Battlefield Bad Company 2 set a new standard for first person shooter video games and this year's true sequel to Battlefield 2 looks to be even better. Here are 10 reasons why you should be excited about Battlefield 3.
1. The Single Player Experience
Taking place in the year 2014 and assuming the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn players will visit new and exciting locations such as Paris, New York and Tehran. Battlefield 3 promises to the deliver the best single-player experience in the series to date, featuring over 20 hours of cinematic action sequences with gritty and realistic atmosphere. We hope that the single-player mode can surpass the expectations that the multiplayer gaming community have and provide a refreshing distraction from the rehashed franchises of late.
2. The Frostbite 2.0 Engine
Frostbite 2.0 is the next generation of Frostbite that will debut with Battlefield 3. It will take full advantage of the latest DirectX 11 graphic cards, 64-bit processors and will also feature enhanced in-game destruction with Destruction engine 3.0. It's hard to comprehend how much the Battlefield series was defined by the Destruction Engine, it has literally changed the face of multiplayer gaming by introducing new tactics and strategies to the way we play. As the true successor to Battlefield 2, classic maps will finally be revitalised and brought to life with Frostbite 2.0, something that will leave Battlefield fans craving for more.
3. The Enlighten Engine
Geomerics is an innovation-led company developing cutting-edge graphics technology for the games industry. DICE and Geomerics have been working together since close to the birth of Enlighten. The integration into Frostbite 2.0 showcases the use of real time radiosity. So where does enlighten come in to play? DICE wanted a lighting solution with fast iteration times and support for dynamic environments. Previous static techniques used by DICE gave great results, but caused painful waiting times whilst lightmaps were built. They wanted and required a solution that would give artists more creative freedom to create instead of wait.
Enlighten Real-time lighting means instant feedback for artisits, allowing them to create rapidly towards their vision. Enlighten guarantees high quality lighting, the ability to add new light types, including area and environment lights allowing for the creation of dynamic open worlds rendered in real time. With integration directly in to the Frostbite engine the effects are stunning as we can watch real time lighting evolve as the physical locations of the map are permanently changed with Destruction 3.0.
4. Welcome back, Prone!
6 years gone and prone is finally back, there isn't much to say just "keep your head down"!
5. The Return of Jets
Bad Company 2 brought destruction for which we are eternally grateful, but we lost a much loved aspect of the Battlefield series; Jets. Battlefield 3 promises to rectify the situation not just for PC gamers but Console gamers too. With the largest maps seen to date Battlefield 3 will finally bring Jets back to the players control. Personally we can't wait to drop a bomb and finally witness the awe of Frostbite 2.0 as we destroy a building from the comfort of our Jet.
6. ANT
ANT stands for Animation Toolkit and is a shared technology featured in EA sports titles. ANT was built as a custom animation system to sit above traditional motion captured animation to allow the procedural manipulation of animation in real time. In order to truly match real life movement, motion captured animation is still the answer to stay authentic and truly realistic. However you can only fit so many animations in to memory due to the hardware limitations of existing consoles. Knowing that, EA knew the way to truly build dynamic and fun gameplay was to use a mixture of run-time manipulation and motion capture. The end deliverable is superb and has resulted in some of the best animation seen in a first person shooter to date.
7. Stefan Strandberg
Stefan Strandberg is the Audio Director at DICE and was responsible for some of the best audio featured in the Battlefield series. His teams recordings could make Battlefield 3 the most realistic sounding war experience in gaming. His claim that the sound in Battlefield 3 is better, cleaner and more accurate than Bad Company 2 is extremely exciting news for the Battlefield 2 sequel.
8. Co-Op Mode
Although little information has been confirmed or leaked the inclusion of Co-op is most definitely welcomed. We can speculate that neither PC or console versions will have splitscreen support due to the already demanding gameplay, however, co-op for both platforms will likely require internet and a willing and able team mate.
9. Back to Karkand
The best news so far is the pre-order bonus inclusion of classic Battlefield 2 content. 4 maps including Strike at Karkand, Sharqi Peninsula, Gulf of Oman and Wake Island are already confirmed. The additional inclusion of 10 classic weapons, 4 classic vehicles, exclusive trophies and dog tags and unique customisable equipment was a welcome surprise. If the future is DLC then the future is bright.
10. The Year 2011
It's been 6 long years since Battlefield 2 and we have yet to see a true successor. Fear not, 2011 is the year we've been waiting for, at last we have confirmation that the game will see shop shelves in November with the beta most likely coming in September. At last Battlefield fans will finally see the much loved features of Battlefield 2 merge with the ever successful Bad Company 2 for what is touted as the true successor "Battlefield 3".
