THE TIMES
Sir Alex Ferguson could be seen whispering " unlucky" as he shook hands with Adams at the final whistle, but Leicester’s principal misfortune was to be on the receiving end of one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s most effective performances since joining United for £12.24 million last August. Well contained in the first half, the 19-year-old winger grew in influence after the interval and, having set up Neville’s goal, he proceeded to torment a Leicester defence that was otherwise largely untroubled by a United team who badly missed Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
United’s emphasis was clearly on a conservation of energy, as David Bellion and Diego Forlán, two of the four players who were recalled to the starting line-up, have little or no hope of breaking into Ferguson’s plans for the Cup Final against Millwall. If Ronaldo made the most of his opportunity, the same could not be said of Forlán, who was substituted, having failed even to get into the positions from which he habitually misses. To the visible annoyance of Ferguson, the Uruguay forward headed straight for the dressing-room rather than watch the remainder of the match from the bench.

He´s Ron in a million
Cristiano Ronaldo was the toast of Old Trafford after Manchester United edged closer to second-placed Chelsea. Goal hero Gary Neville happily gave Ronaldo the man of the match champagne. Then Neville and manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the Portuguese teenager for his tremendous impact in his first season in the Premiership. Ferguson said: " I think in two years´ time he will be an absolutely outstanding player. Hopefully, one of the best Manchester United have had." Neville said: " Cristiano is very confident. He always wants the ball. He dribbles at players and makes it very difficult for them. He has imposed himself more and more."

Barcelona have denied rumours that United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is a target for the Catalan club as part of a swap deal involving Carles Puyol.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is quoted as saying: " We are not in the market for negotiations as the player is very happy at Manchester and Manchester want to keep him."
Van Nistelrooy told this website that there is absolutely no truth in speculation suggesting he was headed for the Nou Camp.
Alluding to the fact that he has just signed a new five-year deal in January, Ruud told ManUtd.com this week: " I am happy at Manchester United. I recently signed a new contract and I wouldn’t have committed my future to the club if I wasn’t.
" I am enjoying my football, the fans are second to none, and any reports of me leaving are just wild rumours."
United chief executive David Gill followed up van Nistelrooy´s comments with a straight-to-the-point " Ruud is not for sale".
Right-back Puyol has been linked to United in the past, and it appears the tabloids have put two and two together and certainly not come up with four - both sides now having flatly denied the reports.
" No, this is not true," Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell told BBC Sport after another bout of speculation. " There is no foundation in this story at all.
" Carles Puyol will absolutely be staying at Barcelona. He is a key player and not going to be sold."
Barcelona are known to be seeking a striker, but the answer to their search certainly won´t be found at Old Trafford.

Paul Scholes will sit before an FA disciplinary panel on Monday to face charges of violent conduct.
Scholes´ push on Middlesbrough midfielder Doriva, an incident that took place over two months ago on 11 February, would see him handed a three-match ban if found guilty.
The United midfielder would be likely to miss the games against Charlton, Liverpool and Blackburn, disrupting his preparations for the FA Cup final on 22 May.
However, if Scholes chooses to use a 14-day period of appeal, he would risk missing the cup final.
Ferguson said of the incident at the time: " The referee was only five or six yards away. He said he didn´t see it. It was something and nothing really."
Scholes asked for a personal hearing into the incident, which wasn´t picked up by match referee Paul Durkin.
