Manchester United have confirmed that Valter di Salvo has joined the coaching staff at Old Trafford.
Di Salvo joins United from Real Madrid, where he worked alongside the Reds No. 2 Carlos Queiroz.
The 40-year-old Italian, who also worked for Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio, has already begun putting the players through their pre-season paces using a range of hi-tech methods to measure fitness.
He is considered to be one of the most innovative and daring fitness coaches in Europe and is expected to introduce United’s stars to the world of personal computerised fitness programmes.

Brown: Injury Comeback Proved Tough Test
Wes Brown admits the timing of his return from injury " wasn´t right" when he came in to replace the suspended Rio Ferdinand in January.
Brown, who had just recovered from an eight-month injury lay-off following knee surgery in May 2003, was thrust back into first team football with the charge of maintaining the record of the Premiership´s meanest defence.
It was a catch-22 situation for the 25-year-old defender, however; delighted to be back in the side, but aware that, as the title race began to gather momentum, his match sharpness was some way below the required level.
" The Gaffer put me back in and he believed I could still do it so I was really happy about that, but as it turned out the timing wasn´t exactly right for me," Wes told the summer Season Review Issue of United magazine.
" I knew I wasn´t 100 per cent, but all I could do was keep trying and working because the only way I was going to get fitter was by playing games."
A period of adjustment was inevitable for the recovering Manchester-born defender, and it took a mental strength acquired from two previous career-threatening injuries.
" I just kept on going and stayed focused and made sure I didn´t listen to everything that was being said about me. I had to hope that my game would improve the fitter I got."
The criticism levelled at Brown was in stark contrast to the preceding years of his United career, where praise was lavished upon him, most notably the manager ascribing the tag: " the best natural defender this club has had for years and years".
" When a young player comes through at United," Brown explains, " praise gets poured on you. It happens, that´s the way it works... But my injuries have always stopped me from achieving something. It´s always halted my progress for six months, eight months at a time.
" But you just have to keep your head up and believe in yourself and keep working. When I first came back I wasn´t happy with my form at all. I knew I was better than that, but, like I said, sometimes the timing isn´t quite right."
Brown´s performances did come good; a rock solid display against Arsenal at Highbury in the 1-1 League draw was just reward for his hard work and even led to calls for Brown to be included in England´s Euro 2004 squad. A summer of rest was seen as more beneficial.
And Brown says his motivation to get back to his best is a result of his love of the game and baby daughter Halle, now 18 months old.
" I want to do everything I can to win a game. I love football; I wouldn´t be there playing if I didn´t love it so much. I don´t think you lose that desire and will to win, it´s just that when you have been out so long your body has to catch up with what your mind is thinking.
" And during the time when I was getting a lot of criticism and the team wasn´t doing so well I think it would have been much harder for me if I was just sat at home on my own.
" But when you´ve got a beautiful daughter there to take care of, you don´t even think about it. Everyone who´s had a kid knows that it´s hard work, but it´s great - I really enjoy it."
With a summer´s rest, Brown will be able to have a clean run at a new season and, hopefully, a clean bill of health.
lol
Johnson joins Sky Blues
United starlet Eddie Johnson has joined Coventry City on a season´s loan.
The 19-year-old striker becomes the second youngster to join Coventry from the Reds in the last month, although Neil Wood signed a permanent deal with the Sky Blues.
Johnson clocked up his only appearance for the Reds in the Carling Cup against Tottenham last season and is relishing the chance to help Coventry in their promotion push while gaining useful experience in Division One.
" I’m definitely looking forward to it," he told Coventry City´s official website.
" I think it will be good for me to get the experience and I’m going to class myself as a Coventry player for the season. My main aim is obviously to do well for myself but I want to do the best for Coventry as well and hopefully get them promoted or at least to the play-offs."
And depite the number of players standing in Johnson´s path to United´s first team, he revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson still sees him as one for the future.
" The gaffer thought it would be a good idea for me to come and get some experience," he added.
" I spoke to him at the end of last season when I came back from Antwerp and he still sees me in his plans but with the strikers they’ve got – Alan Smith, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha –it’s difficult to slot in there.
" I’ve come here to gain my own experience, hopefully do well and take it back to United next year."

BROWN WANTS TO BE FERGIE´S ROCK
Manchester United defender Wes Brown is determined to establish himself as a first-team regular this term after overcoming his latest injury setback.
The stopper, 24, suffered yet another serious injury last term, forcing the second cruciate knee ligament operation of his career.
He struggled to find his best form after returning to the United first team last February, but finished the season strongly and was even mentioned as a possible for England´s Euro 2004 squad.
With the suspended Rio Ferdinand not available until September 20, and United´s latest defensive recruit Gabriel Heinze set to play for Argentina at the Olympics, Brown looks certain to start the forthcoming campaign as first choice, and is determined to clinch an extended run in Sir Alex Ferguson´s side.
" My injuries have always stopped me achieving something," he stated.
" It´s always halted my progress for six or eight months at a time. But you just have to keep your head up and believe in yourself and keep working.
" I love football. I wouldn´t be there playing if I didn´t love it so much.
I don´t think you lose that desire and will to win, it´s just that when you have been out so long your body has to catch up with what your mind is thinking."
GILL: FERGIE DECIDES WHO LEAVES
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has reiterated that no player will be allowed to leave Old Trafford without the blessing of boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
With talk of a bid for Everton starlet Wayne Rooney mounting, there has been suggestions that Ferguson´s first-team squad would be pruned to free finances.
The futures of Nicky Butt, Kleberson, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and David Bellion have all been subject to scrutiny this summer.
However, Gill has now confirmed that transfers are solely the domain of Ferguson.
´´Sir Alex Ferguson and his scouts identify the players and then it is a matter of saying what is the best use of our funds,´´ Gill told MUTV.
´´Unlike some other clubs, we do not have a limitless budget.
´´We have a limit on our funds as any sensible business has.
´´It´s a balancing act but ultimately no player comes or leaves without the manager´s approval.´´
