KEANE MAKES TITLE VOW

Roy Keane has warned Premiership champions Arsenal that Manchester United will not make things so easy for them next season.
United finished third in The Premiership last term, a massive 15 points behind The Gunners as Arsene Wenger´s men stormed to the title on an unbelievable unbeaten run.

Keane has called on his team-mates to improve on last season and make a more concerted challenge on the title.

" It is impossible to win the league every year but the disappointing factor for us is that we faded away and didn´t give Arsenal a run for their money," Keane told MUTV.

" I am sure it won´t happen again this year because the memory of that disappointment will spur us on.

" The evidence is that this club bounces back from disappointments and I believe we will do that this year."

Meanwhile, Keane has revealed he has been impressed by two of Sir Alex Ferguson´s summer signings - Liam Miller and Alan Smith.

" Liam is a box-to-box player who knows where the goal is, while Alan is hungry to get success after what happened at Leeds last season," added Keane.

" But like any new player who arrives here, they have to be given time."

Keane´s on title warpath
Roy Keane has warned Arsenal not to expect such an easy romp to the Premiership this term. Keane is demanding more from his troops after Arsenal left United trailing 15 points adrift last time. He said: " It´s impossible to win the league every year but the disappointing factor for us is we faded and didn´t give Arsenal a run for their money. I´m sure that won´t happen this year because the memory of that disappointment will spur us on." Team-mate Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United’s tough pre-season campaign will get them off to a flyer in the Premiership. Wales winger Giggs, 30, said: “It is a hectic start and that is what we want. It is an exciting time but we know we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”
Max Short, The Sun

Keane´s homecoming delights Cork
Manchester United kick off a busy pre-season programme when they fly to the United States on Wednesday, but Roy Keane still found time to make an emotional return to his former club, Cobh Ramblers, on Saturday. A full house of 8,000 saw the Irishman play his first match in 14 years in his native Cork as he led a young United side to a 2-1 win. Keane, who played for a season with the Ramblers before joining Nottingham Forest for £30,000 in 1990, said: " I was delighted to see so many people turn out."

Villa for Butt
Aston Villa boss David O´Leary is ready to snap up Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt on a one-year loan deal. United have agreed to let Butt go out on loan from Old Trafford, where he has slipped out of the first team reckoning and are prepared to pay £10,000 of the player´s £35,000 a week wages. And Villa have emerged as the favourites to give the England international the chance to resurrect his career. O´Leary recently admitted he could be forced to test the loan market and has already borrowed Carlton Cole from Chelsea for a year. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson priced the player out of a permanent move to Newcastle by slapping a £5million price tag on the player.

Fergie United behind kids
Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to blood Manchester United´s next generation on their tour of America. United are due to fly out on Wednesday for a three-game pre-season tour which kicks off with a clash with Bayern Munich on Sunday. And the Old Trafford boss is ready to turn to his latest batch of fledglings. Ferguson said: " Darren Fletcher came through while we were in America last summer and hopefully one or two will do it this year. Jonathan Spector and Phil Bardsley will enjoy it and the experience should push their careers on a bit."
Scott Douglas, Daily Mirror

And now for your daily dose of Roomania...

Roon battle
Everton must decide if the time has come to sell wonderboy Wayne Rooney. The 18-year-old England striker and his advisors have decided he will not commit to a £50,000-a-week, five-year contract. And Everton fear he will run down his existing two-year deal, allowing Rooney to leave on a Bosman free when that runs out. His value will drop each week that the new contract remains unsigned. And Everton will be forced to listen to offers from big-money clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea.

UNITED DUO OUT TO IMPRESS

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will hand two teenage defenders the chance to demonstrate their first team credentials on the club´s pre-season trip to the United States.
The Red Devils jet out to America on Wednesday, with Phil Bardsley and Jonathan Spector presented with the opportunity to impress Ferguson.

Last summer, Ferguson used the tour of the States to blood Darren Fletcher in to his side and the Scotland captain cemented a spot in the first team squad last term.

Ferguson is hoping for a similar outcome from Bardsley and Spector this time around and is keen to assess the duo.

" Darren came through while we were in America last summer and hopefully one or two will do it this year," said Ferguson.

" Jonathan Spector and Phil Bardsley will enjoy it and hopefully it will push their careers on."

