"THAT’S MORE LIKE IT "

Story by Editor 10 April 2003

Veron sounds the charge

Juan Veron has said he will be fit in time to face Real:

"I´m in Rome to have treatment because I´m determined to be
ready for when Real arrive. Real were very good on the night
but nobody should be fooled into thinking we are beaten.”

Speaking in the Sun, Veron said that the contest is far from
over:

"Real Madrid might think it is over but it´s not. I promise
our fans that we´ll still be in the final. The contest is
not finished because every man in our squad knows the final
is fixed at Old Trafford and we must be there at any cost.

"There is no doubt that we can win 2-0 and put Real Madrid
out of the tournament even though they are the European
champions and we will be without suspended Paul Scholes and
Gary Neville."

"NEWSPAPERS TURN ON KEANE "

Story by Editor 10 April 2003

( Telegraph, Guardian and The Sun)

Henry Winter in the Telegraph:

´Roy Keane, Manchester United´s first line of defiance,
yesterday described the task of staying in this season´s
Champions League as "the biggest challenge this team will
ever face". Judging by his own anonymity in Tuesday´s 3-1
quarter-final first-leg defeat at Real Madrid, Keane himself
faces the biggest challenge of his professional life.

´The Irishman´s career has been rescued by the hands of
surgeons before but the sands of time, now fully exposing
the ravages of mobility-restricting injuries to hip and
knee, are not sparing him. A great player is in decline. It
is both sad and true, like discovering rust accruing on a
beloved steel monument.

´Sir Alex Ferguson´s loyalty to Keane is not in question but
an ambitious manager who has shown no mercy when his teams
need rebuilding knows that John O´Shea, a youngster who has
excelled across the back four, has the versatility to
function in the engine-room. O´Shea´s obvious class in terms
of touch, confidence and decent speed demands he starts
soon.

´The time to worry about Keane is now. Ferguson could field
him at centre-half but Keane is a proud, thoughtful man and
no one should rule out a sudden retirement announcement a la
Eric Cantona.

´Tuesday night was an education but the lesson of United has
always been that they will be back. With or without Keane
remains to be seen.´

Matt Dickinson in the Times:

´Perhaps the most alarming feature for United was Roy Keane’s
failure to ride into town as Ferguson’s enforcer. Keane
looked like a great heavyweight who had gone a fight too
far.

´He did not even sound convincing when he tried to revive the
spirit of Turin in 1999 when, in the semi-final against
Juventus, the United captain pushed Zinedine Zidane to the
margins of the game with an heroic performance. On Tuesday,
Keane never got close to the world’s most dextrous
footballer. “Juventus were a great side when we beat them
but Real are better,” Keane said with a tinge of
resignation.

´The more Keane is criticised, the more Ferguson will
publicly defend his captain, but he will know that the
Irishman’s intimidatory powers are now limited to
frightening only the lesser sides in England and Europe.
Arsenal will know that Patrick Vieira can take advantage of
Keane’s lack of mobility after hip surgery when they meet in
a potential Premiership classic at Highbury on Wednesday.
The radical move would be to switch Keane to central
defence, where the partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Wes
Brown continues to look less than the sum of its parts.
Keane’s nastiness might rub off on two natural strollers.´

Steven Howard in the Sun:

´Alex Ferguson has reached the moment in his Manchester
United career he always dreaded. It´s the awful realisation
that Roy Keane can no longer carry the most successful side
in the country.

´Since arriving from Nottingham Forest in 1993-94 - even more
so since the retirement of Eric Cantona - Keane has been the
heart and soul of Old Trafford. But the stunning events at
the Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday confirm the Irishman is no
longer the force he once was.

´Keane claims that even the magnificent ensemble put together
in Madrid by Vicente Del Bosque is human.

´Sadly, so is the man who once bestrode the footballing world
like a colossus.´

FA Youth Cup Semi Final
United 2
( Johnson 51, Richardson 62)
Charlton 0
United win 3-1 on aggregate

With the scores level at 1-1 going into this semi final second leg at Old Trafford, United knew the objective if they were to reach their twelfth final in the competition - and first since 1995.

United carried out the task to the letter here with a convincing 2-0 win over Charlton. The Reds are going for their eighth FA Youth Cup win, and now only Middlesbrough - the other finalists - stand in their way of reaching that impressive feat.

Brian McClair´s young charges lined up in all blue for this semi final tie, while Charlton wore their away outfit of white shirts socks with red shorts.

United started the match brightly, taking just six minutes to register their first clear-cut opportunity. Chris Eagles was felled 25 yards from goal after a surging run towards the edge of the area. David Jones struck the resulting free kick just wide of the left upright.

