United chase £9m Geremi
Alex Ferguson is ready to pinch midfielder Geremi from under the noses of Middlesbrough. The Manchester United boss aims to scupper Boro´s attempts to secure a permanent deal for their on-loan Real Madrid ace. The Cameroon player - rated at £9million - has been the star of Steve McClaren´s side this season after a £7.5million move to Chelsea fell through at the start of the season. Boro were determined to get their man on a permanent deal this summer. But it is understood United officials opened talks with Real counterparts ahead of Tuesday´s European Cup quarter-final in Spain. Geremi, 24, has never hidden how much he has enjoyed his time at the Riverside. But his performances during the World Cup finals last summer and his Champions League experience during three previous seasons at Real have impressed Fergie. Boro have first option but a deal depends on whether or not they are able to put together a sizeable bid. If United pull off the swoop then a number of Old Trafford stars will be looking over their shoulders.

Let me tame Giggs
Andy Griffin has begged Newcastle boss Bobby Robson for the chance to lock horns with Manchester United´s Ryan Giggs. The tough-nut defender, 24, has made a name for himself at St James´ Park shackling the likes of Giggs, David Ginola and David Beckham. Griffin is a specialist at snuffing out the threat from dangerous wingers and is desperate for another chance to test himself against the Welsh wizard. Newcastle fans are used to celebrating Alan Shearer´s finishing and the pace of Craig Bellamy - but they are equally appreciative of Griffin´s crunching tackles. Griffin said: "I´m usually put in against wingers. But I just want to play and, if that means marking Ryan Giggs, then fine.

Sheri´s Sporting deal
Teddy Sheringham could land one last big pay-day with Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese giants have enquired about the veteran Tottenham striker, 37, who becomes a free agent in the summer. And they will break the bank to persuade the ex-England star to join them. Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle is stalling on offering Sheri a new deal. Sporting have contacted his agent Barry Neville, who set up keeper Peter Schmeichel´s move from Manchester United to Sporting in 1999. And Sheri´s £42,000-a-week wages are not a problem for the club.

Our kids will overtake Reds says Magpies chief
Freddy Shepherd has stoked up Newcastle´s clash with Manchester United by predicting his young Geordies will leapfrog Sir Alex Ferguson´s side and win the Premiership in the next two years. The Newcastle chairman reckons the football world is becoming increasingly envious of Newcastle´s talented players who he hopes will create a Ferguson-style dynasty. He is still praying Newcastle produce a 33-1 miracle and prove the bookies wrong by beating the Mancunians at St James´s Park tomorrow to spark a late title charge. He said: "Don´t write us off yet - even if the bookies have at those silly odds. I had a bet at the start of the season and I have not given up on it yet." He added: "Second next year would be the aim, at least, and then let´s win it after that. We have gone for younger players like Kieron Dyer, Jermaine Jenas and Hugo Viana and even Laurent Robert. I see parallels with how Manchester emerged."
Simon Bird, Daily Mirror
Friends v United
When Arsene Wenger looks around his dressing room for characters ready to meet the challenge of one of the most important weeks in Arsenal history he will fix his sights on Sol Campbell. The Highbury boss can feel Sir Alex Ferguson´s breath on his neck in the Premiership title race, but before next Wednesday´s championship showdown with Manchester United there is the small matter of an FA Cup semi-final to deal with. And while Wenger can boast of a side full of proven champions, perhaps no one epitomises their ethos better than Campbell. The England defender may be quietly spoken off the field, but he possesses a fierce desire for success, and has no plans to let the chance of a second straight Double slip through his fingers.
Martin Rogers, Daily Mirror
Baby girl for Giggs - bet she can dribble
Soccer star Ryan Giggs told of his delight last night after he became a dad for the first time. The Manchester United winger´s fiancee Stacey Cooke gave birth to a baby girl - two months early - weighing just three and a half pounds. Doctors decided the 24-year-old needed a caesarean section because she had suffered weeks of problems during her pregnancy. Ryan, 29, spent the day at Hope hospital Manchester after the birth at 10am yesterday. When he emerged last night the beaming Welsh international said: "I am a proud dad. I saw my daughter being born and was thrilled by the whole thing. It was great. Stacey and the baby are fine. I don´t know when they´ll come home. We haven´t decided on a name yet." Stacey was taken to hospital a week ago after contractions started. The baby was last night in an incubator.