Bardsley made two appearances for The Red Devils last season before spending the latter half of the campaign on loan at Royal Antwerp.

American stopper Spector is highly rated at Old Trafford and did make the substitutes´ bench for the Premiership meeting at Blackburn Rovers last term.

With several big names missing from the trip across the Atlantic, it will be the ideal time for the likes of Bardsley and Spector to prove they are worthy of a regular spot in Ferguson´s plans.

Howard Relishing US Return

The prospect of returning to his footballing roots is something that clearly excites Tim Howard.

The American goalkeeper is relishing the chance of meeting up with some familiar faces as United embark on their second consecutive pre-season tour of the States this week.

The Reds face Bayern Munich in Chicago, followed by a stop-off in Philadelphia to play Celtic, before finally taking on AC Milan in New York.

The final leg of the trip will be extra special for Howard as he returns to the ground where he spent five seasons honing his skills with the New York/New Jersey Metrostars.

The Giants’ Stadium holds fond memories for the United goalkeeper but Howard admits he’s glad to have got both his United debut and his first season firmly under his belt.

“Making my debut was a bit nerve-wracking,” says Howard. “It was my first game and under really tough circumstances.

”I definitely wouldn’t want to do it again. It would have been much easier if it was somewhere else and it wasn’t in my home town. Thankfully things worked out well.

“Mentally it [this tour] should be a little bit easier and physically once I’ve had a rest I don’t see a problem. This time there won’t be the madness surrounding it and I’ll know what to expect.”

Last summer’s tour was a overwhelming success and firmly whetted the appetites of an ever-increasing football audience in the States. Howard admits he can’t wait to get going this time round and is confident the fans will once again be out in force to support the team.

“I think you’re always going to have your die-hard soccer fans that will come out and support a tour like this and a club like Manchester United," he explains. " But I think last season’s tour did change the views of some people to an extent. The fact we could actually fill the stadiums and completely sell-out was a point proved in itself.

“I think the games are important to the extent that a club of this magnitude never wants to be on the losing end of things, but at the same time I think we’ll use them to get fit and find our form. We have some very important games coming up very early on in the season such as the Champions League qualifier so, although winning is important, I’d say playing well is the priority.”

Aside from re-uniting him with friends and family, the tour will also provide Howard with a welcome return to some home comforts of his native New York.

" I miss the day to day life," admits the 25-year-old whose mother is regular at the United themed Manhatten bar Nevada Smiths. " I lived there for 24 years so it’s all the little things that you get used to such as the comforts of home, food, friends, stores – it’s just a different culture. That doesn’t mean I haven’t enjoyed this [the English] culture too.

" I’m pretty quiet and laid-back so it’s been easy for me to live in the countryside. How do they compare? Well, the taxis are different colours! No, it’s not too bad. There are more things going on in New York, but Manchester is buzzing every now and again!"

Ryan Giggs sees United´s gruelling pre-season schedule as the perfect springboard for a successful 2004/05 campaign.
The Welsh winger is relishing the Reds´ USA Tour and the subseqent Vodafone Cup following a similar prelude to last season.

Giggs told MUTV: " What happened last season showed the benefit of playing good quality pre-season games, so we are looking forward to getting straight back into it.

" It is a hectic start but that is what we want. It is an exciting time because there are so many challenges in front of us but we know we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season."

Giggs also voiced the squad´s delight at the return of Portuguese coach Carlos Quieroz for a second stint as Sir Alex Ferguson´s right-hand man.

" The lads are glad to see Carlos is back," he said. " He had a successful season here before and took a year off to coach Real Madrid.

" Most of the lads are familiar with him and the way he operates. It is good to have him back."

Saviola linked with Reds switch

MANCHESTER United have found themselves in the transfer frame over speculation linking Javier Saviola with a switch to the Premiership.

Reports in Spain say that an unnamed English club are in talks with Barcelona about a possible move for the Argentine hitman.

And United are firm favourites, according to the Spanish press, to be the club currently targeting the striker.

Although a favourite son of the Nou Camp, Saviola´s bumper £2.5m a year pay packet is proving a burden on the financially troubled giant, and they are looking to either move him on or have him take a pay cut.

The 22-year-old is highly regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe, although whether or not he is a United target or just the subject of paper talk by the Spanish press will remain to be seen.