Meanwhile Mads Timm was in sparkling first half form. The Danish youngster produced some dazzling moments of skill to delight the 4,427-strong Old Trafford crowd gathered in the South Stand.

On the quarter hour mark, Timm and the impressive Eagles interchanged passes on the right wing to create an opening that ended with Timm shooting low at goal, only for Jack Delo in the Charlton goal to palm away his effort.

Five minutes later Mads brought another save out of Delo, again firing in a dangerous low shot. Once again, moments later, the Danish forward took on the Charlton back four, and must have wondered what he had to do to get his name on the scoresheet after Delo pulled off another fingertip stop.

Charlton weren´t without chances of their own, however. Lloyd Sam was denied twice at the other end by some fine goalkeeping from United stopper Luke Steele.

After the break United were in no mood to let this tie slip from their grasp. Jones found Eddie Johnson free in the box six minutes after the restart, and although it looked as if his first touch had eluded him, he regained his composure and slotted the ball home to hand United the lead.

The goal seemed to settle United. Mads Timm even had time to do a few keepy-ups on the halfway line, before he was chopped down.

Kieran Richardson then spurned a chance to extend United´s lead. Having danced past a couple of Charlton defenders the goal opened up in front of him 20 yards out, but his shot found a few empty Stretford End seats rather than the back of the net.

Karl Beckford rattled United´s bar on the hour to give the Reds a scare. However, almost immediately United got their second and put the tie out of Chalrton´s reach.

Kieran Richardson rounded the keeper to slot home the ball for United´s second. In his celebration he revealed a t-shirt bearing the words "that´s for u Dad".

But United weren´t about to rest on their laurels - David Jones pinpointed a pass towards the lively Mads Timm. The Danish attacker clipped his shot over the stranded Delo to leave the crowd on their feet, willing the ball over the line. Unfortunately for Mads - he deserved a goal for his sheer tenacity - the ball drifted agonisingly past the wrong side of the post.

Mads came off to a warm reception with a little over ten minutes remaining - he earned the applause for what was an impressive display. Sylvan Blake, who scored the third in United´s 3-1 win over Tranmere in the previous round replaced him.

Blake immediately got in on the action, going close twice near the death, but he couldn´t quite find the finishing touch to add to United´s well-earned scoreline.

United will play Middlesbrough in the first leg of the final at the Riverside on Tuesday 15 April with return leg at Old Trafford on Friday 25 April. Both games kick off at 8.05pm.

United: Steele; Lawrence, Bardsley, McShane, Sims; Eagles, Jones, Richardson, Collett; Timm ( Blake 76), Johnson. Subs not used: Howard, Heaton, Calliste, Byrne.

Charlton: Delo, Thanda, Gross, Fuller, Sankofa, Jackson, Sam, Ndombe, Beckford, Varney, Long. Subs not used: Evans, Elliot, Frempong, Weston, Ashton

=>encore Seba ; -)

"Seba gives Reds hope"

Juan Veron says that he´s determined to be fit for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid a week on Wednesday.

Seba has been out in Rome getting treatment on a knee injury, but has vowed to be back in the action for the match that United have to win by at least two clear goals.

"I´m in Rome to have treatment because I´m determined to be ready for when Real arrive," he told The Sun on Thursday.

Paul Scholes will miss the match through suspension, so it is doubly important that the Argentine midfielder is available to Sir Alex. United trail Real 3-1 at half-time in the tie, but Seba is confident that the Reds will prevail.

"Real Madrid might think it is over but it´s not. I promise our fans that we´ll still be in the final. The contest is not finished because every man in our squad knows the final is fixed at Old Trafford and we must be there at any cost," he said.

"There is no doubt that we can win 2-0 and put Real Madrid out of the tournament even though they are the European champions and we will be without suspended Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

"Real were very good on the night but nobody should be fooled into thinking we are beaten.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy´s goal was vital for us. If he hadn´t scored and it had finished 3-0 to Madrid, then we would have faced a very tough job."

=>"Inside United: Ruud´s record "

Despite a disappointing defeat in the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, Ruud van Nistelrooy could at least console himself with the fact that he had achieved yet another record-breaking feat.

The Dutchman’s crucial second half strike not only ensured that United remain in with a chance of progressing into the semi finals, but it also secured his name in the annals of history.

The Dutch striker became the first player in Champions League history to break the 10-goal barrier in a single season with his header against Real Madrid. His tally in this competition now stands at an incredible 21 goals in 22 games ( excluding qualifiers).

Van Nistelrooy had already shown his class by reaching the 10-goal mark for the second successive season – he’s the only player to manage that in the competition’s history – but now he has his sights set on the overall European Cup record, currently held by Brazilian Jose Altafini.

