Everton have stepped up the pace in the race to sign Alan Smith with a reported £7m bid for the Leeds striker.
Toffees boss David Moyes confirmed the Merseysiders had made a " substantial offer" for Smith, despite their apparent tight finances.
Moyes said: " My hope is to partner Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney in my Everton team next season."
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright underlined their enthusiasm to bring Smith to Goodison Park.
Kenwright told Everton´s website: " David and I have been discussing Alan Smith´s situation at Leeds for two weeks.
" I can confirm that in the last 24 hours we have had contact with those involved in the hope that Alan Smith might be an Everton player next season."

Everton have confirmed they intend to make a " substantial offer´´ for Leeds striker Alan Smith, who is keen on a move to Manchester United.
The relegated Yorkshire club this week revealed they had turned down two bids of £3.5m and then £5.5m from United for the 23-year-old, while Birmingham and Middlesbrough have also shown interest.
Smith´s preferred destination is believed to be Old Trafford.
But Everton manager David Moyes the club´s official website: " I can confirm that we are making a substantial offer for Alan Smith.´´
After finishing fourth from bottom in the Premiership, Moyes has urged the Goodison board to help him strengthen the side.
His pleas appear to have been heeded, with the Scot revealing: " My hope is to partner Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney in my Everton side next season."
Deputy chairman Bill Kenwright added: " David and I have been discussing the Alan Smith situation at Leeds for over two weeks now."
News of Everton´s interest surfaced when Lorimer told BBC Radio Leeds: " We´ve had lots of bids for Alan, the latest being around £7m from Everton."
A club spokesman claimed, by contrast, Leeds " have not yet received any offer from Everton" but Lorimer added: " It would appear to be imminent. I am led to believe it is on the way."
He also said: " Smith´s agent has indicated Alan´s preferred choice is Old Trafford, but they have to up their bid."
Lorimer is adamant any transfer has to be right for all parties, not just Smith.
" It´s obviously a problem going to Manchester United with Alan being a Leeds player," said Lorimer, who has previously valued the England international forward at £10m.
" But if we were to sell him under market value, I don´t think the supporters would like us too much.
" It is obviously his say as to where he wants to goes. If he wants to go to Manchester United, and he is happy with that, then that´s fine.
" If Manchester United are happy they want him, then that´s fine, but they have to make us happy too by making us a better offer. If they do that then everybody is happy."
< <<< enfin un joueur qui veut jouer chez nous . Mais l probléme c´est que c´est alan smith . Avec un peu de chance il va aller a everton
John O´Shea says that his woeful attempts to stop Cristiano Ronaldo in a pre-season friendly helped secure the winger´s move to Old Trafford.
Just like O´Shea did 12 months ago, Ronaldo has burst onto the Premiership scene in startling fashion this season with Manchester United.
O´Shea got an early glimpse of Ronaldo´s talent when he tried to mark him during United´s friendly defeat in the Portuguese capital last August.
" For such a young player, Cristiano´s physique and technique are incredible,´´ said O´Shea.
" He gives defenders nightmares because he just keeps going at them. I think I got him his move to United because that night in Lisbon I couldn´t stop him.
" The people who say he is a one-trick pony obviously don´t watch him properly. That one trick they are talking about still fools defenders and believe me, he has another 10 in his locker.
" Apart from swear words, the language is still a bit of a problem to him but football-wise we are talking about one of the best talents in Europe.
" There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to become one of the biggest stars in the
game.´´
