Ole Goner
The Old Trafford futures of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John O’Shea have been thrown into doubt. Norwegian striker Solskjaer was left behind yesterday as Manchester United set off on their pre-season tour of America after a recurrence of his knee injury. It is the same right knee that needed surgery last season and kept him out for most of the campaign. There must be serious concerns now for the 31-year-old’s long-term fitness. O’Shea, 23, has found himself sidelined for very different reasons. Boss Alex Ferguson dropped a bombshell this week when he informed the Republic of Ireland international that new signing Gabriel Heinze would be taking his place at left-back. He was also understood to be one of those targeted by Roy Keane when he claimed some of United’s younger players have shown the wrong attitude.
Neil Custis, The Sun

ManUtd.com brought you this story first on Wednesday morning > >

A United Front
Ruud van Nistelrooy has vowed to be part of the next Manchester United team to win the Champions League after backing Sir Alex Ferguson´s softly-softly approach to rebuilding his creaking empire at Old Trafford. Van Nistelrooy, who has been moitted from United´s tour of the USA because of his run to the Euro 2004 semi-finals with Holland, had been linked with a move away from United this summer to lin up with former team-mate David Beckham at Real Madrid. But the Dutch striker has pledged to play a key at United as Ferguson bids to reclaim the club´s position at the summit of European and domestic football by gradually restructuring his squad. " The manager has unfolded his plans to me. He explained to me what he wants to achieve in the end. We are building a team which can win the Champions League again. I really want to be part of that team."
Peter Edwards, Daily Express

O´Shame
Sir Alex Ferguson has told John O´Shea he must fight for his future at Manchester United after confirming £6.9million signing Gabriel Heinze will start the season as first-choice left-back. O´Shea played most of last season in that position out of necessity, but Ferguson was unconvinced by his performances and plunged into him the transfer market to land Argentina defender Heinze from Paris St Germain. And although O´Shea has travelled on United´s pre-season tour of America despite not having recovered from knee surgery, the 23-year-old faces a season out in the cold at Old Trafford.

We Don´t Need You Beckham, Says Van
Ruud van Nistelrooy last night told David Beckham that Manchester United are not missing him. Old Trafford´s Dutch not-shot insisted United had moved on in the 12 months since the England skipper completed a £25million switch to Real Madrid. Despite tamely conceding the title to Arsenal last term, van Nistelrooy said Sir Alex Ferguson did not need Beckham back. " For United it´s not disastrous if Beckham does not come back here. Bryan Robson left, Eric Cantona left. Other players have filled their boots."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Roo Keeps ´Em Dangling
Wayne Rooney could wait until the end of August before deciding on his future. The Everton strike star has still to reply to the Mersey club’s £12.5million five-year offer made a fortnight ago. Yet until he receives assurances over their current financial crisis — and how they plan to get out of it — the situation is unlikely to change. Rooney’s advisers have requested more details of what exactly is on the table. As it stands, the offer is little more than £50,000 a week with NO further details of how the deal is broken down.
Phil Thomas, The Sun

Move Over You Fuddy-Duddies...It´s Jose´s Time
Frank Lampard believes Jose Mourinho is about to make as big an impact on the Premiership as Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. Lampard said: " I´ve never worked with Wenger or Ferguson but there is a unique style and a feeling that style will be good for us. I have only met the manager for a short time but he´s very organised... The Real Madrids and Manchester Uniteds of this world are the benchmark. They´ve been successful for years and we want to get up there with them."
Darren Lewis, Daily Mirror

And finally...first Vieira´s leaving Arsenal, now Edu ( stop laughing at the back there!).

Arsene Ed-ache
Arsenal were last night plunged into a new midfield crisis when Brazil ace Edu admitted he wants to join Barcelona. The Samba star had been lined up by Highbury boss Arsene Wenger to fill Patrick Vieira’s boots.
Mark Irwin, The Sun

Sir Alex Ferguson says he is " deeply saddened" after hearing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces up to three months out with his recurring knee injury.

The Manchester United striker suffered a setback in his comeback from the injury and could face another operation before he can contemplate a return to first-team action.

And Ferguson admits he is sorry to again be without the 30-year-old Norwegian - a player he describes as a " true professional".

" Hopefully the next two months will end the worry for the lad and that the problem will be cleared up, enabling him to get on with the final years of his career," the Reds manager said.

" It is just unfortunate that a player of that calibre and such a great professional is missing out on the best years of his life.

" It is only in the last two or three years he has become a consistent performer for us. He was always the player we brought off the bench because he was so good at it.

" He was probably the best substitute of all time. He could analyse football by watching it, understood exactly his role when he came on, understood the tactics of the game. He is a rare bird."

Ferguson admits the pressure will be on this season for United to wrestle the title back from Arsenal´s grasp.

He added: " The expectation level at Manchester United is to win the league and we are satisfied with that. It is no problem for us.

" This year because of European Championships and Copa America we have not got all our players with us.

" We´ve picked up two or three injuries in pre-season training which hasn´t helped. But nonetheless by playing in a tournament [the US tour] in this intensity once we get to 11 August we will appreciate this preparation."
