The Boss: Future´s Bright

We´ve got to look abroad for players. In the 50´s Real Madrid were the best club side in the world and they were filled with players from all over. They had Di Stefano who was South American, Copa of France, Santamaria who was also South American, Didi from Brazil. They did it in the 50´s and when I see the great Brazilian players coming through and playing for Ajax or in Italy, I say why don´t we get them first.

Real Madrid´s Ronaldo went to PSV Eindhoven when he was only a teenager, and that´s the kind of area in which a club like Manchester United can´t be left behind. Arsene Wenger´s been doing it with French and Swiss players and we´ve got to be in front of them.

The 90-Minute Radius Rule
I think that is one of the worst rules I´ve ever heard of. Kids aren´t even being paid and they´re not even allowed to go to the club they want to. I think it´s a disgrace. It was done to spread the talent around. I was one of the Busby Babes, and you had to leave school back then to join, but kids now are being coached and trained in better environments. But back then Manchester United were the top team in the North, Wolves were in the Midlands and Chelsea down South. In our day we helped English football by getting them together.

Of all the players that came through together as the Busby Babes, so many of them would have played for England for many, many years. Duncan Edwards, Eddie Coleman, David Pegg and all these other young players were coming through and it was a tremendous squad of players all at one club. There was nothing wrong with that and I think it helped the country. What´s wrong, I think, is that it´s pushing players. What it´s doing is saying that if you´re in Manchester you can only play for Manchester.

But the 90-minute rule and all this jazz is a step over the top. It doesn´t help English football. Look at the squad of United. We´ve got a lot locally. There´s nothing wrong with good players all going to one club. That´s what the FA are trying to stop. I believe Howard Wilkinson came up with idea. It does annoy me and it´s totally wrong.

FA Self-Harm

I think it harms England. Look at the goalkeepers they don´t have! We used to have great keepers at one time. They should get to where the best clubs are. Since Matt Busby´s time, Manchester United have been known as a team that looks for good youngsters, wherever they´re from. Let them come from wherever. It´s not that that´s stopping them coming through, it´s not letting them play together.

Kids Will Learn The United Way

There are so many former players around on the staff, in hospitality rooms or on MUTV that the history of the club is there for these newcomers to see. Wherever they go, they see the people who´ve helped build something at Manchester United. They realise it´s a proud club with tradition and that they´ve got to play and behave in a certain way. All this has got to be for Manchester United and that´s how they´re being taught.

It´s happened all through time. In the old days they used to say that from the laundry women right the way through the club the people loved Manchester United. We always had great characters at the club - Jimmy Murphy, Eric Harrison who did a tremendous job. We´ve got great people at the club now and they´ll get them through. They know the traditions and what´s happened at the club. They know all about the Munich air crash, winning trophies and the never-say-die attitude at the club.

Not Many Foreigners In The Fifties!

The only foreigners here when I was in the youth team were from Ireland! We were very lucky in 1954 as we went on United´s first European tour. We celebrated it this year at the Blue Stars tournament in Zurich. We won it then and we won it this year as well which was great, I was lucky enought to go with them. I think we didn´t have many foreign players but there´s nothing wrong with that.

Now, we´ve still got great homegrown ones coming through - we´ve three terrific goalkeepers in Luke Steele, Tom Heaton and Tommy Lee. We have Lee Martin, David Jones, Richard Jones, Ryan Shawcross, Jonathon Evans and others who are good players with bright futures. Of course there´s Jonathon Spector from America and he´s showing a lot of promise. I´m sure he´ll find a place. I think the future´s great.

Ola And Ciao To Pique And Rossi

The two new lads Guiseppe Rossi and Gerard Pique are great scoops. I met Guiseppe Rossi the other day. He looks bright. He´s supposed to be very quick and I´ve heard good reports about him. Guiseppe Rossi, it should be Paolo Rossi I think! It seems a good signing and we are spreading our wings again which is good, it´s as it should be.

I´ve heard Pique´s a tremendous defender. I think it´s great we go for these players and get them here. Then you´ve got the chance of telling them about the history of Manchester United and that there´s something they can be proud to be associated with.

The United chief executive tackles your questions on transfers in the first part of our exclusive interview.

The club have repeatedly denied that Ruud van Nistelrooy is not leaving the club, yet still the rumours persist. What more can the club do to end these rumours about Ruud´s future? ( Andrea Barton, UK)
“We can’t do any more. Ruud has been very clear on it through the media, as have Sir Alex and the club. Ruud is an integral part of our planning for the next four years, as per the new contract he signed. That is the situation but we have to get on with it. And the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.”

Do you regret not signing Ronaldinho last summer after seeing his performances for Barcelona? And if a player of similar ability became available this summer, would the club go all out to get him? ( Matt Jackson, Sale)
“You have to say he had a great second half of the season at Barcelona when they stormed up the Spanish league. Do you regret? No, you’ve got to move on and make sure we deliver and build a team that can challenge at the top in European football. If another player like Ronaldinho came along we would have to assess it. We would have to look at it with the manager, look at our budget and determine whether the squad needed strengthening to ensure that we can get back to the top of European football. Sir Alex is always looking for the player who’ll make the difference at Manchester United. That´s something he has been excellent at over the years.”