The goalscoring record was first created by Milos Milutinovic, who scored eight times for Partizan Belgrade in the opening competition in 1955-56. The following season, Dennis Viollet of Manchester United set a new mark of nine and Alfredo di Stefano of the great Real Madrid team became the first to reach double figures in a single campaign in 1957-58.

The record was broken again in 1959-60 by di Stefano’s team-mate Ferenc Puskas, before Altafini set a tally of 14 as AC Milan took the European Cup to Italy for the first time in 1963.

Should Ruud manage to score four more and break the all time scoring record in the European Cup this season, then it is a fairly safe bet that the famous trophy will be staying in Manchester long after the final on May 28th.

=>Pour finir........

=>"Veron: I´ll save United"
Juan Veron has promised Manchester United fans: I´ll be back to knock out Real Madrid. And the crocked midfielder insists Alex Ferguson´s men can then go on to reach the European Cup final at Old Trafford. Argentine playmaker Veron, 28, missed United´s 3-1 quarter-final, first leg mauling in Madrid on Tuesday with a knee injury. But he is receiving specialist treatment in Italy in a bid to be fit for the return encounter on April 23. Veron blasted last night: "Real Madrid might think it is over but it´s not. I promise our fans that we´ll still be in the final. The contest is not finished because every man in our squad knows the final is fixed at Old Trafford and we must be there at any cost."
Neil Custis, The Sun

"Anyone seeno Keano?"

Alex Ferguson has reached the moment in his Manchester United career he always dreaded. It´s the awful realisation that Roy Keane can no longer carry the most successful side in the country. Equally as depressing, there seems to be no one at the club with the same requirements to replace him. Since arriving from Nottingham Forest in 1993-94 - even more so since the retirement of Eric Cantona - Keane has been the heart and soul of Old Trafford. But the stunning events at the Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday confirm the Irishman is no longer the force he once was. The eyes don´t deceive - and nor did the sound of the jungle-drums on the eve of United´s comprehensive 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid. Stars like Zinedine Zidane and Raul made respectful noises about Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ryan Giggs. But there was no mention of a player whose unrivalled competitiveness and rampaging runs had made him one of Europe´s outstanding midfielders.
Steven Howard, The Sun

"Becks blows Real deal"

David Beckham has blown any hope he had of joining Real Madrid´s dream team. Madrid president Florentino Perez was interested in making the Manchester United midfielder his next star signing in the summer. But Becks´ lacklustre performance in the Bernabeu on Tuesday led to the England skipper taking a pasting from the Spanish Press. Now Perez has gone off the idea of signing Beckham and will stick with Luis Figo - who had his name chanted around the famous stadium. Spanish paper Marca ran the headline "Figo and Raul won the referendum over Becks" after Real´s 3-1 win. El Mundo declared: "The Spice Boy was Figo." Beckham is alleged to have told the Spanish media: "It was a disaster, we went out showing Real Madrid far too much respect - as if we were intimidated by them, which we are not.
Neil Custis, The Sun

"You made us look like Lemons"

Manchester United´s midfield stars have until the end of the season to save their careers at Old Trafford. Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt were so comprehensively outplayed in the 3-1 Champions League defeat by Real Madrid that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering making changes in the summer. Defender Gary Neville admitted they were so embarrassed by the European champions´ fantasy football it was like "playing against the Harlem Globetrotters", the legendary American basketball team led by Meadowlark Lemon. People will say we gave them too much respect and were nervous, but sometimes you just have to admire a team like Real Madrid," said Neville.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

"Lame five v fame five"

It was supposed to be the night when Manchester United proved their pedigree and their right to be in Europe´s elite. But by the time they walked off the Bernabeu pitch, Sir Alex Ferguson´s side knew it was only spirit and desire that had kept their Champions League aspirations alive. In the battle of the "Famous Fives" there was only one winner, as the 3-1 scoreline and the faces of the players told all too clearly. Although Ronaldo did not live up to his own standards, he was the exception. Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Raul and Roberto Carlos were outstanding. By contrast, only one of United´s key quintet, Ruud van Nistelrooy, looked like a player at home on the biggest stage. Alongside him, David Beckham seemed cowed by the occasion, Ryan Giggs was anonymous for long periods, Paul Scholes struggled to make an impression and Roy Keane did not make one at all.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

"Figo´s the Spice Boy"

