Banks Praises Commanding Howard

Tim Howard has already won many plaudits during his short career at United, but none will mean more to him than those from his childhood hero Gordon Banks.

The goalkeeping legend has been hugely impressed by Howard’s performances in his first season at Old Trafford and pinpoints the American´s authoritive nature as one of his biggest strengths.

“I was very impressed by Tim last season," Banks told the official United Magazine. “He has shown himself to be athletic and very agile and his distribution of the ball is particularly good.

”Most of all, though, I have been impressed with the way he commands his area. I always thought that that was one of the strongest parts of my game and he has displayed the same kind of authority in the penalty box."

Banks believes modern day technology has put Howard and his fellow goalkeeping colleagues under much more pressure than he faced during his playing days. However, he has great faith in United´s No. 1 and believes his best years are still ahead of him.

”It is very difficult now for goalkeepers as the balls they use fly all over the place," insists the World Cup winner. " Even though the keepers use latex gloves now, which do help you grip the ball, I would say that being a keeper is more difficult than when I was playing.

”He is only 25-years-old and I know that I didn’t peak as a keeper until I was about 29. Providing he plays regularly at United, and there’s no reason why he won’t, I expect him to get even better.

”Keepers mature later than outfield players and the experience he should gain in the next few years will be invaluable to him."

Auxerre : Roux ne veut pas lâcher Mexès

Dans un entretien accordé à l’Est-Républicain, l’entraîneur auxerrois Guy Roux a réaffirmé son intention de conserver Philippe Mexès qui entend, lui, rejoindre l’AS Roma.

Philippe Mexès, qui s’est mis d’accord avec la Roma, n’a pas rejoint l’AJ Auxerre en stage.Mais Guy Roux, lui, ne veut toujours pas entendre parler de son départ : « Mexès, il appartient toujours à Auxerre puisque son contrat court sur encore deux saisons. - C´est tout le système régissant actuellement les transferts qui pourrait être mis à mal par ce genre de pratiques. Alors oui, on défendra les intérêts du club comme nous l´avons d´ailleurs toujours fait » a confié l’entraîneur bourguignon à nos confrères de l’Est-Républicain.

C abusé de ne pas le laisser partir.

Mais dans un autre sens Auxerre en aura besoin cette saison avec tous les departs.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has urged fans to be patient, saying there is more to come from some of their under-fire stars.

Gill has told supporters to expect more from some of last season´s signings once the new campaign begins, with the likes of Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and David Bellion enduring below-par debut campaigns at Old Trafford.

Gill reacted to a claim that Sir Alex Ferguson " bought a fleet of Fiestas instead of landing a Ferrari" by saying: " I don´t think anyone could class Tim Howard or Ronaldo as Fiestas unless I am watching a different game of football to them.

" As for the other players, you´ve just got to give them time. Young players like Kleberson can take a while to settle in.

" Look at another Brazilian, Edu, for example. For his first three years at Arsenal, Edu played second fiddle to Gilberto Silva but last season everyone was raving about him. We bring in players on four or five year contracts so let´s view them in the medium term, not after one season."

Gill has used United´s official website to handle fans questions but gave few clues when asked: " Will you be buying a Ferrari this summer?"

The United chief told the official line telling supporters: " We do have to operate within budgets. Unlike some clubs, we´re not in the category of having unlimited funds. We do have a limit on our funds like any sensible business has. That´s a balancing act. I discuss Sir Alex´s targets with him and prioritise them."
