Ferguson targets young Spanish defender

The Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has made Barcelona´s skilful young defender Gerard Piqué Bernabeu his first unexpected signing target for next season.

The outstanding teenager, known as Piqué, is captain of the national youth side but has yet to make his first-team debut for Barça, who are offering him a big deal to stay with them rather than go to England.

Ferguson is desperate to snap up the best youngsters in Europe and his agents are working on rapidly closing the deal for Piqué. United would have to pay Barcelona compensation, possibly as much as £3m, but it is a fraction of what the player would be worth once he is an established player.

Ferguson is keen to compete with Arsenal and Chelsea for the best young talent after losing out on several young players recently. The United manager knows Arsenal also want Piqué after taking Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in a controversial deal a few months ago.

Chelsea took Arjen Robben out of their grasp and are also due to sign Anderlecht´s Vincent Kompany, while Arsenal signed Robin van Persie this week. Piqué and the Belgian youngster Anthony van den Borre are the two young players Ferguson has set his sights on as players to build a team around for a decade to come.

Van den Borre is already in the full Belgian international squad at the age of 16 and with only a handful of first-team games under his belt. But United know if they wait too long for these players they will go elsewhere because of the competition at that level.

Chelsea have already done a deal to sign Kompany from Anderlecht in 2005. The 17-year-old centre-half was on United´s list for months before they were outbid. The United manager knows his squad is growing older and he needs an influx of new talent. Piqué´s signing could be the first of many significant buys for the future.

Meanwhile, United´s chief executive, David Gill, said he has written to both Barcelona and Real Madrid to inform them that Ruud van Nistelrooy will not be sold, despite recent speculation. " We want to make it very clear to them what the position is and make sure the message gets through," he said. " We can´t be any more specific. We´ve been categorical about this."

United regarding the availability of one Ruud van Nistelrooy. He confirmed
yesterday that

" We received in writing a communication from Manchester saying that he´s
not for sale,"

" Van Nistelrooy is a great player but we have never contemplated his
incorporation into our squad.

" If we were interested in reinforcing our centre-forward position, then the
coaches would speak to us and we would say the opportunities that exist."

YORKE ISSUES RUUD WARNING

Dwight Yorke has warned Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy that he faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford if reports of a bust-up with manager Sir Alex Ferguson are true.
Blackburn Rovers ace Yorke knows to his detriment not to cross Ferguson, having been bombed out of Old Trafford in the summer of 2002 after falling out-of-favour with the Scot.

Van Nistelrooy´s future at United has been cast in doubt as a result of the alleged bust-up with Ferguson, with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona waiting in the wings to sign him.

Yorke believes there will be " only one winner" if it comes down to Ferguson and van Nistelrooy.

" If you ever fall out with Alex Ferguson there will only be one winner. It is his way or no way," Yorke told BBC Radio Five Live.

" Ruud has been there for three years and won one championship which is not enough for a player - or a club - of that calibre.

" He may see it ( a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona) as a new challenge."

FRENCH STRIKER´S UNITED SNUB

Sochaux striker Jeremy Menez has admitted he was close to signing for Manchester United.
The 17-year-old French starlet chose the stability of remaining at the club where he was schooled, signing a three-year contract with the League Cup winners.

It was obviously difficult to resist Sir Alex Ferguson´s advances as he travelled to visit Old Trafford and was reportedly offered a four-year contract worth ¿36,000 per month.

However, Menez instead became the youngest player ever to sign professional terms in Le Championnat.

" I must admit Manchester United was very attractive," he told France Football.

" We were made to feel very welcome by Mr Ferguson.

" When I came back, I wanted to join Manchester because I was charmed. Manchester was a dream come early.

" But we thought about that with my family.

" People from Sochaux and the French team also talked with me.

" I was attracted by United, not for money, but for what the club represents in the football world.

" I was a little perturbed by those events. I even had a talk with Benoit Pedretti.

" He told me to wait, to get my education calmly, and money will come a little later.

" My priorities are to play with the professionals and with the young French teams.

" Moreover, I know how much I owe to people at Sochaux and my teachers."

ROONEY CLOSE TO NEW TOFFEES DEAL

Everton boss David Moyes has revealed that the club are close to agreeing a new five-year deal with star striker Wayne Rooney.
The Toffees are keen to tie down the England international to a new long-term deal to ward off interest from a number of clubs.

Rooney´s form and club and country has attracted the interest of a host of clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid and Everton are looking to end all speculation regarding his future by agreeing a new contract with Rooney.

Moyes is confident that the 18-year-old will put pen-to-paper on the five-year contract on offer to him over the summer.

" The indications are he´ll sign in the summer and I´m happy," said Moyes.

" We are building for the future here and we want to build a side around Wayne - we don´t want to develop him for another club."

Rooney has always admitted he has no desire to leave his boyhood favourites and he is set to sort out his future following Euro 2004.
