VILLARREAL TURN TO FORLAN

Villarreal have switched their attentions to Manchester United´s Diego Forlan after talks broke down over top target Henrik Larsson.
The Spanish side are keen to bolster their attack for next season and had put Larsson top of their shopping list.

Larsson is available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Celtic and is considering his options.

Villarreal had hoped to entice him to El Estadio Madrigal after opening negotiations with the Swede´s agents, but after initial positive meetings talks have broken down between all parties.

Reports emanating from Spain suggest that demands from Larsson´s agent Rob Jansen put pay to the move which has forced Villarreal to switch their focus elsewhere to Forlan.

Forlan´s future at United is uncertain after the recent capture of Alan Smith from Leeds United.

The arrival of Smith increases competition for places in United´s attack and it would seem to push Forlan further down the pecking order.

The Uruguayan international has expressed a desire to be playing regularly and if Smith´s arrival limits his chances even further he could consider a move away.

United would be willing to sell the 24-year-old as he failed to meet expectations at Old Trafford since arriving from Independiente and they even tried to offload him to Atletico Madrid in part-exchange for Fernando Torres only to have their offer rejected by the Spanish club.

MOURINHO ADMITS: IT IS CHELSEA

Successful Porto coach Jose Mourinho has finally admitted that his next destination is poised to be Chelsea.

The Portuguese boss, who steered his side to UEFA Champions League glory on Wednesday, has confirmed the worst kept secret in football, even though Claudio Ranieri is still in charge at Stamford Bridge.

" I have some offers in my wallet but one which I very much want to accept, which is that from Chelsea," he told Portuguese channel Sport TV.

While Porto celebrate a famous 3-0 triumph over Monaco in Gelsenkirchen, their highly-rated manager is awaiting talks with his agent that will bring the move to Chelsea even closer.

Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon was in attendance at AufSchalke Arena but refused to comment on Mourinho´s likely appointment or Ranieri´s future, which has been the subject of media speculation for months.

Mourinho actually has two years left on his contract with the European Cup winners but, despite rumoured interest from Liverpool, his heart seems set on managing Roman Abramovich´s millions in West London.

LONDRES ( AFP) - Le club de Chelsea ( 1re div. anglaise) prépare une offre pour recruter l´attaquant ivoirien de Marseille ( L1) Didier Drogba, affirme jeudi le quotidien britannique The Independent.

Le richissime propriétaire du club anglais, le Russe Roman Abramovitch, s´apprête à proposer 17 millions de livres ( 25 millions d´euros) à Marseille pour s´attacher les services du prolifique attaquant.

Chelsea est en effet à la recherche d´un attaquant et a échoué à recruter l´Ukrainien Andrei Shevchenko qui a prolongé jusqu´au 30 juin 2008 avec le Milan AC, le club champion d´Italie.

Selon le quotidien britannique, Marseille aurait refusé une offre initiale de Chelsea mais devant le montant proposé serait désormais ouvert à des négociations.

Goalkeeping duo Ben Williams and James Jowsey plus teenage striker Neil Wood will not have contracts renewed for next seasons, and will be able to join new clubs when they wish.

All three players have shown a lot of promise during their time at Old Trafford, but have been unable to break into first-team reckoning, so Sir Alex Ferguson feels it will be best for both parties if they find new employment.

Williams failed to register a senior appearance for the Red Devils, but did spend 5 consecutive games on the bench at the start of last season when the club was suffering from a goalkeeping injury crisis. The 22-year-old now looks likely to sign for Crewe Alexandra, having spent a successful loan spell with the Cheshire outfit in the latter part of this season. Dario O’Gradi made no secret of the fact he wanted to extend the loan deal with United, but with Williams now available on a free transfer, the Railywaymen could have a new permanent goalkeeper on their books by the start of next season.

Neil Wood has also been away from Old Trafford, spending some time with Lancastrian rivals Burnley. The forward, who also has made no appearances for United, netted once in 11 appearances for the Clarets, and also enjoyed a loan spell with Peterborough United earlier in the campaign, scoring 1 goal in 3 games under Barry Fry. A legion of Football League clubs are expected to express interest in the attacker from a whole host of Football League clubs.

James Jowsey is a young goalkeeper who had shown a lot of potential when he first arrived at the club, but has failed to make an impact. Some solid performances for the youth and reserves will mean the shot stopper is unlikely to have any problems in finding a new club.
