Manchester United have confirmed that Valter di Salvo has joined the coaching staff at Old Trafford.

Di Salvo joins United from Real Madrid, where he worked alongside the Reds No. 2 Carlos Queiroz.

The 40-year-old Italian, who also worked for Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio, has already begun putting the players through their pre-season paces using a range of hi-tech methods to measure fitness.

He is considered to be one of the most innovative and daring fitness coaches in Europe and is expected to introduce United’s stars to the world of personal computerised fitness programmes.

Reds are Gunnar do better
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that last season was unacceptable for Manchester United - but warned they are hungry to win back the Premiership crown. Solskjaer said United let their standards drop last season when they finished 15 points behind champions Arsenal in a distant third place. The striker said seeing the Gunners take the Premiership trophy from them really hurt and he believes that pain will drive United on this season. " Third place may be a decent place for most teams but it is not good enough for a great team like Manchester United," said Solskjaer. " Not even winning the FA Cup could make up for the fact that Arsenal and Chelsea both finished in front of us in the table. The players are very hungry to win back the title. It really wounded us when Arsenal won the Premiership."
David Anderson, Daily Mirror

Fergie sees Valter work
Manchester United unveiled their new big-name signing yesterday - Real Madrid’s fitness coach Valter di Salvo. He is the man blamed by England captain David Beckham for his lacklustre Euro 2004. But United boss Alex Ferguson jumped at the chance to pinch him from the Spanish giants on the advice of Carlos Queiroz - who returned to Old Trafford as No 2 after being axed by Real. One of Di Salvo’s first tasks will be to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 31, return to full fitness. Striker Solskjaer, out most of last season with a knee injury, said: “I want to play an important role and it’s up to me to get in good shape.”
Staff reporter, The Sun

Ole: I´ll repay Fergie
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits that he owes Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt following his injury hell last season. Solskjaer is desperate to reclaim his place in the Manchester United starting line-up after a career-threatening knee injury ruined last season for him. And he has vowed to repay Ferguson by rediscovering the form that saw him oust David Beckham from Fergie´s plans. " It meant a lot to me that Sir Alex showed me trust and gave me time to come back," said Solskjaer. " I want to play an important role for United this season and it´s up to me to get in good shape."
Mark Ogden, Daily Star

Lynch Completes Sunderland Switch

Manchester United defender Mark Lynch has joined Sunderland on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old right back sealed the switch to the Stadium of Light, citing a necessity for first team football as his reason for leaving Old Trafford.

" It´s always a wrench to leave a club like United," Lynch told Sunderland´s website, " but I thought the time was right and the gaffer [Sir Alex Ferguson] said it was okay for me to move on."

Lynch made his United debut and only appearance for the club in the Champions League against Deportivo in March 2003, becoming Mick McCarthy´s sixth summer signing.

" There was other interest but I wanted to sign for Sunderland," Lynch continues. " It´s a great club and as soon as I spoke to Mick McCarthy I was impressed.

" I´ve been at United since the age of 11. I want first team football and I decided that the time was right to leave. I would not have come here if I didn´t think I could get into the first team."

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy added: " Mark is another young player with huge potential. He has experience of being around top players and has played at the highest level, having been involved in European games with Manchester United.

" He´s a player who has the ability to challenge for a first team spot and he will be linking up with our other young and exciting players."
