Newcastle set to spend
Robson is keen for new signings
Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepherd has given Sir Bobby Robson the green light to spend during the summer in a bid to challenge for the Premiership title.
Shepherd believes next season is a huge stepping stone in the future of the club and feels they can have a major say in the title race next term.
Robson has already spent about £43m in two years at St James´ Park.
But an overall operating profit of £12m in the six months to January has prompted Shepherd to pledge further funding.
" I won´t mention figures but we are probably one of only a handful of clubs with the resources to go out and strengthen our squad," Shepherd said.
" We´ve already sat down with Bobby and identified possible targets and we´ll be sitting down again soon to discuss them further.
" Make no mistake, next year is a massive season for us. There will be ins and outs at Newcastle."
Shepherd looks set to plough at least that £12m profit into new players, with Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam, known as Mido, believed to be among their top targets.
Ajax striker Mido heads the list
Mido is on loan at Celta Vigo from Ajax and, at 20, is the perfect age for Newcastle.
" The whole structure at this club is to bring in young players. Ideally, we want quality youngsters who are ready now but who are going to get even better," Shepherd added.
Robson has also been linked with moves for Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Brett Emerton.
Southampton´s England full-back Wayne Bridge is also a target, along with Marseille´s Dutch centre-back Daniel van Buyten.

Allemagne: Beckenbauer aime Morientes

" Rustu invites Wenger to make his move" ( "Times")
By Oliver Kay
ARSENAL are preparing to step up their efforts to sign Rüstü Reçber, the Turkey goalkeeper, who confirmed yesterday that Highbury is his most likely destination this summer. Arsène Wenger has considered various options in his search for a successor to David Seaman, but a lack of transfer funds has led him to identify Rüstü, who is available on a free transfer from Fenerbahçe, as the most suitable of the available candidates.
Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has bemoaned his lack of financial resources, claiming that he would not be able to compete with Manchester United if the clubs were bidding for the same player. Wenger’s three-man shortlist was also understood to include Paul Robinson, the Leeds United goalkeeper, and Sebastian Frey, of Parma, but he is set to focus on Rüstü in the growing belief that Robinson, who would cost about £8 million, is bound for Old Trafford.
That would allow Wenger to use most of his reported £15 million budget to reinforce a defence that ultimately proved Arsenal’s undoing as they lost their Premiership title to United. His hopes of enticing either John Terry or William Gallas from Chelsea may rest on whether the Stamford Bridge club qualifies for the Champions League.

Batistuta thinking of England
Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta has revealed that he has received offers from two English teams and will announce in a fortnight which Premier League side he will play for next season. The 34-year-old has said many times that he wants to leave Italy and play in England before ending his career. Although currently playing for Inter Milan, his registration belongs to Roma, whose president Franco Sensi intends to transfer him at the end of the season.