The Spanish press yesterday hailed Real Madrid´s Champions´ League victory over Manchester United - and gave David Beckham zero points. The daily sports newspaper Marca headlined "Figo and Raul won the referendum over Becks" and said: "The Bernabeu delivered its sentence - acclaim for Figo and a pass on Beckham." The newspaper said that if club president Florentino Perez had any doubt about what the fans thought of exchanging the Portuguese star for the "Spice Boy", they clearly showed what they thought with their roars of "Figo! Figo!"
Simon Cass, Daily Mirror

"Kid Kieran pulls it off"

Kieran Richardson sent Manchester United into the Youth Cup final - then emulated Diego Forlan by failing to get his shirt back on after his celebrations. The young Londoner, watched by good friend Rio Ferdinand, netted to seal a 2-0 home win over Charlton - 3-1 on aggregate. Eddie Johnson had opened the scoring. Brian McClair´s side now face Middlesbrough.
Sports staff, Daily Mirror

"Shock ´n awe"

Manchester United stars last night admitted they were awestruck by mighty Real Madrid. Gary Neville - who will miss the second leg on April 23 after picking up his second yellow card in the Champions League -hailed Real as the untouchables of European football. And England skipper David Beckham confessed: "We showed them too much respect."
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

"How do we get out of a Real mess?"

Sir Alex Ferguson started formulating his plan to overcome Real Madrid on the plane back from the Spanish capital. As the Manchester United team waited for take-off, Fergie could be found huddled in a row of seats with his Portuguese coach Carlos Quieroz. They were deep in discussion about Real´s devastating performance in their 3-1 defeat, and Fergie had a piece of papers and pen in his hand. The fact the page was blank probably highlights best the awesome task they face in less than two weeks at Old Trafford.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

"Only hope is rollickin´ Roy"

Roy Keane, as always, talked a good game after Manchester United had given a footballing lesson by Real Madrid. The captain was sensible, realistic and, yes, confident. "We have nothing to lose, let´s go for it, why not," he said. The question is whether Keane can play a good game any more at this level. The harsh reality for United and Keane is that the Irishman is not the player he was. He knows it and it´s beginning to show in matches against the best.
Brian Woolnough, Daily Star

"It´s over and out time for Keane"

Roy Keane cut a typically defiant figure in the bowels of the Bernabeu as he reflected on Real Madrid´s imperious 3-1 Champions League win over Manchester United. Keane belligerently suggested United could come back and reach the semi-final when the teams reconvene for the second leg at Old Trafford in a fortnight. The comfort blanket he clung to was how United responded four years ago when they were two goals down after five minutes in Turin but fought back to beat Juventus 3-2 and reach the final, where their indomitable spirit saw them come from behind again to beat Bayern Munich and lift the trophy.
Rob Shepherd, Daily Express

"Feeling the strain"

David Beckham could miss out on Manchester United´s vital Premiership clash at Newcastle on Saturday. The England captain is worried about a hamstring tweak that restricted his movement and contributed to a below-par display against Real Madrid on Tuesday night. Beckham reported for treatment at United´s training ground yesterday and Sir Alex Ferguson may decide not to risk him at St James´ Park for fear of putting him out of Wednesday´s showdown with title rivals Arsenal and the return with Real.
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

"Beckham fear"

David Beckham is a serious doubt for Manchester United´s potentially decisive Premiership clash with Newcastle on Saturday. The England captain limped home from United´s 3-1 defeat at Real Madrid in the early hours yesterday after suffering a hamstring problem.

=> "Ruud knows Newcastle "

Ruud van Nistelrooy is confident of Reds success against Newcastle on Saturday because he knows what to expect from the Magpies and Sir Bobby Robson.

The Reds striker, who broke the Champions League record for the number of goals scored in a season on Tuesday evening, is thriving on the current pressure in the Premiership and isn´t expecting anything out of the ordinary at St James´ Park.

"It´s the most important part of the season, with some massive games," Ruud told ManUtd.com on Thursday.

"But everyone´s ready for them. There will be no surprises, we know exactly what we need to do, we know the teams and all the players so that makes it good.

"What´s pressure? The important thing is playing well and trying to win games. That´s what we´ve been trying to do all season, and now isn´t any different."

Ruud played under Sir Bobby - then plain Bobby - at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven for a season before moving to Manchester, and he´s looking forward to meeting up with his former mentor once again.

"He´s a great manager," praised Ruud.

"The years that he´s been with Newcastle now and the clubs that he had previously, it´s amazing what he´s achieved. It was a privilege to work with him for that one year at PSV Eindhoven."

And the hitman says that Robson has put together an impressive team in the North East.

"Everyone knows that Bellamy and Shearer are a great duo upfront.

"Then there´s Dyer and Jenas who come in from midfield to make great runs into our box.

"Robert´s on the left - he´s a good striker of the ball and a good crosser. That makes them a complete team," he concluded.