Becks is Real-ly average
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas last night mocked David Beckham, claiming he is not good enough for the European Champs. And he has sparked a new war of words with Manchester United ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford. Casillas insists Ruud van Nistelrooy´s goal in United´s 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu is to Madrid´s advantage because it will stop them being complacent.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star
Becks feels strain of leading England
David Beckham looked more like a clapped out Mini than a Maestro in Madrid. The stage was set for the England skipper to strut his stuff against the best team in the world, but he just didn´t have enough energy to do it. It looked like he was suffering from the effects of leading England in the two pressurised Euro 2004 qualifying matches against Liechenstein and Turkey.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star
Dutch of class
Ruud van Nistelrooy is the record-breaker who is set to shoot Manchester United to title glory. The deadly Dutchman isn´t only banging in the goals for the second consecutive season. He is looking much stronger than last year, when his stamina ran out. As United try to shake off the defeat to Real Madrid and re-focus on the massive match at Newcastle tomorrow, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is boosted by Van the Man´s surge. He said: "Ruud had a lull about a month ago but came back stronger than ever. We´re hoping he can keep this up."
Bill Thornton, Daily Star
The rise and rise of Ruud
Amid the hysteria that has followed Manchester United´s defeat by Real Madrid this week, it has gone almost unnoticed that there is one player from Old Trafford who would make it into the ranks of the Kings of Europe. Established European masters such as Roy Keane, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs may have suffered in comparison to Vicente del Bosque´s remarkable team in the Bernabeu on Tuesday night but Ruud van Nistelrooy did not.
Ian Ladyman, Daily Mail
Arrogant? No, Fergie, confident
Dennis Bergkamp has reopened the war of words with Manchester United as Arsenal head into the four days that will decide their season by telling Sir Alex Ferguson: "We´re not arrogant, just confident." The Dutchman said: "Mr Ferguson has called Arsenal arrogant. But the way I understand arrogance is that you do not respect other people or other teams. I don´t like arrogance, it is not a nice quality in a person and I don´t see myself as that - and I hope I have never been so."
Nigel Clarke, Daily Express
Ruud´s ready for Robson
Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned his old boss Sir Bobby Robson that Manchester United have no fear going into tomorrow´s crunch clash with Newcastle. Sir Alex Ferguson´s men will open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premiership if they bounce back from their Champions League defeat by Real Madrid with a win at St James´ Park. "Everyone´s ready for Newcastle," said Ruud. "They are a complete team but there will be no surprises - we know exactly what we need to do and we know the team and the players."

"Wilf´s World: Newcastle & Arsenal"
Former United manager Wilf McGuinness looks forward to the back-to-back crunch games against Newcastle this Saturday and Arsenal next Wednesday...
Greatest ever title?
In my last column ( 1 April) I talked about the terrific title race United are involved in, and it’s gathering pace after our 4-0 win over Liverpool. We have two huge games against Newcastle and Arsenal coming up and I honestly believe that if we can win those games and claim the title, it will be our greatest ever Premier League triumph. All the odds have been stacked against us. We’ve been written off, we have the hardest run-in of the three challengers, and to overcome the injury problems we had at the start of the season is an achievement in itself. It can be done!
Newcastle away
The Newcastle match is very tough, so we’ll have to see what comes of that game on Saturday. But we know what we have got to do to win this title. It will be great to get a victory at St James’ Park as they’ve only lost one league game at home all season. But it’s not going to be easy. However, Newcastle have lost other games at home in Europe, and we play a more European style so that may work in our favour. I don’t think Newcastle can continue that record of only one loss at home for much longer, but we’ll see what happens. They’ve had a great season and with the pace they’ve got through Bellamy, and the finishing of Alan Shearer, they are a danger all the time.
Arsenal away
The Arsenal match next Wednesday is also a massive game. If we can get six points from these two battles it will be a dream come true. People say we have the hardest run-in, but it’s not about the luck of the run-in, it’s all about what you do in those games. Arsenal supposedly have the easiest finish to the campaign, but they have dropped points against Everton and Aston Villa, in games that everyone thought they would win. I wouldn’t put all my money on Arsenal slipping up to Sunderland but it happens! I’ve said it before, but we just need to concentrate on our own game.
Arsenal aren’t playing good football. They are not playing the football they are capable of, but that is their problem not ours. It’s an excellent time for us to play them, they’ve had injuries and are low on confidence. We must stop them playing in the right places, which is where we went wrong against Madrid. Arsenal have quality, although not the quality that Real Madrid possess!
I said in my last column that I have a good feeling about the Arsenal game, and I still believe that. The young goalkeeper Stuart Taylor has made one or two mistakes, Cygan has looked shaky – there’s panic at the back there. Those mistakes might not happen on Wednesday but then again they might.
Experience counts
United’s experience counts for a lot in these situations. We’ve been there several times before and we know what it takes. Arsenal haven’t got that same level of experience. That is a massive advantage to us.
Tough run of games
Newcastle and Arsenal away are both tough games – we´re in second place and we’re playing the teams in first and third, you can’t get any tougher than that. And the week after that we’ve got Real Madrid coming up so that’ll be a nice easy one! It’s become a bit of a cliché to say that every game is a cup final, but it’s true. There’s no point in beating Newcastle and Arsenal if we go and lose to Blackburn. So Saturday is another cup final.
Enjoy the games, and get behind the team!
Wilf McGuinness

