Fergie: Why I Need Smith and Saha at United
Spoiled 4 Choice: Fergie´s Strikers
" We´ve been short of strikers. I´ve now addressed that by having Alan, Ruud, Louis and Ole Gunnar."
Sir Alex Ferguson
Read: Fergie´s verdict on Smith
Message Board: Have your say
Alan Smith´s £7m transfer to Old Trafford surprised many people - and not just because of the striker´s West Yorkshire allegiances.
Another reason for the raising of eyebrows was the fact United had spent £12.8m on another top marksman, Louis Saha, just a few months earlier.
Did the Reds really need another forward? How would the ex-Leeds star fit into a team which sometimes lines up with just one front-man? Here, Sir Alex Ferguson explains his reasons for signing Smith and Saha in the same year...
You’ve signed two strikers in the past six months, and both were first-choice at their previous clubs. How do you plan to accommodate Louis Saha and Alan Smith?
”We’ve been a little bit short in that department ( strikers) in the last couple of years. Having four strikers gives you the problem of who to pick every Saturday. When I had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham was always complaining. If we picked Teddy and Ole Gunnar, then Andy was always complaining. But we could handle the situation because we knew we were dealing with top players. So that’s not a problem for me. The important thing is to have players of that quality. Having Alan, Ruud, Louis and Ole Gunnar, we feel we have strengthened ourselves in that way.”
Could Smith play a different role for United, perhaps in midfield?
”The fact he’s played in other positions is incidental – he’s a centre-forward. A real old-fashioned, aggressive, all-round, centre-forward. I think we’re quite well covered in midfield, we’ve got a lot of options and a variety of players. And now I’ve addressed the point of having four strikers, that’s the essential part.”
Will the signings of Saha and Smith help you to rest Ruud when the need arises?
”Absolutely. Experience tells you about the need for rest and leaving Ruud – or any player - out of certain games. When you get to March, that’s when you really need fresh strikers. All the major countries raised the point about players being tired in the European Championships. It’s a valid point, and we’re no different. If you play our game at our level with the type of competitions we are involved in, you get stretched in every match. The area in which you win games - with your strikers - is the area you need to think about resting players in more than any other.”
Smith and his fellow new signing Gabriel Heinze both have hard-man reputations. Presumably you see physical strength as a key ingredient in a successful squad?
”The team of ten years ago had incredible aggression and will to win. It was also physically endowed. It was a really strong, powerful team with players like Ince, Robson, Hughes and Cantona. The physical presence was incredible.
”This team is entirely different, perhaps with more technical ability. But it doesn’t mean they are not brave. They’re brave enough, make no mistake about it. There are two different ways of being brave, and one of those can be to have the ball and always want it. Manchester United players have to have the ball. That’s where the courage comes into it.”
Alan Smith has long been a transfer target for Sir Alex Ferguson, but there was always one snag; an issue of birthplace.
Smith’s name was often bandied around the manager’s inner circle as a player of real substance; a player with the personality Ferguson looks for in equal measure to skill, technical ability, pace and power in his acquisitions.
Roy Keane is the embodiment of that philosophy of bringing in players with winning pedigree.
However, like fans from both sides of the Pennines, Ferguson was sure Smith would never make the controversial switch.
”Last year we discussed him time and time again,” Ferguson says. “But my fears early on were that he would never come to United. But you don’t know until you ask.
”When I found out he wanted to come to Manchester United I thought, ‘that’ll do me’.
”When I met him, I couldn’t have been more impressed with his character. All he wanted, all he kept saying was, ‘I want to get here, I want to prove myself. I can’t look forward to something more than this opportunity’.
”When you get that enthusiasm and you know what he’s like having played against him a few times, you know you are getting a player of real substance.”
Smith has evidently made an impression on his new boss; whether it be with some impressive performances in training, or that he had the bravery to cross the Pennine divide.
At a press conference this week where unveiled Smith and Liam Miller as new signings, Sir Alex even joked with the striker whether he would complain if left out of the team to accommodate Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha.
In whatever form, it is Smith’s character that has impressed Ferguson so much. In the same way that Roy Keane’s relentless desire for triumph earns such great admiration from Ferguson, Smith’s decision to join United in search of success - sacrificial to his roots as ‘Leeds born and bred’ – is a choice held in high esteem by the Scot.
”It was a brave decision,” admits Ferguson. “It would have been far easier to take one of the half dozen other offers that he had. But he’s not afraid of any situation and he wanted to come here.
”We have a centre-forward with five years’ experience in the Premier Division and European football and is still only 23.
”You see last season what he did for Leeds United. It’s a team that went through all the gamut of emotions.
”Everything that could have happened to Leeds last season did happen. They’re position in the league, the disappointment of their financial situation.
”It can’t be easy for any young player to play in those circumstances. But he was the player who kept their chances of staying in the league alive. I think that speaks volumes for a 23 year old.”

The deal which was 11.75 million up front and a further 7.52 million over 3 years was rejected by Everton on Thursday morning. Everton rejected the bid. United are considering another bid, however they will not include Nicky Butt as he has no desire to play for Everton.
