" United to wait for Rooney" ( 02/07/03)

By Sam Wallace

The immediate future of Wayne Rooney looks set to be decided by Manchester United´s lack of available funds which will prevent them making a move for the teenager this summer.

Their interest in Everton´s England striker remains strong but United feel confident that signing him will still be an option in a year´s time.

United have invested £45 million in ground improvements that have increased their stadium capacity to around 75,000.

After spending £7.05 million on Leeds striker Alan Smith and another £6 million on the Argentina international Gabriel Heinze, the club have already stretched themselves in the transfer market.

The United board will also have to take into consideration next year´s reduction in revenue from the new Premier League television deal that starts this season and involves changes in the way the TV money is distributed.

United will also earn less from the Champions League after finishing third in last season´s Premiership.

While Sir Alex Ferguson´s interest in the 18-year-old remains strong, there are doubts at United over the assertion of Everton vice-chairman Bill Kenwright that he would accept only £50 million for the player.

United feel the Merseyside club may have placed themselves in a difficult position if they have to accept less.

The prospect of putting together a Rooney deal that could exceed Rio Ferdinand´s £30 million move from Leeds two years ago - with a personal package for the player on top of that - is one that United feel would cause City shareholders to baulk.

David Gill, the club´s chief executive, has already built a reputation as a shrewd transfer dealer and the club do not want to be perceived as being forced into paying a huge fee simply because of Rooney´s performances at Euro 2004.

In the meantime, United have secured the signing of Barcelona´s 17-year-old defender Gerard Pique for a nominal sum.

The teenager had not signed a professional contract with the Catalan club and the compensation to be paid by United, which will be decided by FIFA, is unlikely to top £100,000.

The grandson of a former Barcelona club president, Pique played for Spain in the recent Under-17 European Championship.

United have beaten off competition from Premiership rivals Arsenal and Chelsea to sign him.

Ferguson previously missed out on Cesc Fabregas, another Barcelona youth player, who opted to move to Highbury last year.

:d) Nouvelle évolution aujourd´hui, aprés le refus de Rooney de prolonger Everton voudrait le vendre lorsque sa côte est au plus haut, on verra ce que ça donne...

MANCHESTER United could swoop Stateside again and plunder Tim Howard´s old club New Jersey/New York MetroStars for highly rated teenage midfielder Eddie Gaven.

The 17-year-old is earning rave reviews in America for his performances in Major League Soccer and the Reds have been put on alert.

Gaven is a six foot creative and ball winning athletic midfielder with the engine to get box-to-box and can score goals as well.

The player, who´ll be 18 in October, was born in Hamilton, New Jersey close to Howard´s own roots and he became the second youngest player to sign a contract with the MLS last year and the youngest in MetroStars history to make his debut last June against Chicago at the age of 16 years, 232 days.

This season, Gaven has played in all 13 of MetroStars´ Easter Conference league matches and has helped his side to the top of the table.

Impact

United´s departure into the American transfer market both for young and senior players is proving a successful route for the Reds.

Howard´s impact since arriving at Old Trafford 12 months ago for £2.5m has been phenomenal and brought forward the end of Fabien Barthez´s days at United.

Another senior `keeper, Ricardo, also had to seek regular football on a long term loan to Racing Santander in Spain because of Howard´s stunning success.

The American, no doubt, will have kept manager Sir Alex Ferguson up to date on Gaven´s success.

The `keeper has been back in the States this summer on international duty and will also probably have taken in one or two of the MetroStars matches.

Gaven, who scored twice in a 3-0 win in Los Angeles last week, would bolster United´s young ranks of Americans which has seen the arrival and impact of defender Jonathan Spector from Chicago Sockers and striker Kenny Cooper from Solar SC in Dallas in the academy and reserve sides.

Ron threat hits Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson flies to Lisbon today hoping to secure the services of his Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo for the start of the season. Manchester United ace Ronaldo plays the biggest match of his life tomorrow in the Euro 2004 final against Greece. And the Portuguese want the 19-year-old to be in their team for the Olympics in Athens next month. If they insist, United will be powerless to stop him – and the winger could miss the first SIX matches of the season.
Bill Thornton, Daily Star

Barce unhappy with Reds
Manchester United were last night at the centre of a FIFA probe after Barcelona accused them of trying to nab Gerard Pique on the cheap. Barca are furious they have not received a penny in compensation and are demanding up to £3million for the centre-back, 17, who has agreed a five-year deal at Old Trafford. The Spaniards insist they are entitled to the sum as Pique has been at the club for seven years. And furious Barca president Joan Laporta revealed he had alerted FIFA about United’s handling of the affair. He claimed: “United have acted in a belligerent manner and failed to respect the effort some clubs make in bringing on young players.” Pique said: “Barca say I belong to them but I’m not a slave.”

BIG TWO ´CAN´T AFFORD´ ROONEY

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger does not believe he has the financial muscle to compete for the signature of Wayne Rooney, a comment echoed by Manchester United.
Everton striker Rooney lit up Euro 2004 with some dazzling displays for England, leading to speculation that he could be lured away from Goodison Park.

Wenger has admitted he would love to see Rooney performing in the same team as Thierry Henry, but feels the youngster is beyond his reach.

