SHOCK RIVAL INTEREST FOR ROVERS

Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness has confirmed an interest in Tromso´s Morten Gamst Pedersen but there could be shock competitors for his signature in the shape of Manchester United.
Souness has been closely monitoring the winger for some time, although Lars Iver Strand has also caught his eye, but Sir Alex Ferguson is hiring United´s private jet in order to watch Tromso play on May 20, according to Norwegian reports.

Meanwhile, a 4-1 thumping of champions Rosenborg in front of Souness clearly impressed the Rovers manager.

" Tromso played really well and deserved the win," Souness told Bladet Tromso. " It was a good team performance.

" I felt that the number 11 ( Gamst Pedersen) and the number 18 ( Strand) impressed me the most. But it would be wrong to single out players as the whole team played well.

" I´m still watching him ( Gamst Pedersen). This was the third time. I think Morten has got many qualities.

" He has got an eye for goal and is a clever player. He also shoots well.

" I think we will continue to follow him. We will see what happens after the season in England ends this weekend.

" I have no plans.

" Morten is very different to Damien Duff," he said when asked if he could compare the Norseman to the former Ewood Park idol.

" The question is - is he strong enough for The Premiership? We must eventually try him there to have a look.

" It´s not my money and I have not even thought about how much he is worth."

However, VG reports that Ferguson has also been alerted by the 22-year-old´s fine form and will watch him play against Molde, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer´s former club, before the FA Cup final with Millwall.

Agent Rune Hauge is friends with Ferguson and is rumoured to have recommended Gamst Pedersen as a potential long-term replacement for Ryan Giggs.

Tromso would ask around £2 million for the talented wide man.

" TIL´s economic situation could have been better," chairman Trygve Myrvang told Dagbladet.

" All of us who attended the AGM know that. We also had a £400,000 player sales figure in our budget this season.

" Of course, when Graeme Souness has shown such a big interest repeatedly, it shows that he is surely interested."

GIGGS URGES UNITED MOVE FOR SMITH

Manchester United´s Ryan Giggs has urged the club to mount a bid for Leeds United striker Alan Smith.
The Red Devils are said to be hot on the trail of the England international, who is set to leave Elland Road following The Whites´ relegation.

Birmingham, Newcastle and Middlesbrough are reported to have already lodged firm offers for the 23-year-old - but United are being strongly tipped to join the bidding.

" There has been a lot of talk about Alan Smith saying he´d be interested in a move to Manchester United," said Giggs.

" Any player in the Premiership would want Alan in their team and we are no different.

" He is a very good player and we would certainly welcome him at Old Trafford. I can´t pretend there isn´t a huge rivalry between ourselves and Leeds and it doesn´t often happen that a player moves from one to the other.

" But recently Rio Ferdinand and Eric Cantona have done it. And, in this day and age, I don´t think the rivalry should affect Alan´s decision.

" It must be hard for Alan because he is Leeds through and through. But he is an ambitious lad who wants to be playing at the highest level.

" He is an excellent striker who should be playing in the Premiership and, with Leeds being relegated, he needs a new challenge.

" We will have to wait and see where he ends up but I know everyone here would be very pleased if it was United."