There has been some criticism of Peter Kenyon for the Ronaldinho deal falling through. What would you say about that? ( Tom Gadsby, UK)
“I personally don’t agree with that. Peter worked very hard and I was assisting him in certain areas but it wasn’t meant to be. You get a feeling with certain players that they’re desperate to come to you. With others, you sense they’re not and that they’re using you in terms of the wider negotiations. Ronaldinho probably fell into the latter category. I think he probably had his mind set on going to Spain and that was the situation. I personally don’t think the club or the board could have done more to get him. We basically met his wage demands and we made a very, very significant offer to PSG. They chose not to take it and went for a deal with Barcelona instead. Personally I think that criticism of Peter is unwarranted.”
Do you look forward to the summer and the transfer activity that comes with it? Or does the intense media interest in transfers make it a difficult period for you? ( Neil Atkins, Wolverhampton)
“I look forward to the challenge. There’s always a buzz, a sense of excitement, and a sense of real pride, I suppose, if you bring in a top player that can hopefully really add to our team. Every deal is different. Some go smoothly whereas others are perhaps more problematic. What we have to do is identify our key targets, keep them to ourselves and then go after them. The media frenzy will have us linked with many more players than we are actually after. I know ManUtd.com track the numerous players we are linked with in the papers and it’s always a long list!"

A lot of United fans believe the club bought a fleet of Fiestas instead of a Ferrari last summer. Will United be buying a Ferrari this summer? Jason ( Salford)
“I don’t think anyone could class Tim Howard or Ronaldo as Fiestas unless I am watching a different game of football to them! As for the other players, you’ve just got to give them time. Young players like Kleberson can take a while to settle in. Look at another Brazilian, Edu, for example. For his first three years at Arsenal, Edu played second fiddle to Gilberto Silva but last season everyone was raving about him. We bring in players on four or five year contracts so let’s view them in the medium term, not after one season."

How much of a say does the Board have in the players that Sir Alex signs? ( Calvin Kuek, USA)
”We have a discussion. Sir Alex will identify the key targets with his knowledge and his scouting reports. There may be two or three for a particular position. Then it is a matter of deciding what the best use of our funds is. We do have to operate within budgets. Unlike some clubs, we’re not in the category of having unlimited funds. We do have a limit on our funds like any sensible business has. That’s a balancing act. I discuss Sir Alex’s targets with him and prioritise them. We ( the Board) have a say but ultimately no player comes to Manchester United or leaves Manchester United without the manager’s approval which is entirely appropriate.”

With the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid spending hundreds of millions on players, how difficult is it not to lose sight of bringing young players through the ranks? ( Mike Green, Eccles)
”Manchester United, over the years, has always been a club with the ability to spend large amounts of money in the transfer market, on players like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rio Ferdinand. But we also have a tradition for bringing young players through. We’ve seen that this year with Darren Fletcher coming through. So it’s a combination. We do have the power and the financial muscle to compete effectively in the transfer market but let’s be honest, if we’re up against Chelsea and they desperately want a player, they will probably outbid us. But they can’t get every player. In a straight fight with them, we may lose out. That’s why our ( scouting) network needs to be good so we can identify the other player. If they ( Chelsea) have got their number one priority, we can go for the other guy."

Roy Keane has been quoted as saying that the overall package at Manchester United is better than the rest. Would you agree? ( Michelle O´Riordan, Cork)
”Well, I don’t know all the details of the other clubs but Roy’s clearly happy with his package. Thank you for that, Roy – I’ll remember that next time you’re in for a renegotiation! But yes, we are one of the top payers in English football, if not European football. We make sure we compete effectively for players. You only have to read the papers to get a sense of what players earn – not that you should believe everything you read in the papers! Players are quite rightly very well renumerated for their services.”

United pass on Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson has shelved plans to buy Wayne Rooney this summer. Ferguson has not approached the Manchester United board about mounting a bid for the 18-year-old England and Everton striker according to club director Bobby Charlton. He said: " He´s not out player. We´ve made statements already about Wayne Rooney. We haven;t got the money for all these players. The financial discipline of the club is very important. Rooney is a great player but I think he is happy at Everton and I cannot see any reason why he shouldn´t stay there."
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Mourinho-ho-ho
Arsene Wengers last night warned Arsenal that they are being left behind by Chelsea´s spending power. His concerns have been echoed at Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson. Now David Gill, the chief executive of Manchester United, has admitted that in a straight fight for a player, Chelsea would win every time if cash is the only criteria. United´s Gill admitted yesterday that his team boss Ferguson cannot compete with the spending power behind Mourinho. Gill said: " Manchester United over the years has always been a club with the ability to spend large amounts of money in the transfer market, on players like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rio Ferdinand. We do have the power and the financial muscle to compete effectively in the transfer market. But let us be honest, if we are up against Chelsea and they desperately want a player, they will probably outbid us."
John Cross, Daily Mirror

Butt next in Boro frenzy
Middlesbrough continued their transfer frenzy yesterday by landing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - and now they have Nicky Butt in their sights. " I´m pretty sure Jimmy will not be the last signing we make this summer," said chief executive Keith Lamb. " I expect at least two more new faces next week."

MILLER EAGER TO MAKE IMPRESSION

Manchester United new boy Liam Miller admits he can hardly wait to get started at his new club after arriving at Old Trafford from Celtic.
Miller is a self-confessed United supporter and the 22-year-old Irishman is keen to make an earlier impression at the Premiership giants.

´´Playing for United is going to be great for me,´´ declared Miller.

´´I have supported the club since I was a boy. It´s going to be so exciting here.´´

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Miller has the potential to be an eventual successor to Roy Keane - a role the starlet could also fill for his national side.

Miller is already acquainted with John O´Shea and Keane, which should help him settle in his move to England.

´´It was nice to meet Roy and I already know John from the youth squads,´´ continued Miller.

´´It´s good to come to United knowing some people but I can´t wait to meet the other players.

´´They are world-class players who I can learn from. I´m hopeful that I will.´´

Juventus : Gros forcing pour Gilardino ( Parme)
10 juillet 2004 - 14 h 01 -
