UNITED FAIL TO DISMISS ROONEY LINK
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has refused to extinguish speculation the club will make a summer bid for Euro 2004 star Wayne Rooney.
The Everton forward has established himself as the brightest talent in Portugal after a trio of stunning displays for England in the group phase.
Rooney´s exploits in lifting himself to the top of the competition´s goalscoring charts have merely intensified speculation he will leave Goodison Park in the summer.
Toffees boss David Moyes is hellbent on keeping the teenage wizard on Merseyside but concedes a world record bid of £50 million may alter his thinking.
Moyes has previously suggested only moneybags Chelsea could afford to prise Rooney from his grasp but The Red Devils have also been linked with a mammoth summer bid for the 18-year-old.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already tied up the captures of Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze for next season and Gill acknowledged there are unlikely to be further major additions to the Old Trafford ranks.
But Gill did not completely exclude the possibility of entering the chase for Rooney, who is now global football´s hottest property.
" Will there be more incoming transfers?" commented Gill in the Manchester Evening News.
" You can never say never but, in terms of what we sat down with Alex before he went away and talked about transfer targets, we have achieved the two key targets we wanted.
" We have done a lot of our spending now.
" We have spoken with Alex and we have a large squad now and there will potentially be some trimming of that.
" But, if you look at the competition in all areas now, we have a very strong team about the 24-mark, which is a number we are very comfortable with.
" Alex is comfortable so it is there or thereabouts."
