Fergie
“There are so many things we’ve done that we should not be envious of anyone creating their own bit of history for themselves. We’ve bigger priorities. What Arsenal achieve this season does not bother me. I think it’s important that you create your own history. We were the first team to go into Europe, the first British team to win the World Club Championship, the first English team to win the European Cup, the first team to get the Treble and the first team to get three Doubles. What we did in the last two games against Arsenal is proof there’s a lot of life left in this club yet. All the talk about the end of an era is over the top and I think most people would agree.”
The Boss: United Lack Magic
United Crying Out For A Midfield Magician
Wilf: Fergie needs some midfield magic
Read: Exclusive Roy Keane interview
The defeat to Liverpool was what you could call ‘one of those days’. But United have had far too many of them this season and this one of the worst, especially for the fans.
To us, it’s still a big, big Derby game and there wasn’t really a performance worth talking about. They weren’t worthy of a win, but neither were we. It was a very disappointing game.
Gary will be kicking himself for attempting a tackle that should never have been made. He got lead into it by Steven Gerrard when all he needed to do was stay on his feet. Gary will be very upset at conceding that penalty.
It looked like an end of season game where nothing was at stake. There was a lot at stake between two great, old foes, but neither team seemed capable of raising their game.
As I have mentioned in my column in past weeks, one of the few pleasing components to our performance was that of Ronaldo. He showed that bit of spark, he excited the fans, myself included, with some of his runs.
Early in the game, Fletcher was moving well and showed that he has grown in stature and has gained experience this season. He tired in the last ten minutes where it seemed like he couldn’t put a ball right. But they were two positive aspects to take from the game.
Keano wasn’t bursting through in midfield as he normally does, he didn’t have a bad game by any means.
But, the one player who stood out in the game is a Liverpool player; Steven Gerrard. He was about the only one who looked interested. If it were down to me, I would have Steven Gerrard on United’s summer shopping list. He could helps us, and I am sure he would love to come here!
Chelsea also lost on Saturday which still gives us plenty of hope of getting that second spot. But, even though they lost, there was a lot more sparkle about their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle than there was at Old Trafford.
Both sets of teams looked lethargic, a lot of the players that you would expect to shine in such a big, important game, just didn’t produce. It was pretty ordinary.
" We need a magician midfielder. A player, such as Ronaldinho or like we had in Cantona, that can unlock defences, find a way through that no other player can."
Wilf McGuinness
I keep discussing these players that we might have had, chiefly Ronaldinho, and, although it is with hindsight, it breaks my heart that we didn’t sign him.
Once again, I watched him help beat Real Madrid for Barcelona at the weekend. Some of his touches were fantastic, and just what we have been lacking this season. I would love to know the true story behind that transfer deal one day. That was one player I thought we were going to get. It was a real kick in the teeth.
Arsenal have that type of player, somebody who can produce a piece of off-the-cuff brilliance to win them games. He’s been their shining light. If they were without him, they wouldn’t be going the season undefeated.
That is one of the defining differences in this season. Arsenal have got a player that can produce one piece of brilliance, sheer magic, whereas United do not. I would put him in the top three in the world at the moment, and we need our players to be in the top three. He’s made the difference for them this season. There is a fine line between being a good side and a great one, and he has made that difference for Arsenal this season.
We mustn’t forget that Arsenal have been tremendous this season. And as difficult as it may be for some fans to admit, they do deserve credit for winning the title and remaining unbeaten. We just have to hope that next season it is our turn.
We’re still in with a shout of getting a trophy; if we don’t get that then you really do have to start asking questions.
When we won the Treble, we had our luck along the way, but we had luck because we earned it. We’ve not had good fortune this season, but there is a definite argument that we haven’t earned it.
We’ve got to find a couple of world-class players, certainly one. Like Ronaldinho, like we had in Cantona. They’re hard to find, but Sir Alex Ferguson has found them in the past and he needs to do it again.
Paul Scholes is a great midfielder. He can make the long passes, great passes and be there in the box at the right time. He’s a brilliant, brilliant player, but we need a magician as well. When the opposition find a way to stop Scholes or van Nistelrooy scoring, that player can come in and unlock defences, find a way through that no other player can.
We’ve got to find a couple of world-class players, certainly one. Like Ronaldinho, like we had in Cantona. They’re hard to find, but Sir Alex Ferguson has found them in the past and he needs to do it again.

Keane Denies Celtic Rumours
Roy Keane has denied rumours linking him with a move to Scottish champions Celtic.
The United skipper has regularly linked with a move to Parkhead, and a fresh batch of rumours filled the back pages of Tuesday´s tabloids.
But, speaking in an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, Keane said: " My stance is that I have two years on my contract at Manchester United and I have never been happier.
" In my eyes I am playing for the biggest club in the world, there is no doubt in my mind about that. Don’t get me wrong, I have great respect for the Milans, Madrids, the Arsenal’s and the Celtic’s – they’re all great clubs. But I’ve got two years on my contract and I couldn’t be happier.
" It’s unfortunate, but it is part of football that people are going to speculate. That’s part of being a footballer. I think sometimes the more you comment on it the more is made of it.
" If you say ‘no comment’ people think, ‘Oh, he’s going’. You can’t win. As I say, though, I’m very happy here."
UNITED TRACKING ´THE NEW ZIDANE´
Manchester United are one of a number of clubs investigating the possibility of signing Hatem Ben Arfa, a prodigy inevitably being dubbed ´The new Zinedine Zidane´.
The Lyon youngster has attracted attention from a host of top European sides with his stellar displays in an attacking midfield role for the French champions´ youth teams.
The 17-year-old trained with the Stade Gerland senior squad at the end of March and spoke of his delight at taking the step up in class.
" What pride," he told l´OL´s official website. " This is the goal of an athlete to be a professional one day.
" I always have a lot to learn. I continue to work to progress again and again.
" I am not a future Zidane. I am my own person, simply Hatem.
" I hope to be a good player, to do beautiful things in soccer. Zidane, he is a football legend, this is a level almost unobtainable."
French sources claim Ben Arfa, whose father is Tunisian, has finished his trainee contract with Lyon, and the club are determined to sign him to his first professional deal, although they are fully aware of the rival interest in the teenager.
14 clubs were left disappointed when Ben Arfa chose to join l´OL at 15, and the youngster was annoyed at the time with the way he was viewed by some of his suitors.
" There are clubs that want me for their own interest," he said. " That annoys me."
Ben Arfa is described as a different type of player to the likes of Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka. The precocious starlet is small in stature with sensational dribbling ability and a fine footballing brain.
Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to be well aware of Ben Arfa´s talents and is monitoring developments closely.
