Rooney rocked by crisis
Wayne Rooney will quit Everton this summer after the club was plunged into chaos last night. Chief executive Trevor Birch walked out just six weeks into his new job after the Goodison board ignored his plans to drag the Blues out of their crippling cash crisis. England wonderkid Rooney, 18, has not responded to the offer of a new £12.5million five-year contract - a deal he will now refuse. Manchester United are favourites to land the striker, but Chelsea and Real Madrid will turn the race for his signature into the biggest transfer in English football history.

Manchester United have offered Bojan Djordjic a new contract but the winger is unsure whether to sign the deal.
The Sweden Under-21 international has yet to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford and spent a loan spell at Crvena Zvezda last season.

After accruing first team experience, Djordjic has been offered a 12-month deal to stay with The Red Devils.

But the young wide man has also attracted interest from elsewhere and he is uncertain about if he should remain with Sir Alex Ferguson´s side.

" I am surprised and happy but at the same time it is not likely that I will get to play for the first team here and there are also other offers to consider," Djordjic told FotbollDirekt.com.

" I have to think this through carefully and talk to the people close to me.

" I was actually caught off guard when Ferguson made this proposal."

Djordjic is thought to be courted by other Premiership clubs, as well as teams in The Championship, as he mulls over his future.

HEINZE WAITS TO BE GIVEN POSITION

Manchester United´s new recruit Gabriel Heinze is uncertain about which defensive position he will be deployed in by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Heinze moved to Old Trafford from Paris Saint Germain earlier in the summer and will add greater depth to the Red Devils rearguard.

The Argentine international can operate at centre half or left back but he has yet to receive any instructions on his United role.

He is currently on Copa America duty with Argentina and is waiting for a discussion with Ferguson to determine where he will be played.

" There was a quick chat when I signed and Mr Ferguson congratulated me," said Heinze. " But we haven´t discussed anything further.

" We still haven´t spoken about whether I´ll play centre half or full back.

" I have always said that so long as a manager puts his faith in a player he will be able to play in different positions.

" This is an exciting challenge for me. I´m coming to Manchester because I had an offer from one of the best clubs in the world."

Heinze is also confident he will be able to adapt to the hustle and bustle of The Premiership following his compatriot Juan Sebastian Veron´s failure to settle with United, and then Chelsea.

He continued: " I´m coming to Manchester with a lot of desire, a lot of dreams and I´ll work very hard.

" As a player I´m very hard-working, honest and committed.

" I think it´s a very, very tough and competitive league and next season we will be fighting to be in the running for the title.

" I don´t know if I´m hard but a defender has to do things to stop the striker scoring. No more, no less."

Keane gets hero´s reception

Keane remains hugely popular in Cork
Roy Keane was given a hero´s reception in his home town of Cork when he captained a Manchester United reserve team against former club Cobh Ramblers.
The former Republic of Ireland captain played his first game in the city in over a decade in front of an adoring 8,000 capacity crowd.

Keane, who remains hugely popular with the people of Cork, was mobbed at the end of United´s 2-1 win.

A late Kenny Cooper strike handed United a hard-fought victory.

But they were made to fight hard by a Cobh side driven on by the sight of their illustrious opponents.

Mads Timm had given United a first-half lead which was cancelled out by Robert Brosnan four minutes before the break.

Cobh did their best in the second half but, even allowing for Cooper´s last-minute winner, there was no doubt the night belonged to Keane.

GIGGS RARING TO GO

Wing wizard Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United will reap the benefit from a tough pre-season schedule.
The Red Devils were overshadowed last term by Arsene Wenger´s all-conquering Arsenal side, but Giggs feels the team are ready to bounce back - aided by a tough summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson takes his squad to America for a three-game tour this week, while on their return home they will face PSV Eindhoven and Urawa Red Diamonds in the Vodafone Cup.

Ferguson´s men will then lock horns with Chelsea in their Premiership curtain raiser and Giggs believes The Red Devils will be champing at the bit.

" What happened last season showed the benefit of playing good quality pre-season games, so we are looking forward to getting straight back into it," Giggs told MUTV. " It is a hectic start but that is what we want.

" It is an exciting time because there are so many challenges in front of us but we know we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season."

Giggs believes the Old Trafford club will derive benefit from the return of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz who has rejoined the Manchester club following his disappointing spell with Real Madrid.

" The lads are glad to see Carlos is back," he said. " He had a successful season here before and took a year off to coach Real Madrid.

" Most of the lads are familiar with him and the way he operates. It is good to have him back."