" I dream at night of bringing him to Arsenal, but that´s all it is, a fantasy," Wenger told The People. " We cannot compete with the money he would cost so I just have to accept he is out of our reach.

" I think Rooney will be a United player next season. They know they have to act because Chelsea will do something big and they cannot afford to be left behind.

" I cannot remember seeing anything like it before. I knew he was very good but I didn´t think it was possible someone so young could dominate so much. You have to say he is amazing."

Despite Wenger feeling the teenager will end up at Old Trafford, Red Devils chief executive David Gill believes Rooney is beyond their reach and feels wily Scot Sir Alex Ferguson has already completed his summer spending.

" We can´t afford to spend £45 million or £50 million on one player," Gill told Daily Star on Sunday. " One reason why we run a tight ship is because we work within financial parameters."

04/07 11:38 - Foot, Transferts
Rooney n’ira pas à Man Utd

Rooney can lead Red revolution
Stuart Mathieson

WAYNE Rooney can become head boy in Sir Alex Ferguson´s latest, imported version of Manchester United´s top class.

The Reds´ boss is bolstering Old Trafford´s youth system and senior squad with teenage and early 20s captures, in readiness for the eventual full break up of the local spine of his squad.

And Rooney, the hit of England´s Euro 2004 campaign, is set to be the jewel in the crown.

Ferguson will be officially back at his Carrington desk on Monday when he returns from Portugal, ready to forge ahead with restructuring.

In the early 90s, Fergie´s blueprint for the Reds was underpinned by home-grown products Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, with Londoner David Beckham joining them.

Beckham´s departure last summer began the erosion of the so-called Class of `92 and Nicky Butt is expected to move to Newcastle next week.

By the middle of next season, Giggs, Scholes and Neville will all be in their 30s.

Importing young prospects from abroad is an easier and cheaper route than securing English talent, so the Reds have been busy scouting on the continent.

Fergie has already landed 17-year-old defender Gerard Pique from Barcelona, and he will now turn his attention to snapping up a 17-year-old Italian forward from a Serie A club.

The club are also believed to be tracking 22-year-old left winger Morten Gamst Pedersen of Tromso and 17-year-old American midfielder Eddie Gaven from Tim Howard´s old club, New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

Targets

Fergie´s two pre-Euro 2004 targets were landed last month in the form of £6.9m, 26-year-old Gabriel Heinze from Paris St Germain, who´ll strengthen the mid-age range of his senior squad, and 23-year-old, £7m striker Alan Smith from Leeds, who joins last summer´s outfield buys Kleberson and Eric Djemba Djemba and newly established regulars John O´Shea ( 23) and Darren Fletcher ( 20).

The biggest success story from 12 months ago has been 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.

Purchased for £12m from Sporting Lisbon, he is now regarded as a bargain considering the price that would be on his head following his huge impact on Euro 2004.

But while United got in early on Ronaldo before his fee escalated, they haven´t been so lucky with England´s sensation Rooney.

His four-goals in Portugal saw his price rocket to the £50m put on the 18-year-old´s head by Everton chairman Bill Kenwright.

However, the Liverpudlian is stalling on talking contract business with Everton and United remain favourites to land him if they can find a suitable payment package.

Adding Rooney to the Ronaldo-led young revolution developing at Old Trafford would be a massive answer from the Reds to the gauntlet thrown down by champions Arsenal, who believe power in the Premiership has shifted to Highbury.

Ferguson will be hoping his project for the future will mirror the Class of 92´s impact over a decade ago that installed United as England´s super power and demoted both Liverpool and Arsenal.

Boca opt for Old Trafford
Stuart Mathieson

WORLD club champions Boca Juniors have resolved a fixture pile-up by insisting: " We´re going to Old Trafford."

The Argentine giants were named in May with Manchester United, PSV Eindhoven and Urawa Red Diamonds as participants in the inaugural Vodafone Cup on August 3 and 5.

But their attendance at the Theatre of Dreams was threatened when it emerged they had also entered a smaller event at Leicester City the previous weekend.

The Buenos Aires-based club, who recently reached the final of the Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of the Champions League - have now scratched from the Leicester event.

Urawa, whose own nickname is The Reds, face Boca Juniors on Tuesday, August 3, before doing battle two nights later with United.

The second game on the opening evening is United against Ruud Van Nistelrooy´s former club PSV Eindhoven while the opener on Thursday, August 5, pitches Boca against PSV.

Stormy

Meanwhile, controversial Turk Alpay could be set for a stormy first appearance back on English soil at Old Trafford.

The former Aston Villa defender, who left English football in disgrace shortly after his verbal assault on David Beckham last autumn, has signed for Urawa Red Diamonds.

Villa drummed Alpay out of the Premiership by paying up his contract after deciding his incredible spat with Beckham in the Euro 2004 qualifier left him carrying too much baggage.

He subsequently joined Incheon United in Korea but has now pitched up in Japan.

The J-League club, the first side from Japan to play in a structured event in the UK, have arranged a warm-up game against Inter Milan exactly a week before they take to the field at Old Trafford.

They play the Italian giants in Japan on Tuesday, July 27.
