Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has revealed there is nothing his club could do to prevent Steven Gerrard from joining Manchester United.

United have been strongly linked with the Anfield favourite since the start of this year after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the midfield powerhouse is the type of player he would like to have at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho has warned Chelsea´s superstars he likes to work with a " small squad" - hinting a number of players could leave this summer.

Former Porto coach Mourinho on Wednesday took control of a squad containing over 30 players, with keeper Peter Cech and winger Arjen Robben already on the way this summer.

But the new Chelsea boss, who has taken over the reins from Claudio Ranieri, likes to manage a squad of " 21 players plus goalkeepers and no more".

And that could mean the likes of Juan Sebastian Veron, Geremi and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink leaving Stamford Bridge.
