AMSTERDAM, March 1 ( Reuters) - PSV Eindhoven´s Arjen Robben has agreed a five-year contract with English premier league Chelsea, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Monday.

ANP said the Dutch international would join Chelsea at the end of the season for 20 million euros ( $24.96 million).

Chelsea said on their official website that they were in talks with Robben.

" Chelsea can confirm that we are in negotiations with PSV Eindhoven for the purchase of their 20-year-old international striker Arjen Robben, and that he is undergoing a medical with a view to signing," the west London club said.

PSV spokesman Pedro Salazar Hewitt told Reuters that technical director Frank Arnesen, who handles transfers for the Dutch champions, and the club´s legal adviser Peter Fossen were in London with Robben.

English champions Manchester United failed to reach an agreement with PSV over the transfer of the winger last month.

Robben joined PSV from Groningen in 2002. He has three caps and scored the winner for the Netherlands in a friendly international against the United States last month.

PSV said on Sunday they were close to striking a cooperation deal with Chelsea which would resemble the arrangement Manchester United signed with Belgian club Antwerp in 1998.

" We are in talks with Chelsea about cooperation," a PSV spokesman said. " That cooperation exists because we are colleagues who can learn something from each other."

ANP also reported that PSV want to see the medical records of Brazilian defender Alex, who had a medical at the club on Sunday.

They want to assess the condition of the Santos player´s knee following surgery. Alex has played 18 matches since the operation without any problems, ANP said.

PSV had hoped to finalise a five-year-contract with Alex early next week.

Ruud van Nistelrooy admits he has lost sharpness
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims he rested Ruud van Nistelrooy at Fulham because he feared he was showing signs of burn-out.
He was criticised for only using leading scorer Van Nistelrooy as a substitute in the 1-1 draw.

Ferguson explained: " Ruud didn´t feel sharp after the game against Porto. I decided on a bit of freshness up front.

" I´ve said before that Ruud´s been carrying the burden for a long time and it´s time we started to look at that."

Ferguson said: " One of the reasons I signed Louis Saha was to ease the pressure on Ruud."

Van Nistelrooy has started 25 out of United´s 27 Premiership games this season and six out of seven Champions League games, scoring 24 goals.

He will return for Saturday´s FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham at Old Trafford, when Saha will be cup-tied against his former club.

Saha is also being nursed by Ferguson, who said: " We are having to treat Louis quite tenderly because he came to us with a calf injury and it has moved down to his heel now.

" We will have to be careful about that."

Danish side Brondby have played down reports the Manchester United are closing in on a swoop for Thomas Kahlenberg - but do admit that he has been watched by the Premiership champions.
The 20-year-old midfielder is one of Denmark´s rising young stars and has been attracting attention from around Europe.

Brondby say that Manchester United, among others, have been to watch the youngster in action - but as yet nobody has taken their interest any further.

The Danes are in Spain preparing for their Uefa Cup tie with Barcelona and general secretary Emil Bakkendorff told skysports.com about Kahlenberg´s situation.

" There are several sides that have been watching him, United among them," Bakkendorff told skysports.com.

" They have been here but they come to our stadium quite a lot and they don´t always say which player they are looking at.

" They have not made any contact with us about him."

The Danish international is tipped for big things and could enhance his reputation further with a good display at Camp Nou on Wednesday night as Brondby look to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.

Ternana insist they have no plans to sell highly-rated Chilean youngster Luis Jimenez.
The 19-year-old has attracted the interest of a host of clubs including Manchester United, Juventus and Internazionale after an impressive season with Ternana.

Jimenez´s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, but Ternana are keen to keep hold of him.

Ternana sporting manager Stefano Capozucca revealed that Manchester United and others have watched the player and are interested in signing him

" It´s true Jimenez is eyed by a lot of teams. He´s a young player who is making a really good championship," Capozucca told skysports.com.

" Many teams are eyeing him, but at the moment we haven´t any intention to talk about his future. We will see at the end of season.

" Atletico Madrid? Manchester United? Juventus? Inter? Yes, it´s true. These are all teams that arrived here to see him playing.

" But I want to say that at the moment the guy is still ours, because we want to see what will happen at the end of season."

Capozucca rejected reports that they had agreed with Juventus for Jimenez, but admitted they would probably sell the midfielder should they fail to win promotion to Serie A.

" In these days I´ve read also that we would have sold him to Juve, it´s absolutely false

" We will see at the end of season. If we will stay in Serie B we will sell him, otherwise, if as we are hoping, Ternana will go to Serie A, we will surely keep him."

Ferguson: Timm backing

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Mads Timm can go all the way at Manchester United, according to the young Dane.
While some Old Trafford observers have questioned whether the tall Scandinavian has made sufficient progress over the past year or so, clearly the attacking midfielder has the support of the man who matters most in Ferguson.

The Scot has handed the 19-year-old a fresh deal with the Premiership champions and there is a great incentive for Timm to push on towards regular reserve team football and a place in the senior squad at the earliest opportunity.

" I have extended my contract with United," he confirmed to Fyens Stiftstidende.

" Mr Ferguson has told me that he believes I can go all the way."

Ferguson is faced with difficult choices each season as to which of his youngsters to retain, but Timm is obviously one of the players being groomed for a future at United.

According to newspaper reports, Sir Alex Ferguson is keeping tabs on another Dutch wonderkid- Daniel de Ridder, a young bright talent that has risen from the well known Ajax Youth Academy.
De Riddler, 19, is in the similar mold to Ryan Giggs but isn´t the only Dutchman linked with a move to Old Trafford. PSV Eindhoven starlet Arjen Robben has also been linked.

The left-sided midfielder´s contract at Ajax expires in the summer and has been watched by top clubs in Europe such as Juventus and Barcelona.
