Big two on the move
Wayne Rooney, England´s inspiration at Euro 2004, is the man Sir Alex Ferguson wants to make Manchester United great again. And he has told friends he is preparing to send a message of intent to Arsenal and Chelsea by sealing a deal that will " rock" football. The United boss still dreams of giving his Mancunian team a double tinge of Scouse by also persuading Liverpool´s Steven Gerrard to snub Chelsea for a move to Old Trafford. But England midfielder Gerrard will not risk being branded a traitor by defecting to the team the Kop despise most. Gerrard will earn £110,000-a- week when he moves to Stamford Bridge. But while Gerrard and Rooney are close friends off the pitch, the teenager does not want to abandon his North-west roots. It is not just a question of whether Rooney joins United but when and for how much.
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

Ferguson in store for van der Vaart shock
Manchester United have dumped one “Posh and Becks” personality circus and could be hitching onto another if they follow up their long-standing interest in Holland’s Rafael van der Vaart. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the Ajax attacking midfielder and has been hoping to finalise a deal for the £15million-rated player following Euro 2004. But since meeting glamour girl Sylvie Meis, people around van der Vaart believe that he could be in real danger of self-destructing.

I’m not a very good player
Ruud van Nistelrooy last night offered a fascinating insight into his mindset at Euro 2004 by admitting: “I’m not a very good player.” The Manchester United star reckons the striker’s role does not come naturally to him and the only reason he has succeeded at Old Trafford is hard work. He said: “I’m one of those guys who needs to put in a lot of hard work to be any good. I’m not an exceptional player who can get by without pushing himself.”

Robben: I’ve joined the best
Arjen Robben has twisted the knife into Manchester United by revealing that he chose to join Chelsea because Sir Alex Ferguson´s team are a spent force. The 20-year-old Dutch striker opted to reject the Reds for a £17million move to join Roman Abramovich´s Stamford Bridge revolution - despite making two visits to look around Old Trafford last season. Robben said: " There is only one direction that Chelsea will go in the future - and that is upwards. The decision I made had nothing to do with money or short-term gain. I just felt that Chelsea´s best years were in the future and that might not be the case for Manchester United. Chelsea are an improving team, a club that is going places, and it did come into my thoughts that maybe United have had their best years. I just think it is the turn of another club to take over from United - and that club is Chelsea.”
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

Rosicky reiterates quit talk

Czech midfield ace Tomas Rosicky has reiterated his intention to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 23-year-old, who was close to joining Chelsea in January, has again revealed his plans to move away from Dortmund.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also know to be very interested in the midfielder - who looks set for a move this summer.

Speaking after Czech Republic´s stunning 3-2 win over Holland on Saturday, he said: " I am really enjoying this stint with the national team. It is great fun playing football again and that was not the case in Dortmund.

" My future will be decided after the European Championships but I´ve always said that I want to go to a big club."

Rosicky clashed with former Borussia coach Matthias Sammer at the end of the season and was even dropped - but he now claims that he has proven his old coach was wrong.

" I think I´ve shown everyone in Dortmund that they made a mistake not letting me play," he said.

Dortmund, who are in severe trouble financially, sold Torsten Frings to Bayern Munich for €9 million only last week and Rosicky now looks set to join the exodus.

One positive for Dortmund came from Rosicky´s countryman Jan Koller - who indicated his desire to stay at the club.

" There´s no doubt that I will return to the BVB after Euro 2004," said Koller - who had been linked with Turkish outfit Besiktas.

Benitez Warns Off Gerrard Suitors

Steven Gerrard: Linked with a £31million move
to Chelsea, but Ferguson is also an admirer
Transfers: Who will United sign next?

New Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is determined to stave off interest in Steven Gerrard from his known Premiership suitors.

Chelsea have been linked with the England midfielder and Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer of his ability, pinpointing him as an ideal long-term successor to Reds skipper Roy Keane.

However, Benitez is planning talks with Gerrard when he returns from England duty in Euro 2004.

" I will try to talk to him and tell him how important he is to us," Benitez told Liverpool´s website.

" For now it hasn´t happened," he said of recent speculation linking Gerrard with a £31million switch to Stamford Bridge. " We are waiting and we know he is still here with us. We know he is important for us, but we will wait."

Report by Ben Hibbs.

Cristiano Ronaldo is delighted that host nation Portugal are through to the quarter finals of Euro 2004.
The United youngster is indifferent to who his side face in their next game, even though he may end up facing United team-mates if England avoid defeat against Croatia.

Ronaldo said: " We are just glad we are through.

" I don´t really know if I would prefer to play Croatia or England, but I do know that whoever we play we will have to produce another big performance like we did against Spain to win.

The 19-year-old impressed as a substitute against Greece and Russia, and continued his fine form against Spain in his first start of the tournament.

" I feel I have had two good performances as a substitute, and I was very happy to have the faith and confidence of the coach to start the game," he said.

" It was a great victory against a powerful side and hopefully we can now go far in this tournament."

Meanwhile, Portugal defender Jorge Andrade has heaped praise on the United youngster.

Andrade said: " I have to congratulate Cristiano Ronaldo on how he played against Spain. He did very well. He is like our Wayne Rooney, young and very talented."
