"Veron promises Man Utd fightback" ( BBC)
Veron has a promise for United fans
Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has vowed to return for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid.
Veron is out with a knee injury and missed United´s 3-1 mauling in the Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday.
But the Argentine star will be ready to return for the second leg at Old Trafford and insists United are not out of the competition yet.
"Real Madrid might think it is over but it´s not. I promise our fans that we´ll still be in the final," Veron vowed.
"The contest is not finished because every man in our squad knows the final is fixed at Old Trafford and we must be there at any cost," he added.
Veron is adamant United can secure a 2-0 victory that would send them through on the away goal rule following Ruud van Nistelrooy´s strike in the Bernabeu.
"There is no doubt that we can win 2-0 and put Real Madrid out of the tournament even though they are the European champions and we will be without suspended Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.
Match report: Real Madrid 3-1 Man Utd
"Real were very good on the night but nobody should be fooled into thinking we are beaten.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy´s goal was vital for us. If he hadn´t scored and it had finished 3-0 to Madrid, then we would have faced a very tough job."
Veron is currently undergoing treatment in Rome in a desperate bid to be fit for the second leg.
Newcastle´s Hugo Viana has made a surprise return to training after injuring his shoulder, and could be in the squad for Saturday´s visit of Manchester United. ( The Times)

Quick goal is the key in the second leg
"We are facing a very difficult second leg and our only ray
of hope is the away goal we scored. If we were to score
first it could make it an interesting evening. That is the
challenge facing us now."

We all have a part to play in two weeks time
Fergie knows that an intimidating atmosphere will help if we
are to progress to the semi finals:
“If we can score at home, Old Trafford will come alight. The
fans have a big part to play that night and I am sure they
will do their bit,
"We know it will be tough, but asking Manchester United to
score two goals at home is not asking the impossible".

They will now face Middlesbrough, who beat Manchester City
in the other semi, in the final.

Phillipe Albert looks forward to Saturday’s game
The former Newcastle defender now works on a fruit stall and
will be paraded on the pitch pre-match this weekend. He
still watches English football and believes that Newcastle
will have their work cut out. He is quoted on the ic
Newcastle website as saying:
"We had a lot of big games under Kevin Keegan and a lot of
big days. But that win over Manchester United has to be the
best,
"And while my goal was not the best I´ve scored, it´s the
one that is remembered the most by Newcastle fans after I
chipped the ball over Peter Schmeichel.
"Now football is finished for me but I still see a lot of
both Newcastle United and Manchester United on TV over here.
"What I do know is that Newcastle have a very good team and
that Bobby Robson has done a fantastic job since he took
over.
"But they will come up against one of the best club teams in
the world on Saturday in Manchester United.
"Only a world-class team can have come back against Real
Madrid after being three goals down like they did last night
and I believe they are still in the frame in the second leg
at Old Trafford."

"GARY NEVILLE KNOWS WE CAN DO IT "
Story by Editor 10 April 2003
Real aren’t through yet
In his column with the Times, Neville said:
“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and praise the
opposition and there were times in the first half on Tuesday
night when Real Madrid were awesome. At 2-0 up, they were
knocking the ball around like the Harlem Globetrotters.
“People will be saying they are the best team in the world,
if not the best ever, but it is our job to look for
weaknesses and we found chinks in their armour in the second
half. It is up to us to prove that great players are also
human beings who can wobble under pressure. I don’t care how
good they are, they are going to have big doubts if they are
going in 1-0 down at half-time in the second leg with almost
70,000 Reds on their backs.
“At 2-0 up, they started playing to the crowd. They are top
of the Spanish league, champions of Europe and feel
unbeatable. They have reason to feel that way, but someone
has to knock them off the mountain some time.
“With Ryan Giggs farther forward in the second half and a
more attack-minded game, I think we all saw how they can be
beaten. At 3-0 down, it was a question of us going for it
and we deserved the away goal for never giving in. We saw
them wilt a little when we scored. They lost their fluency
for 15 or 20 minutes. I would have been truly disheartened
if we hadn’t laid a finger on them but we gave them
something to think about. They know the job is not done.
“People are talking about how good they are but we have
played some top teams off the park in the past few years
and, for all the talk of their big players, we have a true
world-class striker in Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“Apart from his goal, you could tell that they hated playing
against him. Ruud was the big plus of the evening and, if
you look at his record, he is on his way to becoming the
greatest goalscorer United have had.
“An opening goal from Ruud or anyone else and there will be
some fight on at Old Trafford in a fortnight. I am gutted
that I won’t be on the pitch. Missing a European Cup quarter-
final is bad enough, but what really hurts is not having the
chance to help the rest of the team to put things right.”
