Gerrard decision may help Reds land Rooney
MANCHESTER United´s chances of securing Wayne Rooney´s signature have been boosted by Liverpool´s Steven Gerrard.

His 11th hour decision to snub a £30m move to Chelsea in favour of staying at Anfield can impact on Rooney´s own career move.

The two Liverpudlians have struck up a strong friendship with England and the fear for United was that if midfielder Gerrard had chosen to move to London then Chelsea´s hopes of snatching 18-year-old Rooney would have received a major boost.

But Gerrard has turned his back on the capital and the home-loving Euro 2004 sensation Rooney is unlikely to fancy the bright lights on his own.

Old Trafford is understood to remain the Everton player´s first choice destination and Chelsea´s failure to nail Gerrard will have strengthened the Reds´ hopes.

Furious

Stamford Bridge chief executive Peter Kenyon is said to be under pressure because of Gerrard´s U-turn after believing he had the player signed and sealed, if not delivered.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reported to have been furious that Gerrard slipped the net, and if Rooney becomes their No 1 target then Kenyon will step up efforts to beat his former employers to the biggest catch of the summer.

But Gerrard´s decision, although wrecking any hopes United may have had of signing the player Sir Alex Ferguson rates extremely highly, looks set to have a positive knock on effect.

Rooney has still not entered into contract talks with Everton despite a new offer being on the table from the Goodison outfit.

Arrogant

Meanwhile, United legend Eric Cantona has revealed he was flying the St George´s flag for England in Euro 2004 and has branded his own countrymen as " arrogant."

The Frenchman, playing in a beach football tournament in Lisbon said: " I am French but I was supporting England. It´s my country, I don´t want to know about France. I was born there but I feel English.

" In England when a player is good like Wayne Rooney, they say he is good, they give him an incentive, they support him - the team-mates as well as the fans - whereas the French have only negative things to say about everything and everyone.

Newcastle leading Butt chase
NEWCASTLE are winning the race to sign Nicky Butt and could seal his signature next week, according to a Toon website.

Having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and seen Frank Lampard take his place in the heart of England´s midfield, Butt seems to have finally accepted that he needs to move on for the good of his career.

And according to NUFC.com, Butt is now set to sign for Newcastle having previously attracted interest from Premiership rivals Birmingham, Everton and Bolton.

A move to Newcastle may well suit Butt as he would get European football, albeit in the Uefa Cup, and would also instantly become a key player in a squad that is talented but devoid of a genuine defensive midfielder.

The Toon have talented playmakers in Lauren Robert, Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer, Gary Speed, Darren Ambrose and Hugo Viana and with the addition of Butt´s defensive know-how could go from being a club on the brink of the top four to more realistic contenders for honours.

Pour finir:

:d) Advocaat: Ruud´s the best of the best

DUTCH DELIGHT: Ruud van Nistelrooy

HOLLAND coach Dick Advocaat hailed Ruud van Nistelrooy as a " gift from God" as he insisted he could see no reason why Manchester United should wish to sell their star striker.

Van Nistelrooy has consistently denied he is interested in a move to Real Madrid, while United have also pledged to keep hold of the Dutch international.

However, reports have again resurfaced, linking van Nistelrooy with a potential move to the Spanish club so United can supposedly fund the purchase of Wayne Rooney.

But Advocaat insisted: " As far as I know Ruud´s just signed a contract at United for another four years.

" He´s happy there, the manager´s happy with him, everybody´s happy with him - so why would he go?"

Indeed, with van Nistelrooy having scored four goals already at this tournament, his value to United has surely been underlined despite a relatively lean spell at the end of last season.

´Best of the best´

Advocaat added: " In my opinion, Ruud´s the best striker around. It´s incredible how he´s playing.

" He is a gift from God. He works his socks off and you can see that he´s desperate to get the result he wants - to get into the final and score more goals."

Van Nistelrooy´s enduring goalscoring prowess is perhaps Holland´s main cause for optimism ahead of their semi-final against hosts Portugal on Wednesday.

For although Chelsea-bound Arjen Robben has also impressed and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has been in fine form, the Dutch have rather stumbled through the competition so far.

Having drawn against Germany and lost to the Czech Republic, their qualification was only sealed when the Czech ´B´ team beat Germany.

They also needed penalties to get past Sweden in the quarter-finals and with a major fitness doubt over captain Frank de Boer, Advocaat is now in familiar territory - under considerable pressure.
