Sanz raps Beckham signing

Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz has attacked the club´s decision to sign David Beckham last year.

Real supremo Florentino Perez snared his latest Galactico despite a rival bid from Barcelona as Manchester United looked to controversially cash in on their lucrative asset.

Beckham started the season superbly but his form has dipped in 2004, and he was below par during Euro 2004.

Sanz, who is bidding to win the presidency back off Perez, told Europa Press that the transfer plans were all wrong last summer.

" It is an unbalanced team with big stars whose salaries are difficult to sustain," he blasted.

" It is obvious that the decision to sign Beckham and allow Claude Makelele to go was absurd.

" Beckham is a great player, but not where he played this year and, in any case, we already had Luis Figo in his position.

" They constructed a team with an eye more on marketing and Galacticos rather than on sporting realities."

Sanz goes head-to-head with Perez and Arturo Baldasano in the July 11 presidential elections.

Van´s our man
Manchester United have won their battle to hang on to goal ace Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Old Trafford outfit are convinced Real Madrid will NOT table an offer for the Dutch striker this summer. The Spanish giants have decided to give up on their bid to land the striker - and United were never going to sell anyway.
Bill Thornton, Daily Star

You´re a cheat Ruud
Portugal fear Ruud Van Nistelrooy will lead a Dutch dirty tricks campaign tonight. The hosts go into their Euro 2004 semi accusing the Manchester United strike ace of apparent cheating. Portugal boss Big Phil Scolari said: “Sometimes he gets an advantage by starting offside at free-kicks and during play. The referee has to be careful.” A Portugal insider said: “They won’t say anything publicly but they are also concerned there have been several incidents during the tournament where Van Nistelrooy appears to have gone to ground too easily.”
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Roo-no
Wayne Rooney will turn down a new contract with Everton and spark a massive transfer scramble between Chelsea and Manchester United. England´s Euro 2004 star has decided he wants to move on, either this summer or in the next transfer window.
Alan Nixon, Daily Mirror

United lead Roon chase
Manchester United have moved into pole position in the race to sign Wayne Rooney. The England strike star is set to snub a new Everton deal - even though Goodison chiefs insist they are ready to offer the 18-year-old the richest contract in club history. United now believe they can pip Chelsea to his signature - especially after Rooney’s big pal Steven Gerrard decided to snub Blues billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and stay in the North West at Liverpool. The Old Trafford giants may struggle to raise the £40million-plus Everton will demand - unless they sell Ruud van Nistelrooy. But boss Alex Ferguson believes Gerrard’s decision to stay at Anfield will make them favourites as the midfielder, 24, would have helped Rooney settle in London.
Phil Thomas and Ben Kinsella, The Sun

If United flog Ruud they will be Roo-ined
The first great transfer battle of the summer was won and lost on Monday when, with all the enthusiasm of a man who had just decided he was going down with the Titanic, Steven Gerrard announced he was turning his back on Chelsea and staying at Liverpool. But now another desperate tug-of-war is looming which holds the outcome of the race for the Premiership title in its hands. The rumours linking Ruud van Nistelrooy with Real Madrid have been circulating longer than the whispers that Gerrard was on his way to Stamford Bridge. But if United fail where Liverpool succeeded and lose their top man to the Bernabeu predators, they know the consequences will strike deep at the heart of the club.
Oliver Holt, Daily Mirror

Cock-up Kenyon
If a man can´t learn how to close the curtains when you are trying to persuade the England manager to walk out on the country and join Chelsea, how can you expect him to close a deal properly? But when he received the telephone call telling him that Steven Gerrard had slipped through Chelsea´s clutches at the last moment, Peter Kenyon´s frustration would have been complete. It meant the Chelsea chief executive had to compose a speech that is becoming all too familiar to Roman Abramovich, softening up the Russian billionaire for the news the club´s owner had never expected to hear once. Instead, it has been SIX times in three months, half a dozen occasions in which the coach and players promised by the former Manchester United chief executive have rebuffed the club´s advances at the stage where Chelsea believed the contracts had effectively been signed.

Roomania: Is It Just Paper Talk?

ManUtd.com´s Steve Bartram looks at the latest newspaper stories claiming Wayne Rooney is set to join United...

If you believe everything you read in the newspapers, then a deal to bring England hero Wayne Rooney to Manchester United is imminent.

But with an ever-soaring price tag, a broken fifth metatarsal bone and moneybags Chelsea waiting in the wings, a move to Old Trafford - for the moment at least - seems some way off.

The newspaper stories linking Rooney with the Reds are reminiscent of the time when United were in the running to sign Paul Gascoigne from Newcastle. Sir Alex Ferguson still rues the day the Geordie genius headed for the bright lights of London and joined Tottenham instead.

Many observers have compared Rooney to Gascoigne but genuine parallels between the pair grind to a halt after you establish that both are supremely gifted footballers with an apparent aversion to salad. Beyond that, there are no indications that Rooney is set to follow the ill-fated path that Gazza stumbled down.

If Gazza was an extrovert, Rooney comes across as level-headed and firmly anchored on planet earth, despite the tabloid hysteria. Goals are celebrated with a shy embarrassment, interviews and photo shoots are meekly but readily granted and he seemingly has no inclination to be lured by the trappings of fame. In short, the boy looks every inch a Manchester United player.

And so what about the fee? £50million? £100million? £7.5billion? ( Yes, one tabloid newspaper went into billions!) Statistics and common sense denote that a much, much lower fee should be on the cards.

So far, Rooney has scored 26 career goals. Last season, he scored nine goals in 40 games for Everton, and the same number of goals in just 12 games for England. Read what you will into those statistics and their implications.

Rumour has it that Rooney has told friends he would relish a move to United, and will snub the offer of a new five-year deal at Goodison Park. His current deal runs out in 18 months, which leaves Everton with a potential scenario of losing their prized asset for nothing.

Rooney´s current injury is likely to keep him at Everton for at least the short term; the player´s medical being an important part of any transfer ( just ask Ruud van Nistelrooy). Prospective buyers might wait until the January transfer window before making their move.

Of course, the final word remains with Everton and Rooney. If the player doesn´t want to leave, and the club wish to keep him, then the big guns are just going to have to quietly watch and covet.

Report by Steve Bartram.
