenagers, in 1980, with the song “Antisocial” .
But the heavy metal master is sure Metallica, which has burnt up this the wave since 1985.
It was the most popular group with AC/DC and Queen at this time…
Many heavy metal groups stopped to make music,so at 80’s end, heavy metal despaired but some musicians continues to make this music, like Metallica, or Stratovarius …
4) The grunge
At the end of 80’s , the hard rock begin to be more violent , more strong , and more fast , with the apparition of groups which make new hard rock , like the trash metal , speed metal , the first black/death/metal with Slayer , Pantera , Anthrax or Sepultura .
But they are all overwhelm by a new wave from USA : the Grunge , an very slow hard rock . This wave came from west USA coast , with the biggest group : Nirvana , which is lead by the hero-singer Kurt Cobain . They sold above a million of albums of their best : “Nevermind” in 1991 , and the most popular song : “Smell like teen spirit” which have become popular with the famous riff of the song beginning . But , in 1994 , Kurt Cobain committed a suicide , and Nirvana is deleted , with all the grunge movement. But today , some groups try to make music like grunge , as Puddle of Mudd .
5) The neo-metal
At the grunge death , the hard rock knew an explosion , with the new group Korn , which came from a little city of California . The leader Jonathan Davis , lead the group on a new way of music : the neo metal was born .
Then , a lot of groups tried to “follow the leader” Korn . But all of them have their own personalities , and the neo metal split in different styles of metal , like the industrial , with the antichrist superstar Marylin Manson . the trash metal , with Superjoint ritual , or the death metal with Cradle of filth . But the perfect example of the metal band which has a personal identity is certainly Slipknot . This band which came from Des Moines , The biggest city in the Iowa state , is very particular . All the members wear their own mask , which reflects their own personalities , And they all have all a number , from 1 to 8 . The slipknot style is the only one , and no one can copy it , but we can describe it as a mix of neo , black , speed , and death metal . So , all the metal bands are different , but they all have the same influences , and the same ideas in their lyrics , which talk all above the same subjects : Sex , Drug , Satan , Violence , Pain .
Many groups are very popular by the teenagers, like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, or Pleymo in France …
An other group is very famous around the world : it’s sure System of a Down, which has a very particular type of metal, because we can’t say what is it …it’s very speed, and they talk about chaos, politic, or many things, it’s one of the best new Metal group …
6) The new punk
The punk music really died in 1979 , but today , some groups try to reorganize the movement . These bands are today very presents on radio or on TV , and the new punk CDs are sale very easily . This little revolution has probably taken place on our days because the punk music tries to bring a message of happiness , whereas the metal , which only talk about the worst things on earth , without thinking of the lot of things which are better than yesterday . So , Good Charlotte , Sum 41 have probably succeed in attracting people , in the actual world climate , with some music not to make people thinking on bad things , but just music for enjoying music .
Offspring is certainly one the most popular punk group , with many speed songs and good riff …
