JOAQUIN OPENS DOOR TO BLUES
Real Betis star Joaquin insists he would consider signing for Chelsea - but admits his preference would be to remain in Spain.
The Spanish international was responding to comments earlier in the day from his father, and agent, Aurelio Sanchez who had claimed his son would not sign for Chelsea because of London´s cold climate.
However, Joaquin - also a target for Manchester United - has distanced himself from the comments and insists that he would be prepared to move to Stamford Bridge if The Blues were to strike a deal with Betis.
" It seems they ( Chelsea) are interested and they are negotiating with the ( Betis) president ( Manuel Ruiz de Lopera)," declared the 22-year-old.
" I can´t tell you any more - only that I don´t dislike Chelsea.
" It seems that the Russian ( Roman Abramovich) doesn´t have any money problems and, if he wanted, could sign anyone he liked.
" Although here we also have someone who has a lot of money of their own," he said in reference to Ruiz de Lopera.
Real Madrid still remain the favourites to land Joaquin should he leave Seville in the summer, and the wideman conceded he would prefer to stay in Spain - but added that he was in no hurry to leave Los Verdiblancos.
" I would like to continue in Spain if I had to leave, but I don´t know what´s going to happen because every year the rumours happen and the reality is that I have not gone yet, and I don´t see things being any different this year.
" In a sporting sense, as far as titles go, we do have much luck at this club, but I am 22 years old and if Betis are thinking about building a great team then why shouldn´t I stay."
Joaquin also revealed his pain at being omitted from Spain´s squad to face Italy later in the month.
The youngster has set his heart on going to the European Championships in Portugal this summer after his impressive showing at the World Cup two years ago.
" For me it´s a real blow not being called up," he admitted.
" It´s very important for me to play at the European Championships after going to the World Cup.
" I just didn´t see it happening, but I am young and it would not be the end of the world."
AGENT SLAMS SOLSKJAER SPECULATION
The agent of Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dismissed media speculation that the Norwegian could be heading for Celtic during the summer.
Press reports had suggested that the SPL champions were considering a swoop for the Norwegian international as a replacement for departing Swede Henrik Larsson.
However, Jim Solbakken denied the speculation, claiming it was merely mischief-making on behalf of the media.
" That is just nonsense. Ole Gunnar is going nowhere, he is a Manchester United player and will always be so," said Solbakken.
" I have spoken with a lot of people, but there is nothing concrete. There´s no truth in it at all."
Meanwhile, Celtic manager Martin O´Neill has revealed that he has employed former Bhoys´ idol Lubo Moravcik to help in the search for Larsson´s replacement.
The Celtic chief wants the Slovakian to scour Eastern Europe and France for attacking talent reminiscent of himself during his pomp.
O´Neill is well aware he needs to invest in fresh blood, and feels Moravcik´s knowledge of the European game could be crucial to snaring a hidden gem.
" Lubo obviously knows the situation with eastern sides and is well aware of what´s going on in France having played there," stated the former Leicester supremo.
" I would be delighted if he could find someone as good as himself but with a ten-year difference.
" He is happy to do some work for us and I too would be happy to do exactly that.
" If there are players he recommends then it is entirely up to me to go and see them after that. The buck stops with me.
" I think they ( the Celtic board) have the same understanding that we need replacements for Henrik and Liam.
" With Shaun Maloney not due back until Christmas and John Kennedy away for at least a year we obviously need to replenish the squad.
" We are looking around to see if we can replace players and in Henrik´s case someone on a long-term basis."
FERGUSON TO OFFER RIO NEW UNITED DEAL
Manchester United will offer Rio Ferdinand a new contract - even though the centre back is serving an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he is keen for United´s record signing, who has been linked with big-spending Chelsea, to sign a new deal.
Ferdinand cost United £30 million when he signed from Leeds in 2002 and boss Ferguson wants the England international to commit his future to the Old Trafford until 2009.
" We´ve been discussing it with his agent ( Pini Zahavi)," Ferguson told The Guardian.
" He´s only 24 and he could realistically play for us at the highest level for another 12 to 14 years.
" I think his form has been magnificent. You don´t realise just how good a player he is until he´s not there. To me, he´s been terrific."

Trez edges closer to exit door
Reports in Italy claim that it is now certain that David Trezeguet will leave Juventus during the summer.
The French international striker has long been linked with a move from the Stadio delle Alpi after expressing unhappiness over his pay-packet with the Turin giants.
Juve seem prepared to let the prolific former Monaco star move on and Barcelona have been mooted as his most likely destination.
Indeed, the French media suggested that Trezeguet had concurred on a three-year deal with the Catalan giants last week, but a new suitor for his services has emerged.
Unsurprisingly the club in question is Roman Abramovich-backed Chelsea who are said to be ready to use Hernan Crespo as a makeweight in any deal for Trezeguet.
The Blues´ Premiership rivals Arsenal are also said to be monitoring the situation, though the player has made little secret of the fact that Camp Nou would be his preferred destination.

Rio set for new deal
Manchester United are ready to offer Rio Ferdinand a new long-term contract amid rumours of him moving to Chelsea.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed talks have started with the England defender and believes he will play at the top level for another 12 years.
" We have been discussing a new deal with Rio, although it is still at the early stages," said Ferguson.
" Rio is only 24 and a lot of centre-halves do not really mature until they are 27-30."
Ferdinand, banned from playing until 20 September after failing to attend a drugs test, has been sorely missed by United in his absence.
I can see Rio playing at the top level for another 12 years
Sir Alex Ferguson
" His form for us has been fantastic and you do not realise how good a player he is until he is not there," Ferguson added.
" Apart from his fitness, he has a great reading of the game and he is going to get better.
" The sort of player and person he is, he can play on for years and years.
" Frank McLintock was still playing for Arsenal when he was 36. So I can see Rio playing at the top level for another 12, 13 or 14 years."
Reports suggest Ferguson has identified Ferdinand as a successor to club captain Roy Keane, who still has two years left on his United contract.
Ferdinand, who signed a five-year deal when he arrived at Old Trafford in July 2002 for £29.3m, was previously skipper at West Ham and Leeds.
Parait que Rijkaard aime beaucoup Owen et le veut, ce qui pourrait expliquer que Trezeguet n´aille pas au Barça...

Rio got 12 more years
Alex Ferguson believes Rio Ferdinand will be at Manchester United for another 12 years. Far from wanting to sell him as some have suggested, the United boss believes the England centre-back can be an Old Trafford fixture until he is 36. Fergie confirmed they had begun talking about extending Ferdinand contract. And now he is backing him to come back from his drugs ban and be better than ever. Ferguson said: We have been discussing a new deal with Rio, although it is still at the very early stages at the moment. Rio is only 24 and a lot of centre-halves do not really mature until they are 29 or 30. Frank McLintock was still playing for Arsenal when he was 36.
