Il se console en s´envolant pour disputer l´Euro dans son pays. Le joueur de Manchester United a livré des matchs de hauts niveaux tout au long du tournoi mais il n´a rien pu faire pour éviter la défaite en finale. Rentré à la mi-temps lors du premier match contre la Grèce, c´est lui qui commet la faute pour le penalty transformé par Basinas. Ses dribbles sont imprévisibles et ses accélérations foudroyantes mais il pêche parfois par excès d´individualisme. Au Portugal, on ne parle plus que de lui. Il est devenu la nouvelle idole des jeunes. La gente féminine est tombée amoureuse de sa gueule d´ange et son physique d´apollon ( 1,84 m, 75 kg). Malheureusement, le Portugal devant son public perd en finale face à la Grèce qui remporte l´Euro ( 1-0). On gardera de cette finale les larmes d´un gamin de 19 ans très déçu de n´avoir pas pu remporter le premier tournoi majeur du Portugal. Mais C. Ronaldo possède un talent tel qu´il arrivera dans les prochaines années à redonner le sourire à tout un peuple.

Puissant, rapide, adroit et doté d´une redoutable frappe de balle, Rooney a fait oublier Owen dans le coeur des supporters anglais. Lui qui a marqué 15 buts en 67 matchs de Premier League vient de refuser une prolongation de son contrat. Everton vient de lui proposer un nouveau contrat de cinq ans avec le plus gros salaire jamais vu dans le club pour le garder. Quand on pense qu´il a failli ne jamais devenir football professionnel ! «J´avais l´impression de rater beaucoup de choses, parce que je ne pouvais pas passer du temps avec mes amis et avoir les mêmes activités qu´eux» , a déclaré Rooney dans le Sun. On attend désormais la confirmation de son talent dans les compétitions à venir.

MANCHESTER United will sit tight and wait for the fallout from Wayne Rooney´s contract answer to Everton.

The Goodison club have placed a lucrative carrot in front of their coveted England star to the tune of £13m over a five-year period.

It´s the Merseysiders´ biggest-ever contract offer to a player and the 18-year-old and his agent Paul Stretford will speak to the club within the next seven days and declare their intent.

Rooney has two years left on his current deal and Everton know that if he refuses their £50,000-a-week wage offer their hopes of a transfer £40-50m windfall will fade rapidly.

That will play into the hands of his suitors at Old Trafford, who have already ruled out blasting away United´s transfer record to land the four-goal Euro 2004 hit.

United can´t afford to budge on their stance and only a package that involved an initial downpayment of £15m is likely to be in line with the funds the Reds could muster, having spent £27m on players in 2004 already.

Priority

United maintain their priority for the rest of the summer is to off-load players from their wage bill, having brought in Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze.

But the Reds still appear to be in the box seat with Rooney said to prefer a move down the East Lancs rather than to Chelsea or Real Madrid. Should dyed-in-the-wool Evertonian Rooney knock back his idol´s best pay deal, the financially troubled Goodison club will realise their biggest asset´s stock is probably at its highest and may be prepared to listen to a transfer fee package from United.

If Rooney decides to say no to Everton´s attempts to get him to stay, then the player may have to consider putting in a transfer request.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has understandably kept tight-lipped. But the Reds´ dressing room was buzzing last season after Rooney´s performance at Old Trafford and Fergie´s England contingent will return to Carrington later this month with glowing testimonials for their performances during Euro 2004

FA rule forces Reds to recruit from abroad

MANCHESTER United´s Academy is evolving into a multi-national foundation for the Reds´ future.

Sixteen-year-old striker Guiseppe Rossi, who signed from from Italy´s Serie A outfit Parma for a nominal compensation fee ( as reported in the later editions of yesterday´s M.E.N. Sport), is the latest prospect to join the Reds following the arrival of 17-year-old Barcelona defender Gerard Pique last week.

The FA´s 90-minute rule, which stops clubs from signing young players from outside that travelling radius from the club but not from abroad, means that local prospects are now finding foreign imports alongside them in the Academy dressing-rooms.

The Old Trafford youth system that brought through Mancunians like Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Wes Brown from Salford, Gorton and Longsight now has an international flavour.

And Academy director Les Kershaw believes the FA are forcing clubs to look elsewhere to keep up with Europe´s best from Serie A, La Liga and the Bundesliga.

" It is easier to sign a foreign youngster these days than it is to sign a British kid," says Kershaw. " It is easier to get a lad from Barcelona than it is from Birmingham. There is something wrong with the system.

Difference

" There is a difference between England and the rest of the world.

" FIFA set up rules with regards to a boy who is out of contract. If we sign an Italian or Spanish boy, for instance, there is only a certain one-off payment. There is nothing else to pay for him. But with an English boy you have no clue whatsoever of the price on his head. You then have to go to tribunals and there are down-payments, then more money when certain appearances are made etc. You haven´t a clue what you are going to finish up paying.

" There are eight-year-old kids in England with price tags on their heads! And if we want them we have to pay compensation.

" The scenario is simple. Unless kids are based within a 90-mile driving distance from Manchester then we have no chance of getting one from England.

" If the rules now were the same years ago it would have been near impossible to have got David Beckham to Manchester United.

" At this club we have stuck with the British kids longer than most, but going abroad is the cheaper option.

" When Ryan Giggs and the rest of those kids came through it was an English First Division. It was an English game. In fact, you were victimised if you had foreigners in the side. But it is very much a European game now. If we want to compete with the Real Madrids and Inter Milans etc then we have to do this."

But Smith, of the SFX group, believes Everton are unlikely to win the battle to keep the Barclays Premiership´s hottest property.

Surprised

" I´d be very surprised if Everton end up keeping him," said Smith.

" I think they´ve done a very good job trying," Smith added on Radio 5 Live.

Smith believes that if Everton can bring in more than £20million for the 18-year-old and add to squad with player exchanges being part of the Rooney deal they will be forced to accept his departure.

With Everton reported to be £40million in debt Moyes may find his hand being forced by the Everton board.

" Maybe if two or three other players become part of that transaction I think it would serve them well," added Smith.