"Vodafone Match Preview: Newcastle"
It’s been said before, but there is no let up in United’s push for honours this season. You’d think a trip to Madrid to take on the European champions in the vast surrounds of the Bernabeu stadium could only precede an anti-climatic following game. Not so.
United travel to Newcastle’s impressive St James’ Park on Saturday for a game just as important as the one in Spain if United are to claim any silverware this season.
United have already seen off Liverpool – the first of three massive Premiership games that could, and probably will, determine the destination of the Premiership crown this term.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were faced with a similar scenario earlier in the season. Instead it was Newcastle the Reds took on first. United won 5-3 at Old Trafford in late November against the Magpies, before seeing off Liverpool 2-1 and Arsenal 2-0. A recurrence of the nine points bagged then, and the Premiership title will almost certainly return to Old Trafford after a brief holiday in the marble halls of Highbury.
However, Newcastle have title aspirations of their own, now matter how slim they may be – the Magpies are six points off United and Arsenal and still in with a shout.
The mood in the Newcastle camp is one of ‘nothing to lose’. "We´re not going to throw the towel in now - why should we?" Newcastle utility player Andy Griffin told the club’s website.
"When Everton beat us on Sunday, it made our situation that much tougher, but our ambition as a squad is to win trophies and that hasn´t changed because we dropped two points, he added.
Anyone unsure about Newcastle’s intent for this Tyne test need only heed Griffin’s words. ”There´s the old cliche that anything can happen in football," he said. "We´re going out to win against Manchester United. If we do that, second place at least is still in the melting pot. We´ll just see where we end up in May."
At the moment United may just have to see where they end up, the title race is as tight as it has been since United claimed the first instalment of the historic Treble on the last day of the 1998-99 Premiership calendar.
United are facing a few selection problems in midfield. David Beckham is an injury worry for United after feeling his hamstring against Real Madrid, while Veron is battling to return, but no sooner than the return leg against Madrid.
Phil Neville was suspended for the match in Madrid. And if Beckham does not make the match on Saturday lunchtime, Phil may be a crucial cog. In which case United would be left with the bare bones in the engine room. Paul Scholes, Keane, Butt and Giggs is still a formidable quartet, but this would mean Scholes playing out wide, or drafting in Ole to play on the right.
Fergie’s side will no doubt be hungry to erase the memory of losing in Madrid. The spotlight will be on United to see how they react, it must be a positive one.
Another three points would edge United that bit nearer the title, and with Arsenal awaiting the Reds at Highbury on Wednesday, only three points will do.
Report by Ben Hibbs.

=>"Opta Facts and Figures"
Saturday’s match will be the 137th meeting of the two sides in all competitions.
United hold the edge in this fixture with 65 wins to Newcastle’s 39, with a draw the outcome on 32 other occasions.
United’s biggest win in this fixture came in May 1968 when the Reds ran out 6-0 winners at Old Trafford – just 25 days before they beat Benfica in the European Cup final at Wembley.
The Reds suffered their heaviest defeat at the hands of Newcastle back in September 1927 when they were comprehensively beaten 7-1 at Old Trafford by the Geordies.
Just like their meeting earlier this season, this fixture has been full of goals over the years, with one particular meeting back in September 1930 producing a staggering eleven goals as Newcastle ran out 7-4 winners at Old Trafford.
Newcastle are the only side to have scored four or more goals against United in more than one Premiership game.
The two sides have traded 54 goals in 19 Premiership meetings so far – an average of 2.84 goals per game.
No other Premiership player has been substituted more than Newcastle winger Nolberto Solano this season – the Peruvian has been hooked 18 times thus far.
Of Alan Shearer’s 16 Premiership goals this season, five of them have been headers - making him the most prolific striker with his head.
No other Premiership goalkeeper has recorded more shutouts this season than Shay Given with 12.
However, in 19 Premiership meetings between the sides, the Geordies have kept only four clean sheets against the Reds.

"Ladbrokes Form and Betting"
A disappointing result on Tuesday evening at the Bernabeu, but nevertheless, there is still some hope for United thanks to the away goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy. It was 11/1 for a 3-1 Real victory, and Luis Figo was a generous 12/1 to open the scoring. The scorecast would have returned £80 for every pound that was staked.
Can United bounce back from that defeat to win the Champions League? Seba certainly thinks so. The Red Devils are now available at 12/1 to be crowned European Champions at Old Trafford.
Back on the domestic front, United can move three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the league if they can overcome Newcastle in another Saturday lunchtime kick-off. Fergie’s men are now 6/5 to re-claim the Premiership crown. Can they do it? If you think they can and you placed £20 on them topping the league, you would collect £44 at the end of the season.
Saturday will by no means be an easy match, with Sir Bobby’s men still harbouring hopes of snatching the title themselves. The Magpies are tough to beat at St James’s Park and United will have to be at their best to get a result. United are 7/5 to get the victory, but there isn’t much in the betting and Newcastle are 6/4.
